Carolina man jailed for 15 years for rape

The Citizen03-07-2025
The Carolina Regional Court has convicted and sentenced Linda Nicholas Masango (25) to 15 years' direct imprisonment for the rape of an adult woman.
The National Prosecuting Authority's (NPA) provincial spokesperson, Monica Nyuswa, said the incident occurred on August 28, 2022, when the complainant visited a tavern in Carolina. She met the accused on the day.
'After socialising and consuming alcohol together, the accused began making romantic advances toward her. He later accompanied the complainant as she walked home. Along the way, he forced her into a ditch, raped her, and fled the scene.'
Nyuswa said the complainant immediately reported the matter to the police, and the accused was traced and arrested.
'In court, the accused claimed he was intoxicated and denied raping the complainant.'

However, State Prosecutor Makhosonke Mashinini led compelling evidence, including the complainant's testimony and a J88 medical report, which confirmed injuries to the victim's genitals. The court found his account credible and rejected the accused's version.
Mashinini argued that women in South Africa have the right to move freely and safely in public spaces and to enjoy themselves without fear of violence or harassment.
He urged the court to impose the prescribed minimum sentence.

Nyuswa said in sentencing the court acknowledged the alarming levels of gender-based violence in the country and emphasised the importance of protecting vulnerable members of society. The accused was sentenced to 15 years of direct imprisonment and was also declared unfit to possess a firearm in terms of Section 103 of the Firearms Control Act 60 of 2000.

26 illegal miners granted bail in Barberton court

Twenty-six of more than 480 people arrested in a major illegal mining crackdown in Barberton have been granted bail. The Barberton magistrate's court on Monday released the 26 on R2,000 bail each after the court considered they had no previous convictions, had fixed addresses and no pending cases. They are among hundreds arrested during a joint operation between Sheba Mine and police on Friday, as part of the ongoing Vala Umgodi operation targeting illegal mining syndicates. The arrests included four juveniles. National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) spokesperson Monica Nyuswa said 'they face charges, including trespassing, theft of gold-bearing material and contravention of the Immigration Act'.

DA NCOP member welcomes reports NPA to charge Nigerian rapper for crashing luxury car in CT

CAPE TOWN - Democratic Alliance (DA) member of the National Council of Provinces (NCOP) on Security and Justice, Nicholas Gotsell, has welcomed reports that the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) has decided to charge a Nigerian rapper for crashing his McLaren in Sea Point in March. The musician, known as 3GAR Baby, is expected to appear in a Cape Town court soon for crashing his luxury supercar at high speed. ALSO READ: NPA confirms Nigerian rapper 3GAR Baby will face charges of reckless driving The NPA said the musician would be summoned to appear in court soon to face charges of reckless or negligent driving. It's believed that the Nigerian rapper, whose real name is Prince Daniel Obioma, was driving at over 200km/h when he lost control of his vehicle and slammed into a pavement on High Level Road on 1 March. Photos of him with blood gushing down his face circulated on social media shortly after the crash. Gotsell said the wheels of justice were finally turning after months of pressure on the South African Police Service (SAPS) to investigate the matter. "Over the past months, Cape Town and surrounds have been plagued by serious incidents involving luxury vehicles. Nobody, not even a so-called celebrity, is above the law." It's understood that a passenger was also injured in the accident.

Prince Daniel Obioma, aka 3GAR, charged with negligent driving after McLaren crash in Sea Point

The driver of the McLaren that had a high-speed accident in Sea Point will be prosecuted. Image: Supplied Nigerian rapper Prince Daniel Obioma, known by his stage name 3GAR, is facing prosecution for reckless or negligent driving, as confirmed by the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA). This follows a serious crash involving his McLaren 570S in Sea Point earlier this year. The incident occurred on March 1 on High Level Road, where the high-performance vehicle allegedly reached speeds of up to 200 km/h before crashing into a wall. Obioma was hospitalised after the incident. Despite CCTV footage capturing the vehicle travelling at high speed and a public outcry, no arrest has yet been made, and charges have not been formally laid. Video Player is loading. However, regional NPA spokesperson Eric Ntabazalila confirmed: 'We have decided to prosecute. He will be summoned, but he has not yet been served with a J175. There is no court date at this stage.' The delay in taking action has drawn criticism from political figures, including DA MP Nicholas Gotsell, who serves on the Select Committee for Security and Justice. 'The wheels of justice are turning, whether you are an ordinary motorist or a so-called celebrity. Nobody is above the law,' said Gotsell. 'After months of pressure on SAPS to stop stalling and shift out of neutral to finalise the investigation, the NPA has now confirmed that the driver will face charges of reckless or negligent driving. Reckless drivers have no place tearing through our neighbourhoods and endangering lives, no matter where you live or what you drive.'
