Ethiopian Airlines earns 7.6 bln USD in annual revenue
During a briefing in Addis Ababa, the capital of Ethiopia, Mesfin Tasew, group chief executive officer (CEO) of Ethiopian Airlines, said the revenue saw an 8 percent growth compared to the previous fiscal year.
"The airline performed well during the year amid regional conflicts in the Middle East, Ukraine, Sudan, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo, the slowing down of the world economy, and the introduction of new laws and regulations by the United States," said Tasew.
According to the CEO, the revenue was generated by transporting 19.1 million passengers, comprising 15.2 million international travelers and 3.9 million domestic passengers, as well as carrying approximately 785,000 tonnes of cargo.
Recalling that the airline launched six international passenger services during the year, the CEO said the airline's network has expanded to 145 international destinations. Besides, 13 new passenger aircraft were put into operation to step up its growth and profitability.
The CEO disclosed that the Ethiopian national carrier is set to add 20 aircraft in 2026 to accommodate the growing number of passengers.
Highlighting that Addis Ababa Bole International Airport, currently the main hub for Ethiopian Airlines, will soon reach its capacity of serving 25 million passengers per year, Tasew said the airline is undertaking the construction of a mega airport project about 45 km southeast of Addis Ababa to handle the ever-growing passengers.

Canadian int'l trade increases in June
OTTAWA, Aug. 5 (Xinhua) -- Canada's merchandise imports rose 1.4 percent, marking the first increase in four months, while exports increased 0.9 percent in June, said Statistics Canada on Tuesday. The growth of imports was largely driven by a 27.7-percent increase in imports of industrial machinery, equipment and parts, for which a one-time high-value shipment was reported in June, said the national statistical agency. Following two consecutive monthly declines, imports of motor vehicles and parts were up 2.9 percent in June. Imports of passenger cars and light trucks increased the most, largely on higher imports from Mexico, said the agency. Exports of energy products added 3.8 percent, contributing the most to the increase in total exports in June. Exports of crude oil increased the most, mainly on higher prices, said the agency. Notable decreases were observed in June in exports of unwrought aluminum, down 11.3 percent, and in exports of iron and steel products, down 11.4 percent, the agency said, adding that both products have posted steep declines in recent months. When international trade in goods and services are combined, exports increased 0.9 percent to 79.7 billion Canadian dollars (57.8 billion U.S. dollars) in June, while imports were up 1 percent to 86.3 billion Canadian dollars, said Statistics Canada.

Rapid wildfire prompts mass evacuations in Spanish resort town
MADRID, Aug. 5 (Xinhua) -- Authorities evacuated beaches, hotels, and campsites near the southern Spanish resort of Tarifa on Tuesday afternoon after a fast-moving wildfire broke out amid hot and windy conditions. The fire reportedly started around 3:00 p.m. local time (1300 GMT) in a motorhome at a campsite near Valdevaqueros beach, a place popular with surfers and kite surfers. Fanned by strong winds and dry conditions, the flames quickly spread across the surrounding area.
