
3-year study to help First Nations in Ontario's far north adapt to climate change
Indigenous communities in Ontario's far north are participating in a three-year study to understand the impacts of climate change and how communities along the James Bay coast can better adapt to those changes.
"What we want to do is prepare our communities," said Barb Duffin, director of Cree Geomatics with Mushkegowuk Council, which represents seven northern First Nations.
"So they're seeing flooding in the spring, they're seeing dryness in the summer, shorter times for freezing up for road transportation, changing tides."
Cree Geomatics is working with Mushkegowuk's lands and resources department, Environment and Climate Change Canada, and the Up North On Climate centre at Laurentian University for the study.
One of the key components for the research will be the collection of aerial photos of the coastline in July, which can be compared with archival maps and photos to show recent erosion.
"The biggest thing we want to do is compare now what we're taking to what's available, say back to 1960 or 1970," Duffin said.
She said there's also a traditional knowledge component to the research project.
"Traditional knowledge has been collected over the last decade and a half, two decades on different projects," Duffin said.
"And that information that's given to us and documented by our elders and from our land users shows us where they've used the land."
Duffin said some Cree communities, such as Kashechewan First Nation, are already prone to flooding in the spring.
"Do we start building our homes on stilts?" she asked.
Roxanne Metlin, the climate resiliency co-ordinator with Mushkegowuk Council, said climate change has also affected wildlife in Ontario's far north.
"You have the elders going out with the young harvesters. What they know or what they can teach… about growing up on that land is changing," she said.
Metlin said some animal species more common to the south, such as porcupines, are now migrating north due to the warming climate.
That means locals need to learn about new plants and animals that were not typically found in the region.

The Nature Conservancy of Canada (NCC) is calling on everyone to help scientists better understand the biodiversity around them for the Big Backyard BioBlitz campaign. (Laurence Brisson Dubreuil/CTV News) A nature challenge happening across Canada is calling on everyone —including Montrealers — to help scientists better understand the biodiversity around them. The Big Backyard BioBlitz, launched by the Nature Conservancy of Canada (NCC), runs until Aug. 4. The idea is simple: step outside, spot something wild, and snap a photo. From balconies in the Plateau to wooded trails in the Laurentians, participants are being asked to document the plants, animals, and fungi they encounter. (Laurence Brisson Dubreuil/CTV News) 'You don't have to be a biologist or a nature expert to join in,' said Jensen Edwards, spokesperson for the NCC. 'The BioBlitz is really accessible to everybody. In fact, one of the most rewarding parts is how much people learn just by taking part.' Participants can upload their sightings to the NCC's website or use the free iNaturalist app, which helps identify what they're seeing. The app uses image recognition to offer suggestions, and then experts step in to verify the results. 'There are way more people out there with smartphones than there are conservation scientists,' Edwards said. 'This really helps scale up the research, and together these observations are a big help.' (Laurence Brisson Dubreuil/CTV News) According to Edwards, many participants naturally gravitate toward more familiar species. 'People are great at spotting birds, mammals,' he said, 'but when it comes to insects and fungi, they're often overlooked species,' despite them playing a huge role in ecosystems. The NCC launched the BioBlitz in 2020. Since then, nearly 200,000 nature observations have been submitted across the country. While some of the sightings are fairly common, others have caught Edwards' attention. 'Last year, someone off the coast of Gaspésie spotted a blue whale,' he recalled. 'Another person west of Calgary photographed a whooping crane. Just 100 years ago, there were fewer than 20 of those left in Canada.' Still, Edwards emphasized that the most valuable contributions aren't necessarily the rare ones. 'Even the most everyday observations can tell scientists a lot,' he said. In Quebec, where rapid urban development and climate change are threatening native ecosystems, every data point helps researchers track how species are adapting — or disappearing. The observations collected during the BioBlitz feed into a growing national database, helping scientists map species migration, identify at-risk habitats, and better understand how to protect Canada's natural landscapes. Edwards said the challenge also has benefits for those taking part. 'People just end up deepening their relationship with nature,' he said. 'They start to pay more attention, they gain an understanding of what lives around them and that leads to caring more about conservation.' Whether it's a squirrel in Jeanne-Mance Park, a mushroom in Mount Royal, or a bird perched outside your apartment window, Edwards encourages everyone to document it.

