Tuesday's briefing: Brentford retain Mbeumo hope as Real Madrid prepare for Juve

The Prince of Wales issued a personal good luck message to England ahead of Euro 2025, while UEFA has postponed a decision on whether or not to admit Crystal Palace into next season's Europa League. Brentford director of football Phil Giles 'wouldn't be massively surprised' if Bryan Mbeumo is still at the club next season. The Cameroon winger, 25, has been heavily linked with a move to Manchester United, who submitted an improved bid in the region of £60million around a week ago. Giles, speaking on Monday afternoon at the unveiling of new head coach Keith Andrews, said the London club would be 'open' to a deal which was 'right for us financially', but insisted Mbeumo staying put was 'not off the table'. 'In terms of expectations, I don't actually know where that will end up,' Giles said. 'If he's here next season I wouldn't be massively surprised, it would be welcomed, we would be delighted.' 🔴 Jonny Evans has been appointed as our Head of Loans and Pathways, confirming the end of his illustrious playing career 🤝 — Manchester United (@ManUtd) June 30, 2025 Manchester United defender Jonny Evans has been handed the task of helping to progress the careers of the club's young players after confirming his retirement as a player. The 37-year-old, who won the Champions League, three Premier League titles, the FA Cup and two League Cups during his two stints at Old Trafford, has been appointed head of loans and pathways. Evans' role will see him work closely with director of football Jason Wilcox and the director of academy to ease developing talent into the first team. He told the club's official website: 'I want to officially announce my retirement from my playing career, not with sadness, but with pride, gratitude and excitement for the next chapter ahead.' The Prince of Wales has pitched in with the Lionesses' preparations for Euro 2025, helping to print names and numbers on shirts the team will wear in Switzerland, and wishing the squad 'the best of luck' for the tournament. William, who is patron of the Football Association, chatted with England head coach Sarina Wiegman and presented match jerseys to all 23 squad members at the St George's Park. In a brief personal address to the players, who begin their title defence with a group game against France in Zurich on Saturday, the prince said: 'I just want to say the best of luck to all of you. 'I have seen a few of you and said that to your faces. I know there is a good mixture of those who have been and done a few tournaments before and those whose first tournament it is.' UEFA has postponed a decision on whether or not to admit Crystal Palace into next season's Europa League. Palace thought they had secured a place in Europe's second-tier club competition thanks to their FA Cup final win over Manchester City in May but uncertainty arose as to whether they would be allowed to enter due to UEFA's multi-club ownership rules. Outgoing Palace shareholder John Textor has an interest in French club Lyon, who qualified for the same competition. UEFA announced on Monday it needed more time to make a ruling and said Lyon had reached a settlement which would exclude them from European competition next season if a decision to relegate them to the French second tier was upheld. 🏃 @KMbappe🏃 @BellinghamJude — Real Madrid C.F. 🇬🇧🇺🇸 (@realmadriden) June 30, 2025 Real Madrid face Juventus in a heavyweight Club World Cup battle in Miami, with the winners taking on either Borussia Dortmund or Monterrey, who meet in Atlanta. Meanwhile, anticipation will be building ahead of Euro 2025, which gets under way on Wednesday.

‘Dangerous' Wimbledon spectator removed after Yulia Putintseva reports ‘crazy' behaviour

Kazakhstan's Yulia Putintseva asked for a spectator to be removed after expressing concerns about their behaviour during her first-round match at Wimbledon. At the start of her match against American Amanda Anisimova on Court 15, the 30-year-old approached the umpire to report the spectator, describing the person as "crazy" and "dangerous." "Can you take him out, I am not going to continue playing until he leaves. These people are dangerous, they are crazy," Putintseva said on court, according to the BBC. It was not immediately clear what action was taken regarding the spectator, but play resumed after the chair umpire consulted security personnel. A visibly emotional Putintseva lost 6-0 6-0 in a match lasting only 44 minutes. "Following a complaint about the behaviour of a spectator at the match on Court 15, the chair umpire informed security and the matter was dealt with," a spokesperson for All England Lawn Tennis Club said. Putintseva did not speak to the media after her defeat. The world No 27 is a three-time grand slam quarter-finalist. Anisimova, meanwhile, told the BBC she believed the spectator had been saying something "when [Putintseva] was about to serve" and added: "I am sure that we were protected".

