Successful doubles players treat teammates to a retreat in Genting

PETALING JAYA: National men's doubles pairs Aaron Chia-Soh Wooi Yik and Man Wei Chong-Tee Kai Wun had a unique way of celebrating their recent title wins by treating the entire men's doubles squad to a short retreat in Genting Highlands.
The initiative was a show of appreciation from the two top pairs, who acknowledged the contributions of their teammates in the men's doubles camp as an important part of their success.
It was confirmed by national doubles coaching director Rexy Mainaky, who said the retreat was aimed at strengthening team spirit, providing a chance for the players to relax, and motivating each other ahead of upcoming tournaments.
Last month proved to be a memorable one for the national badminton camp. Aaron-Wooi Yik, fresh from being crowned Asian champions, carried their momentum into the Thailand Open, where they captured the title.
A week later in Kuala Lumpur, the pair reached the final of the Malaysian Masters, only to be denied by Wei Chong-Kai Wun in an all-Malaysian showdown, with the world No. 7 pair emerging victorious.
Aaron-Wooi Yik continued their impressive form by lifting the Singapore Open crown the following week in the Lion City.
Earlier in January, Wei Chong-Kai Wun had already made their mark with a title win at the Indonesian Masters at Istora Senayan.
"Aaron-Wooi Yik and Wei Chong-Kai Wun actually expressed their appreciation to the back-up men's doubles players for their support in helping them win their recent titles.
"Instead of treating them to lunch or dinner, the men's doubles group decided to go for a relaxing retreat together for some team-building and to motivate one another," said Rexy when contacted.
However, Rexy did not join the retreat this time as he was unwell. The session was instead overseen and managed by head coach Herry Iman Pierngadi.
The players are expected to return to a packed schedule starting next month, with the focus on the Japan Open from July 15–20, followed by the China Open from July 22–27.

While the partnership between Chuan Leong and Kok Leong lacked the fluid chemistry seen in more established pairings, their strong individual skills carried Malaysia all the way to the title decider. "It is a great result, considering that they paired up for the first time in a team event," said Malaysian Snooker and Billiards Federation (MSBF) president Melvin Chia. "Kok Leong used to partner with Keen Hoo, and with Chuan Leong, there's still a lack of chemistry between them. But this is also good news for us because India — who beat us — are not our Southeat Asian competitors. They had seasoned players like multiple world champion Pankaj Advani. Melvin believes the pairing has strong potential, with only minor adjustments needed heading into the Sea Games in Thailand later this year. "We don't have much to polish up — both are skilfully strong. The main area is pairing coordination. Both are sharp shooters, but Lim is weaker in safety play. That's what we need to work on in his preparation."

Newly crowned 6-Red Asian individual champion Chuan Leong made a good start when he overcame Brijesh Damani 68-58 in Colombo, Sri Lanka. However, India levelled the tie after Pankaj Arjan Advani won the next singles match against Kok Leong 66-25. India were in front after Advani-Damani combined to overcome Chuan Leong-Kok Leong 75-33 in the doubles match. Advani put up a clinical performance in the reverse singles match to seal victory for India, beating Chuan Leong 58-1. The Malaysian Snooker and Billiards Federation (MSBF) president Melvin Chia applauded the duo for fighting hard to raise the flag for Malaysia on the international stage again. "There was not much expected from both of them as this was their very first tournament since they represented Malaysia at the Cambodia SEA Games two years ago. "It was a very satisfactory achievement to bring back one gold and one silver. "Our next goal after this is to get ready for the Thailand SEA Games in December," he said. The Malaysian duo can certainly hold their heads high as they had performed well throughout the tournament to enter the final for the first time. Chuan Leong-Kok Leong were impressive earlier as they beat favourites Pakistan A 3-1 to set up a final clash against India, who carved out a 3-2 win over Hong Kong A in the other semi-final match earlier in the day. Malaysia had fought hard to beat Hong Kong B 3-2 to reach the semis and assure a medal.

Arif shows star potential, youngsters dive to four golds at SEA C'ship

PETALING JAYA: Youngster Arif Aisy Rossharisham showed he is a potential star in the making as Malaysian divers splashed to four gold medals in the South-East Asia (SEA) Championship in Singapore. Arif is on the right track to follow in the footsteps of his father Rossharisham Roslan, a former SEA Games gold medallist, after claiming gold in the boys' 14-15 3m springboard event. He won with a commanding score of 348.00 points in his first international assignment, followed by Vietnam's Chi Kien Phung (320.20) and another Malaysian Afraz Miqael Norazlan (263.95). Rossharisham had partnered Yeoh Ken Nee to clinch a first-ever silver in the men's 3m springboard synchro event in the 2006 Asian Games in Doha and is currently a coach with Sabah Sports School in Kota Kinabalu. Former international Leong Mun Yee, who is currently heading the back-up squad, hoped Arif would consider joining the national set-up. "Arif has the potential and he is trained by his father. We offered him a place in the national team last time but he rejected it. "Hopefully, he will reconsider when he is ready," said Mun Yee, who was pleased with the performance of the young divers.
