Motorcyclist killed in bear attack on Romanian scenic mountain road
Romania has a brown bear population of 10,000 to 13,000, preliminary results of a multi-year DNA study showed this year, and authorities are struggling to keep residents and tourists in mountain towns safe.
Police and emergency services said in a joint statement that tourists had alerted them to Thursday's attack on the Transfagarasan road in the central county of Arges. The bear had dragged the motorcyclist down a ravine, they said.
There were no details about the motorcyclist's identity.
Almost 30 people have been killed by bears in Romania over the last two decades, the environment ministry has said. Sightings of bears are common and local media regularly report bear attacks on people and livestock.
Last year, Romania's parliament doubled the annual bear kill quota to 481 bear kills per year to control the size of the bear population and to remove animals that have become accustomed to entering cities in search of food.
Wildlife experts have said bear attacks have increased because of human behaviour as the shrinking of the animals' habitats due to construction, logging and climate change.
Many bears are also attracted by rubbish dumps on the outskirts of cities and by discarded food. Officials have not done enough to step up prevention measures, including electric fences and better trash management, wildlife experts said.

Escaped lion attacks woman and 2 children on busy street in Pakistan, video shows
An escaped pet lion chased a woman and two children down a busy street in Pakistan's Lahore, police said Friday, with dramatic footage showing the big cat leaping a wall before pouncing on them. CCTV footage released by the police showed the lion jumping the barrier around its home and pursuing a woman carrying her shopping on Thursday night. The lion jumped on her back, knocking her to the ground, the footage showed. A police report quoted the father as saying the lion then turned to his five-year-old and seven-year-old children, and clawed their arms and faces. All three were taken to hospital but were not in a critical condition. The owners who ran out of the house were "amused to see their lion attack" the passersby, the father added in the report. Police said Friday that they had arrested three men. "The suspects fled from the spot, taking the lion with them. They were arrested within 12 hours of the incident," the office of the Deputy Inspector General Operations in Lahore told AFP. The lion, an 11-month-old male, has been confiscated by police and sent to a wildlife park. Officials at the facility said that the animal appears to be in good health. Keeping exotic animals, especially big cats, as pets has long been seen as a sign of privilege and power in Punjab, the most populous province of the country. In December 2024, an adult lion escaped from its enclosure in another neighborhood of Lahore, terrorizing residents before being shot dead by a security guard. The incident prompted the provincial government to pass new laws regulating the sale, purchase, breeding and ownership of big cats. The law now requires owners to obtain licenses for the animals which are barred from being kept in residential areas. Breeders have to pay a hefty fee for registration, while farms have to be a minimum of 10 acres in size. Big cats are imported and bred across Pakistan, seen as symbols of wealth and power to the elite that own them. Last year, Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz, which rules the government, banned supporters from bringing lions — the symbol of the party — to political rallies. In late December, Pakistani YouTube star Rajab Butt was gifted a lion cub on his wedding day, and authorities quickly took notice when they saw video of the animal on social media. The next month, Butt managed to avoid jail after promising a judge to upload animal rights videos for a year. The attack in Pakistan comes one month after a lion killed a businessman at a luxury lodge in the remote northwest of Namibia. In April, a lion killed a 14-year-old girl outside Kenya's capital in a ranch to the south of Nairobi National Park.

SIU to probe crash that followed attempted highway stop
Ontario's Special Investigations Unit (SIU) will determine whether provincial police did anything wrong when they tried to stop a speeding driver on the Queensway who later crashed into a pole in Ottawa. The police watchdog told CBC News it was called to investigate the Thursday evening crash on Star Top Road east of the capital's downtown. Its investigation so far suggests an Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) officer tried to stop a speeding car on Highway 417 around 6:20 p.m. OPP have jurisdiction over provincial highways in Ottawa, including the Queensway. The driver did not stop, the SIU said, and soon after exited the highway and drove into a pole on Star Top Road. The 35-year-old male driver and a 22-year-old female passenger were seriously injured, the SIU said. As of late Friday morning the driver was still in life-threatening condition. Ottawa police said Thursday evening Star Top Road was closed by a crash north of Innes Road, about six kilometres southeast of Parliament Hill. The SIU examines police responses that result in serious injury to see whether officers broke any laws. It also investigates when officers are involved in a death, use of a firearm or accused of sexual assault.