Wimbledon match suspended and boos erupt as strict rule enforced

Wimbledon match suspended and boos erupt as strict rule enforced Taylor Fritz's first-round Wimbledon match against Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard was suspended after the American stormed back to take the fourth set and force a decider The supervisor came out to halt Fritz vs Mpetshi Perricard at the conclusion of the fourth set (Image: BBC ) Taylor Fritz was left disgruntled when his first-round Wimbledon match was suspended just as he had fought back to win the fourth set in a tiebreak, pushing the game into a deciding round. The No. 4 seed found himself in a precarious position after losing the initial two sets to Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard on Court 1, under the roof. ‌ He managed to secure the third set and then made a remarkable comeback from a 1-5 deficit in the fourth set tiebreak. However, after clinching it 8-6, the supervisor arrived on court for a discussion with both players as the 11pm curfew loomed. ‌ Officials chose to postpone the match without commencing the fifth set, leading to a chorus of boos echoing around Wimbledon's second-largest showcourt as both men exited, set to return on Tuesday. Play at the All England Club must cease at 11pm each night, as part of an agreement with the local Merton Council. Yet, the match between Fritz and Mpetshi Perricard was halted more than 40 minutes prior to this rule coming into effect, reports the Express. Similarly, Alexander Zverev's match against Arthur Rinderknech was also suspended as they wrapped up the second set at 10.55pm, with the scores level at one set each. Article continues below Fritz, a two-time Wimbledon quarter-finalist, looked poised to be the latest seeded player to succumb to an upset on the opening day of the Championships. However, the recent Eastbourne champion staged an impressive comeback and suddenly the score was level at 6-7 6-7 6-4 7-6. As Fritz took his seat for the end-of-set changeover, the supervisor approached the court and gathered around the net with both players to discuss the time limit. Spectators on Court 1 began to boo upon the arrival of the supervisor, sensing that play might be halted. Fritz appeared less than thrilled by the situation. ‌ Commentator Todd Woodbridge shared his thoughts during the broadcast: "Well, if I was Taylor Fritz, I'd want to keep going here, try to keep the momentum. It's just gone 10.15pm, the curfew is at 11. If it's a long set there's a chance they might have to come off at 5-5 potentially. Would you want to do that? That's what they're weighing up." His fellow commentator Ronald McIntosh noted that three out of the four sets had gone to tiebreaks and lasted from 44 to 48 minutes each, while Woodbridge remarked: "While we're having this conversation we could've had two service games, the way they serve." McIntosh acknowledged the crowd's growing discontent as the delay continued and the likelihood of further play diminished: "Not what the crowd in attendance here on No. 1 Court want to happen," he commented. ‌ ‌ Taylor Fritz wasn't happy when his match was stopped at 10.20pm (Image: BBC ) He also highlighted the significance of the impending decision: "But a big decision about to be made here because as we pointed out in commentary, the momentum very much in favour of Taylor Fritz. I'm sure Mpetshi Perricard would love the opportunity to regroup, refuel, rehydrate, rest and to come back tomorrow for what is effectively a one-set shootout." The umpire then formally informed the audience of the suspension, despite their vocal protests: "Ladies and gentlemen, due to the late timing of the day, we will not be able to finish the match therefore the match will be postponed to tomorrow. Play is suspended," he declared. Article continues below Fritz and Perricard packed up and left the court around 10.20pm – a good 40 minutes before play had to be halted. Woodbridge voiced the discontent of the crowd. He said: "I'm a little surprised by that decision. I think the referee has come out too early, could've given them the option, but we still had 45 minutes to go to curfew. The sets that we had have all been under 45 minutes, they've been close to it but there was definitely the chance of an outcome there tonight. "I think Mpetshi Perricard, good for him, he should get off and be very happy with that. Taylor Fritz will be a little annoyed by that decision, I have no doubt, because he played an exceptional tiebreak from 5-1 down to hang in. At least he's still in the tournament, he's got to think positively, but this was quite an interesting moment on day one."