University of Waterloo study finds female pilots outperform their male counterparts under pressure

(Heather Senoran/CTV News) A new study from researchers at the University of Waterloo is challenging the gender biases in aviation. Using eye-tracking technology and a high-fidelity flight simulator, the study found that female pilots performed better under pressure when put in a mock-emergency situation. Ten men and ten women participated in the study, and all were general aviation pilots with the same experience. Researchers recorded where each participant looked and how they responded. 'We have data that challenges traditional assumptions in aviation these days, and that's kind of groundbreaking to have this evidence to support the fact that women belong in this industry,' said Naila Ayala, lead author of the UW study. She said the women appeared to be better at keeping control and making decisions in stressful flight situations. In one scenario, participants had to complete standard flight tasks but with a twist – unexpected and total engine failure. 'Female participants were able to manage that much better in these high stress scenarios versus those male pilots who ended up having a little bit more error, with respect to things like the airspeed they're trying to control, while coming down from engine failure and safely landing the plane,' Ayala said. The simulator definitely put participants in the hot seat. 'They had to identify the emergency, understand where they were located with respect to the runway or the closest field they could possibly land, and then maneuver the plane to said space where they could land the plane and let the air traffic controllers know that there was a mayday and there's an emergency onboard,' explained Ayala. Aviation student Preksha Shah was one of the study participants. She said she didn't feel too stressed when the engine suddenly failed in the simulation. 'I was immediately like, 'Okay, we had an engine failure, and the runway is right there. Now I just need to land.'' Shah said she always wanted to be a pilot. Her goal is to one day be a commercial pilot. 'For me personally, I'm an adrenaline junkie, so I love flying,' she explained. 'And it's also just really cool.' The study highlighted the importance of looking beyond surface-level indicators when measuring pilot performance. Especially since the aviation field has long been dominated by men. 'Only six or seven per cent of airline pilots are women,' said Suzanne Kearns, an aviation professor and founder of the Waterloo Institute for Sustainable Aeronautics. 'That's a tremendous challenge when you think about there not being enough pilots in the system and how do we attract and retain the workforce to support the future.' As for why female pilots did better in the study – the answer isn't clear cut. 'There's no clear tie to very distinct gender differences that have been shown in the neurocognitive research, just because it's too complex of a task to tie to one specific type of mental capability,' said Ayala. The team hopes their findings will help shape what the industry looks like for all future pilots.

How do roadside environments impact Alberta's bee population? A U of A student is working to find out
A student at the University of Alberta is spending her summer trekking through ditches. As part of a research project, she set up 22 traps along various highways outside of Edmonton. 'There are a few criteria we had for our sites. One was that they had to be highways that were single lane, ranging between 4,000 and 7,000 vehicles per day as well as next to cropland, both across the highway as well as adjacent to the highway,' said U of A masters student Shea Giesbrecht. She's studying the ecological role of roadside environments on Alberta's native bee population. 'We're looking at how flowers and shelter belts, which are strips of trees next to crop land, possibly impact either negatively or positively native bees,' she said. Each site has two tent-like traps so that insects can be caught from all directions. 'So we can see where the insects are flying to and from. So we can see if they're coming across the highway, going to the highway or traveling along the highway,' said Giesbrecht. 'At all of our sites we have noticed a trend of insects following along the highway rather than crossing or coming from them,' she added. Giesbrecht also pays close attention to what is growing in the ditches. 'We will do a floral survey. So we count how many flowers and see what species are here,' she said. Her goal is to provide insight on how to better manage roadside environments to support the bee population. 'So for growers or landowners we can either tell them to continue supporting or plant shelter belts or maybe discourage them from planting further shelter belts if they end up being negative,' said Giesbrecht. 'Native bees are incredibly important for growers. They actually contribute $2.8 billion to Canadian farmers annually,' she added. The study will also provide valuable information to the people who manage roadsides. 'We can hopefully tell them flowers are actually really good for roadsides, maybe consider mowing at a different time. It has recently been mowed during peak flower season so maybe changing that and consider possibly also planting native flowers as well in ditches,' she said. Giesbrecht will continue collecting data until the end of August and expects to have a detailed analysis complete by next year.
