
How AI is quietly reshaping Bengaluru police: From AI-powered traffic management to drone surveillance
Police Commissioner B Dayananda and Joint Commissioner MN Anucheth offered a rare behind-the-scenes look into the city's high-tech command centre and the tools powering smarter enforcement.
At the heart of this tech-forward approach are two key platforms: ASTRAM (Actionable Intelligence for Sustainable Traffic Management) and VANKi (Visual Aerial Network for Knowledgeable Insights).

The ASTRAM system, built on AI and big data, processes inputs from over 1,500 CCTV cameras, traffic apps, and ground intelligence to monitor 21 high-density corridors covering more than 3,500 kilometers. It tracks real-time disruptions, from accidents to protests, and pushes alerts to platforms like Google Maps, enabling quicker rerouting and emergency response.
At 165 key junctions, AI-based adaptive traffic signals now dynamically adjust signal times based on real-time traffic volume and historical patterns. The system has cut average wait times by up to 22 per cent and reduced the need for manual intervention at signals from 40 per cent to just 5 per cent.
For aerial insights, VANKi drones are deployed during peak hours, providing bird's-eye visuals of gridlocks and hidden bottlenecks, such as vehicle breakdowns not visible at ground level.
Enforcement, too, is going digital. The Intelligent Traffic Management System (ITMS) uses AI to detect violations like helmetless riding or skipping seat belts. While fines are automatically generated, officers manually review them to avoid errors. With 99.9 per cen of payments now cashless, the police claim this has nearly eliminated corruption in traffic enforcement.
To build accountability and trust, every traffic cop now wears a body camera, while patrol vehicles are tracked with IoT-enabled GPS. According to Anucheth, these devices have helped resolve most citizen complaints — often showing the officer in the right.
The police also run a priority ambulance service, where emergency vehicles can request green corridor support via an app-based system called E-Path. 'Every day, about 20 to 22 ambulances benefit from this,' said Anucheth.
The officers also showcased the newly opened Bangalore Traffic Museum, designed to educate citizens about road safety and the city's evolving traffic management systems.

VIJAYAWADA: In a significant step toward enhancing technology-driven traffic policing, Director General of Police (DGP) Harish Kumar Gupta distributed drones, patrol vehicles, and traffic equipment to the Vijayawada city traffic police on Thursday. Attending the ceremony as chief guest, DGP Gupta praised the efforts of the Vijayawada city police for their effective implementation of helmet drives, reduction of traffic congestion, and maintenance of law and order. During the programme, the DGP formally handed over 14 drone cameras, 350 baton lights, and 720 police caps to the traffic department. These tools and equipment are expected to bolster surveillance, improve monitoring, and streamline traffic regulation across the city. Following the distribution, DGP Gupta flagged off 40 newly assigned traffic patrol motor vehicles, officially inducting them into service. He personally flew one of the drones to inspect its functionality and performance. Speaking to mediapersons, the DGP lauded NTR Police Commissioner SV Rajashekhar Babu for turning the district into a national model in technology-driven policing. He praised the NTR police for effectively integrating advanced tools into their daily operations, including the AI-based AsTram system, which was recently used during the International Yoga Day celebrations in Visakhapatnam. 'All successful initiatives from the NTR district will be implemented across the state to transform the functioning of the police department,' DGP Gupta announced. He also acknowledged the demanding nature of traffic duty and commended the dedication of personnel who serve long hours under harsh conditions, including heat, pollution, and rain. Commissioner Rajashekhar Babu expressed gratitude to donors who contributed CCTV cameras, drones, and other critical equipment. 'All police stations in the district now have at least one drone for surveillance and emergency purposes,' he noted. 'We are leveraging technology to identify traffic violators and criminals in record time.' The event marked a significant leap in Andhra Pradesh Police's tech-driven governance, with plans to expand such models statewide.

The process, the company claims, does not involve gathering new data or sharing detailed information across other websites or apps. The move follows similar measures taken in other regions where the technology has already been trialled. Google says it will observe the initial US rollout closely before expanding the programme further. While the system is intended to strengthen online safety for children and teenagers, the rollout raises ongoing questions around digital privacy, surveillance, and the balance between protection and user autonomy, claims the American tech giant. Google says the effort is part of a larger framework that includes enhanced parental controls via Family Link and dedicated platforms such as YouTube Kids. However, critics have previously raised concerns about the effectiveness and transparency of algorithm-driven age detection systems.
