After SBI Kannada Row, Bengaluru Founder Plans To Relocate Office To Pune
"If this language nonsense is to continue, I do not want my non-Kannada speaking staff to be the next 'victim'," entrepreneur Kaushik Mukherjee wrote on X.
He said the decision stemmed from concerns raised by his employees, adding he "agreed to their [point of view]."
Today I took a decision to wind up our Bangalore office in the next 6 months and move it to Pune. If this language nonsense is to continue, I do not want my non Kannada speaking staff to be the next "victim".
This idea was mooted by the staff themselves.
I agreed to their POV. https://t.co/M9abD2OYOD

This came after a recent incident at an SBI branch in Bengaluru's Chandapura area, where a manager refused to speak in Kannada with a customer, saying, "This is India, I'll speak Hindi, not Kannada."
The video of the interaction went viral, drawing sharp criticism from Kannada activists and political leaders alike.
Kaushik Mukherjee's post was in response to Bengaluru South MP Tejasvi Surya, who earlier shared the video and called the manager's conduct "not acceptable."
"If you are doing customer interface work in Karnataka, especially in a sector like banking, it is important to communicate to customers in the language they know," Mr Surya wrote.
He spoke of his long-standing demand that banks and other public-facing institutions in Karnataka ensure that local-language-speaking staff are posted.
Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah also weighed in on the SBI incident, calling the manager's behaviour "strongly condemnable" and urging the Union Finance Ministry to implement cultural and language sensitivity training for banking staff nationwide.
The manager has since been transferred, and both the bank and the manager have issued apologies.
The manager, in a statement in Kannada, promised to be more sensitive in future dealings with customers.
According to the Kannada Development Authority (KDA), there has been a growing trend of non-Kannadigas being posted in public-facing roles in banks. This, the KDA says, is creating a disconnect with local citizens who expect services in their mother tongue. As per Reserve Bank of India norms, all banks are mandated to provide services in English, Hindi, and the regional language.

Will UK bring back tax-free shopping? What retailers demand from govt
UK retailers are renewing efforts to persuade Chancellor of the Exchequer Rachel Reeves to bring back tax-free shopping for tourists, as the government prepares to set out its plan to boost the so-called visitor economy. Making purchases exempt from VAT could result in £3.65 billion ($4.9 billion) of additional spending by visitors from the European Union, the Association of International Retail said in a submission to ministers published Tuesday. That's on top of about £1.5 billion of spending by non-EU visitors the lobby group said was diverted from the UK when it scrapped tax-free shopping in 2021. The report sent to the Department for Culture, Media and Sport is the latest salvo in a long tussle between retailers and the government. Then Chancellor of the Exchequer Rishi Sunak used the UK's exit from the EU as a chance to end a system that let travelers reclaim the 20% VAT sales tax on their purchases. Since then, Conservative and Labour governments — with the exception of the short-lived administration of former Prime Minister Liz Truss — agreed with Sunak's assessment that the policy cost the Treasury more than it gained. Subsequent analysis by the Office for Budget Responsibility backed that view. Reeves faces a fiscal shortfall heading into this year's autumn budget, after expensive U-turns on welfare cuts and amid reduced prospects for growth. That makes any change to her stance on tax-free shopping less likely, even as she faces calls to help companies after she raised payroll taxes this year. But British retailers argue they have lost out to countries like France and Spain that offer tax-free shopping to non-EU visitors, and have repeatedly put forward the argument that the Treasury is not taking into account the wider uplift in spending in considering the impact of the policy on the public coffers. Hundreds of retailers including Mulberry Group Plc, Fortnum & Mason Plc and John Lewis signed an open letter to Reeves last year calling for the government to reinstate the policy. According to the Association of International Retail, the UK would become the only country in Europe offering VAT rebates to 450 million EU consumers. It also cited figures showing visitor spending in the UK was 92% of 2019 levels last year, compared with 106% in Spain and 110% in France.

SBI has classified Reliance Communications, Anil Ambani as ‘fraud': Centre tells Parliament
The State Bank of India has classified Reliance Communications and its promoter-director Anil Ambani as 'fraud' and is in the process of registering a complaint with the Central Bureau of Investigation, the Union government told Parliament on Monday. In a written reply in the Lok Sabha, Minister of State for Finance Pankaj Chaudhary said that the entities were classified as fraud on June 13 in accordance with the Reserve Bank of India's Master Directions on Fraud Risk Management and the Board-approved Policy on Classification, Reporting and Management of Frauds. The minister added that the SBI reported the classification to the RBI on June 24. On July 1, the telecom firm informed the Bombay Stock Exchange about the fraud classification as part of its disclosure compliance. The credit exposure of the SBI in Reliance Communications includes a fund-based principal outstanding amount of Rs 2,227.64 crore, along with an accrued interest and expenses with effect from August 26, 2016, and a non-fund based bank guarantee of Rs 786.52 crore, Chaudhary said. He added that the telecom firm was undergoing the Corporate Insolvency Resolution Process under the 2016 Insolvency and Bankruptcy Code. The code provides a legal framework to resolve insolvency cases and release non-performing assets quickly. The minister added that the resolution plan was approved by the Committee of Creditors and filed with the National Company Law Tribunal in Mumbai on March 6, 2020. The approval of the tribunal is awaited. The SBI had earlier classified the account and Ambani as 'fraud' in November 2020 and filed a complaint with the CBI in January 2021. However, the complaint was returned in view of a 'status quo' order passed on January 6, 2021 by the Delhi High Court, he added. The Supreme Court had in March 2023 mandated that lenders provide borrowers with an opportunity to represent themselves before classifying their accounts as fraud. In view of the order, the fraud classification in the account was reversed by the SBI in September 2023, the minister said. The reply added that the classification process was re-run and the account was once again classified as 'fraud' after due process as per a circular issued by the RBI on July 15, 2024. Last month, Reliance Communications in a regulatory filing said that it had received a letter on June 23 from the SBI on its decision to classify the loan account of the telecom firm as 'fraud' and to report Ambani to the RBI. In 2019, the telecom firm had said that it had decided to file for bankruptcy through the National Company Law Tribunal after failing to sell assets to pay up a debt of around Rs 45,000 crore.
