Justin Duane Burton fronts Adelaide court for alleged Lewis Parkin murder

The man accused of stabbing to death the son of a police officer has fronted court and indicated he is negotiating with prosecutors. Justin Duane Burton appeared at Adelaide Magistrates Court on Thursday morning via videolink from remand, where he has been held following his arrest for the alleged murder of Lewis Parkin, 23, at a hostel in Adelaide's Red Light strip in November last year. Police allege Mr Burton, 43, stabbed Mr Parkin inside the West End Motel and Backpackers on Hindley St in the Adelaide CBD shortly before 8pm on a Friday. The two men were known to each other and the stabbing was not considered a random incident. Mr Parkin was taken to hospital with life-threatening injuries and died a short time later. Police allege Mr Burton left the area following the stabbing and was arrested a short time later near the River Torrens. He has been charged with one count of murder. Defence lawyer Stephen Ey, for Mr Burton, told Chief Magistrate Mary-Louise Hribal on Thursday that his client did not admit the charge and negotiations with the prosecution had commenced. An answer charge hearing – where Mr Burton will enter his pleas – was listed for August 12. Supporters of Mr Parkin filled the courtroom on Thursday.
