Defamation case: Delhi HC takes exception to TMC MP Saket Gokhale's affidavit
A Division Bench of Justices Navin Chawla and Renu Bhatnagar orally remarked that the contents of Gokhale's affidavit tendering an apology were not acceptable after his counsel highlighted the fact that the document was lying in defect with the registry. Observing that the language used could not be accepted, the Justice Chawla-led Bench directed Gokhale to withdraw his affidavit in the present form and file it afresh.
It clarified that the Delhi High Court will take up his appeal for hearing only once the defective affidavit is withdrawn and a fresh affidavit is filed with the registry. The matter is likely to be heard next on July 24. During the course of the hearing, senior advocate Maninder Singh, appearing on Puri's behalf, referred to earlier coercive orders of the court, which had asked the TMC leader that why he should not be sent to civil prison over non-compliance and ordered attachment of the salary, which he draws as a Member of Parliament until the sum of Rs 50 lakh was deposited.
Last month, Gokhale tendered an apology and in a post on X, wrote, "I unconditionally apologise for having put out a series of tweets against Amb. Lakshmi Murdeshwar Puri on 13th and 23rd June 2021, which tweets contained wrong and unverified allegations in relation to the purchase of property by Amb. Puri abroad, which I sincerely regret.'
The defamation suit was filed following Gokhale's successive X posts accusing Lakshmi Puri, wife of Union Minister Hardeep Singh Puri, of purchasing property in Switzerland disproportionate to her income. He also named Hardeep Puri in the tweets.
The Delhi High Court had held that the plaintiff suffered irreparable harm on account of Gokhale's defamatory statements. It said: "The defendant (Gokhale) is restrained from publishing further defamatory content against the plaintiff. Damages to the tune of Rs 50,00,000 are awarded to the plaintiff for the harm caused to her reputation."

New Delhi, July 9: Special income tax squads have been appointed in the four metropolitan towns of Delhi, Bombay, Calcutta and Madras to check unaccounted money invested in luxury houses. The special squads have been appointed in accordance with the Prime Minister's 20-point economic programme. The special squads will consist of a number of units depending upon the area to be covered in each metropolitan town. To begin with these squads will function in more posh and conspicuous localities where there has been a spurt in the recent past in the construction of luxury houses. The special squads will collect information about the land, its sale price, the plinth area, the number of stories constructed and other details. This will be followed by spot inspection by income-tax officers and executive engineers who will immediately report the variations in the estimated value of the property and the actual value of the property given by the owners. Where the properties are either not disclosed or where the difference in valuation is 15 per cent of the squad valuation or Rs. 25,000, whichever is more, action will be initiated for realisation of income-tax or wealth tax as the case may be, along with arrears and penalties. Each inspection squad and the income-tax authorities concerned have been asked to submit fortnightly reports of the action taken. The appointment of the special squads is in addition to the action initiated by income-tax authorities to discover tax evasion through under-valuation of properties for purposes of sale.

Top officials of Hyderabad cricket body held for forgery, graft
Representative image HYDERABAD: Telangana police on Wednesday arrested five people, including three of the most senior office-bearers of the Hyderabad Cricket Association (HCA), in a case of forgery and misappropriation of funds. Among those arrested are president A Jagan Mohan Rao, treasurer C J Srinivas Rao and CEO Suneel Kante. Two top executives of a city-based cricket club too have been arrested. The role of another senior HCA office bearer is being probed. Sources said the investigators also took into account the findings of a vigilance and enforcement inquiry report on allegations against the HCA chief and others of harassing the SRH management for free tickets during IPL. It was also alleged Rao, along with some HCA apex council members, misappropriated over Rs 2.3 crore from the association. CID officials told TOI they discovered Rao had used a forged cricket club membership to qualify for the 2023 HCA elections. "Rao furnished a forged membership of Gowlipura Cricket Club to contest in the elections and won," said a CID official. CID arrested Gowlipura Cricket Club president G Kavita and her husband Rajender Yadav, who is the general secretary of the club, for aiding Rao in committing the offence. CID officials also alleged that Rao, along with treasurer C J Srinivas Rao and CEO Suneel Kante, who are apex council members of HCA, misappropriated HCA funds under the guise of performing their official duties. CID picked up Rao from his residence in Gachibowli, Srinivas from Padma Rao Nagarand Kante from Begumpet. Rajender Yadav and Kavita were taken into custody later in the night. HCA had copped a lot of flak this IPL season over excessive demands for complimentary passes. SRH had alleged illtreatment by HCA and threatened to shift their operations out of the city. The team management alleged that as against the agreement of giving 3,900 complimentary passes to the association for every match — 10% of the stadium's capacity — the HCA president was asking for 20 more passes. The issue even threatened to derail a match between SRH and LSG.

Irregularities in solar pump project implemented by Anert, alleges Ramesh Chennithala
Thiruvananthapuram: Congress working committee (CWC) member Ramesh Chennithala on Wednesday demanded a detailed investigation into the irregularities in the Rs 240-crore tender to make grid-connected agriculture pumps solar under PM-Kusum scheme. After releasing documents, including the sanction order from Union ministry, Chennithala said there was an increase of over Rs 100 crore in total project cost and a misappropriation of more than Rs 100 crore in obtaining a loan of Rs 175 crore from Nabard. Agency for new and renewable energy research and technology (Anert) was given the order by Union ministry of new and renewable energy in May 2022 to convert 9,348 agricultural pumps to solar. Meanwhile, electricity minister K Krishnankutty instructed additional chief secretary of energy department to investigate the allegations of irregularities and submit a report. He said no one responsible for any irregularities found in the investigation would be protected. Appropriate further actions will be taken after receiving the investigation report, he said. Work orders were given to companies that didn't mention amounts in bids, grading was not followed in converting solar pumps and pumps were set up at 146% more than the benchmark set by govt of India. State govt returned around 85% of the subsidy to Centre," he said. Chennithala said the irregularities began when Anert CEO, who is authorised to call tenders worth up to Rs 5 crore, invited a tender for Rs 240 crore. "It needs to be clarified how such a high-value tender was called without govt's written approval," he said. Irregularities occurred throughout the entire process, he alleged. "After a company submitted its tender, they were given the opportunity for revisions and were issued a work order," he said, adding that govt should explain how changes were allowed after opening the tender. "Most contracts were awarded at more than double the benchmark amount set by central govt for installing such pumps. There is a difference ranging from Rs 1-3 lakh in contracts for various solar projects from 2-10 kilowatts. This resulted in a difference of nearly Rs 100 crore in total project cost," he alleged. The approval and corruption involved in causing such a significant difference should be investigated, he added. "This misappropriation was carried out by taking a loan of Rs 175 crore from Nabard. Grading was implemented for companies to ensure error-free project execution. It is understood that contracts were awarded to companies that didn't qualify. Contracts were given to companies without grading at the same amount as the one quoted by the lowest bidder," he said. An investigation into all these irregularities should be ordered by removing Anert CEO, Chennithala said.
