PM Modi, Argentine President Agree To Diversify Bilateral Trade Basket
Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Argentine President Javier Milei on Saturday agreed to diversify India-Argentina trade basket and vowed to expand cooperation in a range of critical areas such as defence, security, energy and minerals.
In their wide-ranging talks, the two leaders emphasised on boosting defence cooperation between the two countries as it will serve each other's strategic interests.
PM Modi arrived in Buenos Aires on Friday on a two-day trip in the third leg of his five-nation tour. Though PM Modi visited Argentina in 2018 to attend the G20 Summit, it is the first bilateral visit to the South American country by an Indian prime minister after a gap of 57 years.
In a social media post, PM Modi said he and President Milei discussed ways to diversify trade ties and enhance cooperation in sectors such as agriculture, defence, security and energy.
"There is immense scope in areas like pharmaceuticals and sports as well," he said.
The prime minister described his meeting with President Milei as "excellent".
"We are marking 75 years of India-Argentina diplomatic relations and 5 years since we elevated our relationship to a Strategic Partnership. We have covered significant ground in our bilateral relations, but we agree that the journey ahead is even more promising," the prime minister posted on X.
Secretary (East) in the Ministry of External Affairs Periasamy Kumaran said the two leaders agreed to enhance India-Argentina collaboration across a range of sectors, including trade and commerce, technology, defence, space, health and pharmaceuticals.
PM Modi and President Milei also agreed to further deepen the strategic partnership, he said adding they discussed the necessity to expand and diversify trade.
At a press conference, Kumaran said Prime Minister Modi sought Argentina's support in expanding the India-MERCOSUR trade agreement, noting that it could deepen trade ties between the two nations as well.
The preferential trade agreement (PTA) is aimed at expanding economic ties between India and the MERCOSUR bloc that includes Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay, and Uruguay.
PM Modi and President Milei also underlined the need to enhance access for agricultural products in each other's markets and issued instructions to respective officials to set up a joint working group on agriculture.
The relationship between the two countries was elevated to strategic partnership during the visit to India of the then Argentine President Mauricio Macri in February 2019.
The two sides have been cooperating in several key areas such as trade, defence, critical minerals, oil and gas, nuclear energy, agriculture, culture and technology.
India and Argentina have significant cooperation in the mineral resources sector, particularly in lithium -- a critical input for India's green energy transition.
An MoU on cooperation in the field of mineral resources was signed in August 2022. The first meeting of the joint working group set up under the framework of the MoU was held in January.
The India-Argentina bilateral trade has been on an upswing. The trade volume more than doubled in three years from 2019 to 2022, peaking at USD 6.4 billion in 2022.
In 2021 and 2022, India was Argentina's fourth largest trading partner.
In 2024, total annual bilateral trade between India and Argentina was USD 5.23 billion, positioning India as Argentina's fifth-largest trading partner and export destination.

NIT-R portal for NRI, foreign origin students admission to institutes
ROURKELA: To simplify admission of candidates for 105 institutes of the country eligible for both Direct Admission of Students Abroad (DASA) and Central Seat Allocation Board (CSAB) special categories, the NIT-Rourkela has created a single common portal. The move is aimed at simplifying admission process for foreign-origin and NRI students. As coordinating institute for both DASA and CSAB, NIT-R has announced commencement of a common registration process for candidates seeking admission to undergraduate programmes. The institutes include 31 NITs, 26 IIITs, one IIEST, three SPAs and 44 technical institutes funded fully or partially by the central or state government for the academic year 2025-26. Students from over 50 countries including NRIs and Overseas Citizens of India (OCIs)/ Persons of Indian Origins (PIOs) are allowed admission in higher institutions through DASA. On the other hand, CSAB Special is primarily meant for students with Indian citizenship. CSAB-Special conducts supplementary admission rounds held after Joint Seat Allocation Authority (JoSAA) to utilise the remaining seats across various centrally funded technical institutes and help prevent wastage. Reliable sources in the NIT-R explained that candidates with NRI status are eligible for admission both under DASA and CSAB-Special categories, while from 2023 onwards the candidates with OCI and PIO status too became eligible to apply in both categories. Previously, they were needed to apply in different portals making the process for seat allocation cumbersome and overlapping of applications also created confusion. Integration of two separate platforms with introduction of a common portal ( provides single registration window for two distinct admission schemes and will help reduce administrative burden, ensure clear timelines and simplify document handling or onboarding process, they added. Chairman for DASA & CSAB 2025 and NIT-R Director Prof. K Umamaheshwar Rao said the coordinated admission process reflects Indian government's commitment to simplifying global access to its higher education institutions. Telangana minister hits back at BJP over its party state chief's letter to CM
Hyderabad: Telangana Transport and Backward Classes Welfare Minister Ponnam Prabhakar on Sunday slammed the state BJP leaders for writing letters to the state government over its alleged failures. Day after newly-appointed BJP state president Ramchander Rao wrote a letter to Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy, alleging non-fulfilment of promises made by the Congress party, the minister launched a counter-attack with an open reply to the BJP. Ponnam Prabhakar said that it's ironic that those who "failed" to get even one paisa for the state from the Centre, were writing letters to them. He described the BJP government at the Centre under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi as a "mega failure". He alleged that the BJP backtracked on all the promises made to people in the last three elections. The minister said that the BJP government has a long list of "failures". "It's laughable that leaders of such a party are writing letters to the chief minister," he said. "Apart from making grand promises, inciting hatred, and spreading lies, you have done nothing. Farmers, youth, women, the poor, SC, ST, BC, minorities... you have a history of deceiving every section of society. If we write about your failures, it would be as long as the Ramayana; if we listen, it would be as vast as the Mahabharata,' the minister told the BJP leader in his response on 'X'. The Congress leader listed out the promises made by the BJP in the elections which were never fulfilled. These include a monthly pension for small and marginal farmers above 60 years of age, increasing to Rs 6,000 annual Kisan Samman Nidhi for farmers' crop investment support, filling 10 lakh vacancies in the government, Rs 15 lakh to every household and two crore jobs annually. "What have you done for Telangana in 11 years? Not a single rupee has come to Telangana. What have you, or the 8 BJP MPs and two Union Ministers from this state, done?," he asked. Prabhakar asked the BJP leaders about their stance on Prime Minister Modi's statement in Parliament, allegedly criticising the formation of Telangana state. The minister came down heavily on the BJP for not fulfilling the commitments made in the Andhra Pradesh Reorganisation Act. He advised the state BJP leaders to write letters to Prime Minister Modi to fulfil the promises made to Telangana. The Congress leader said that writing a letter to the Congress government formed one and a half years ago, and asking it to do everything in a short period reflects the "blind hatred" of BJP leaders.
