Is your AI-generated answer actually an advertisement? Google is turning chatbots into ad real estate

Time of India05-05-2025
What once felt like a private and intelligent digital dialogue may soon echo with the clinks of commerce. According to a report from
Bloomberg
, in a quietly unfolding move, Google has started placing ads inside conversations with third-party AI chatbots, transforming once ad-free exchanges into subtle marketing zones. The initiative, part of Google's
AdSense for Search
programme, is now being expanded after initial testing with AI startups like iAsk and Liner earlier this year.

These aren't the flashy banner ads of yesteryear, nor are they the sponsored snippets seen on traditional Google searches. Instead, the ads blend directly into the flow of AI conversations—strategically designed to appear helpful, even conversational. But make no mistake, they are still ads.

From Questions to Commerce: The Changing Face of AI Chat
This shift reflects a pressing need at Google's end. As more users opt for generative AI platforms like ChatGPT, Claude, or Perplexity to answer their questions, Google's once unshakable dominance in search advertising has started to waver. The classic search engine, long the goldmine of targeted ads, is no longer the only place people seek information. So, Google is following the users—right into their AI-powered chats.

A Google spokesperson confirmed the development to
Bloomberg
, noting that AdSense for Search is now being made available to websites with conversational AI experiences. Translation: your chatbot's next answer might come with a side of subtle sales pitch.
A Slippery Slope for Digital Dialogue
At its core, this marks a deeper shift—one that could change the very nature of how we interact with AI. If ads begin appearing mid-conversation, will users trust their AI assistant the same way? Will advice, suggestions, or product mentions be genuinely helpful—or commercially motivated?

What's unfolding is not merely a technical update but a philosophical reckoning. Google's move may well set a precedent for other tech giants. As advertising infiltrates generative AI experiences, the blurred line between unbiased help and targeted influence is set to get even murkier.
The next time your chatbot offers a product recommendation, you might have to wonder: was that insight… or an ad?

Vijayawada: Chief minister Chandrababu Naidu directed officials to take swift action to restore and revitalize the AP Fiber Net project. He charged that the previous government had completely derailed the AP Fiber Net project, a visionary initiative launched between 2014 and 2019. Reviewing the progress of AP Fibernet activities here on Monday, the chief minister asked the officials to assess the challenges, financial constraints, necessary corrective steps, and new policy directions. He said that the system, designed to benefit the public, students, and government departments, was exploited for political purposes by the previous govt. He pointed out that while there were 8.70 lakh connections before 2019, was dropped to 4.50 lakh during the YSRCP regime. "We managed the organization effectively with just 130 employees and provided over 8 lakh connections. But the YSRCP government created unauthorized posts to accommodate its party workers, expanding the workforce from 130 to 1,350 and misusing public funds. This was a new form of corruption where party affiliates were placed in government roles and used for political work. The fiber network was no exception. He, however, said that steps must be taken to rectify past mistakes and ensure a better future. He instructed that the current 4,53,525 connections be increased to at least 8–10 lakh. The chief minister approved the integration of AP Fiber Net with the BharatNet (Amended BharatNet Programme – ABP). Under this scheme, the Centre will allocate Rs. 1,900 crore to AP Fiber Net from 2025 to 2035. He also approved the transition of fiber networks in 1692 gram panchayats across Chittoor and Visakhapatnam districts from linear to ring architecture. Additionally, 480 new gram panchayats will be connected using the ring model. The Centre will provide Rs. 430 crore for this phase. Silver outshines gold, hits 1.12L/kg

Ahmedabad: Silver outpaced gold in returns this year, with prices in Ahmedabad climbing 30% since Jan 1 to touch a record Rs 1.125 lakh per kilogram on Monday. In comparison, gold gained 28% during the same period, rising from Rs 79,200 for 10g at the start of the year to reach the current Rs 1.015 lakh. The latest spike saw silver prices rise by Rs 2,500 in a single session to go up from Saturday's Rs 1.10 lakh. The white metal's stronger performance is backed by surging industrial demand and tight global supplies. "Silver's outperformance is largely due to increased consumption in sectors like solar energy and electronics. Last week, US President Donald Trump imposed a 50% tariff on copper imports, which will take effect on Aug 1. Since silver and copper are both widely used in industrial applications, especially in electronics and clean energy sectors, if copper becomes more expensive due to tariffs, manufacturers are likely to look for cheaper alternatives like silver," said Haresh Acharya, director of Indian Bullion and Jewellers Association (IBJA). Nearly 60% of silver's global demand now comes from industrial applications, particularly green technologies. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like This Could Be the Best Time to Trade Gold in 5 Years IC Markets Learn More Undo "With India's bullish push for green energy through solarisation, silver consumption has sizeably increased in the country. With international prices hovering around $39 an ounce, silver is clearly emerging as a safe-haven investment and an essential input for industry," Acharya added. The increasing price of the yellow metal has impacted retail demand for gold. According to jewellers, both gold and silver are gradually getting out of reach of common customers. "A combination of industrial use and investment demand has fuelled the sharp rise, with silver ETFs attracting increasing investor interest as the metal gains attention for its growth potential. Gold and silver are clearly out of reach of customers. Exchange transactions have gone up substantially to 80% over the past six months, since when gold and silver prices increased. People come with old jewellery for repairing it or exchanging it for new. Jewellery trade is clearly muted," said Manoj Soni, member of the Jewellers' Association Ahmedabad (JAA).
