Penang govt replaces Toyota Camry as its fleet vehicle
Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow said that, as a matter of policy, vehicles for Exco members and senior officials are typically replaced every six years.
The current fleet was purchased in 2019, following the initial replacement cycle that began in 2013.
'The older vehicles are still in use, primarily for carpooling among officers who require transportation. The vehicles are not being sold or left unused,' he said during his winding-up speech on the opening address by the Penang Yang di-Pertua Negeri, Tun Ramli Ngah Talib, at today's state legislative assembly.
He added that the state government has spent nearly RM650,000 on maintaining these cars over their service period.
Last Tuesday, Chow confirmed the procurement of 15 Toyota Camrys by the state government at a total cost of RM3.31 million, inclusive of sales tax and excise duties, equivalent to RM220,783 per unit.
Ten are allocated to Exco members, three to former officials, and one each to the Speaker and Deputy Speaker. The vehicles were handed over on April 4.

Public Warned Against Fake 'Datuk Seri' Titles Used In Investment Scams
KUALA LUMPUR, July 25 (Bernama) -- At least six individuals have fallen victim to scams involving the misuse of the 'Datuk Seri' title, with total losses estimated at nearly half a million ringgit, says MCA Public Services and Complaints Department head Datuk Seri Michael Chong. He said one of the reports involved a man falsely claiming to be an 'Ahli Istana Anak Angkat' to gain the trust of victims and solicit investments, including a case where a Datin lost RM400,000. 'We've checked with the Istana and there is no such title. It's completely fabricated,' he told a press conference at Wisma MCA here today. Chong said three of the six cases were business-related scams while the others were enquiries — some from overseas — to verify the legitimacy of individuals claiming to hold honorific titles. He added that the scammer had exploited public events and official functions by placing his name and image among VIPs and ministers to boost credibility. Meanwhile, Majlis Datuk Persekutuan Malaysia (MDPM) president Datuk Alvin Tee Guan Pian reminded the public that federal titles were only awarded to those who had made significant contributions to the nation. 'Fake titleholders often use these credentials to secure business deals and contracts. The Securities Commission takes illegal investment schemes seriously, and offenders can be charged in court,' he said. Separately, the President of Majlis Datuk Dato' Malaysia (MDDM), Datuk Samson David Maman, has urged the relevant parties to expedite proposed amendments to the Awards Act 2017 (Act 787) to curb the misuse of honorific titles. "It's going internally. But we know there are many proposed amendments across various acts. Ours is just one of them. Time will come when we are on the priority list,' he said at the same press conference.

PWSC implements urgent measures to mitigate water supply issues
GEORGE TOWN — Penang Water Supply Corporation (PWSC) has implemented immediate measures to reduce disruptions and low water pressure during peak hours in several areas across the state, particularly in Seberang Perai Selatan (SPS), amid the current hot weather. Its chief executive officer, Datuk K. Pathmanathan, said the company's move to optimise its pipeline system, including valve adjustments, to channel more water to affected areas, has helped shorten the duration of interruptions. Currently, consumers experience low water pressure during the peak hours of between 6 pm and 11 pm, but efforts are in progress to reduce the disruption to just two to three hours daily. 'July and August are the most challenging months due to higher demand and usage during the hot season, especially with ongoing development projects. 'During peak hours, some 3,000 to 4,000 consumer accounts, mostly in SPS, are affected by low pressure, and we've even received complaints of complete supply loss for three to five hours,' he told reporters at the Air Itam Dam today. He was speaking after officiating the Auxiliary Police Hub of Perbadanan Bekalan Air Holdings Bhd, launched by Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow. Also present was Penang Acting police chief Datuk Mohd Alwi Zainal Abidin Pathmanathan said that any further increase in water pressure could raise the level of non-revenue water, including the risk of leaks and burst pipes, as parts of the piping system in the affected areas are more than 50 years old. He noted that two major projects have been approved as long-term solutions for SPS. The first is the Sungai Kerian Water Treatment Plant project, with a capacity of 114 million litres per day (MLD), which is already underway and expected to be completed within 14 to 18 months. 'The second is a new 50 MLD Dissolved Air Flotation water treatment module at Sungai Kerian, which was recently approved by the board of directors and is expected to be completed within 12 to 14 months,' he said. Affected areas in SPS include Sungai Bakap, Nibong Tebal, Jawi, Simpang Ampat, Bukit Tambun, and Batu Kawan. Other impacted locations are Bukit Penara and Balik Pulau in the Southwest District, as well as several parts of Seberang Perai Tengah. — BERNAMA
