S. Korea's prehistoric petroglyphs inscribed on UNESCO World Heritage list

Korea Herald12-07-2025
A set of prehistoric rock carvings in southeastern South Korea has been added to UNESCO's World Heritage list, a South Korean cultural agency announced Saturday.
The decision was made during the 47th session of the UNESCO World Heritage Committee held in Paris, where the "Petroglyphs along the Bangucheon Stream" were formally recognized for their outstanding cultural value.
Carved into vertical cliff faces along the Bangucheon Stream, a tributary of the Taehwa River in Ulsan, some 360 kilometers southeast of Seoul, the petroglyphs depict hunting scenes and animals believed to date back to the prehistoric era.
The inscription had been widely expected after the International Council on Monuments and Sites, an advisory body to UNESCO, recommended the listing in May. A recommendation from ICOMOS is generally seen as preliminary approval for World Heritage status.
Based on the ICOMOS review, the committee said the petroglyphs offer outstanding testimony to a tradition of rock art that spanned some 6,000 years.
It noted that the realistic depictions and distinctive compositions, based on keen observation, highlight the artistic skills of the people who once lived on the Korean Peninsula. The carvings are "masterpieces created through the creativity of prehistoric people," the committee added.
With the latest addition, South Korea now has 17 entries on the UNESCO World Heritage list.
The newly inscribed property comprises two major panels: the Bangudae petroglyphs in Daegok-ri and the Cheonjeon-ri petroglyphs, both considered rare and significant examples of early human artistic expression in East Asia.
The Daegok-ri panel, often referred to as the "Bangudae petroglyphs," is the largest rock art site on the Korean Peninsula, stretching over 30 meters. The carvings are mainly concentrated on a rock face about 4.5 meters high and eight meters wide, including images of sea and land animals, and hunting scenes.
First discovered in 1971 and designated as South Korea's National Treasure No. 285, the panel is known for featuring the world's oldest known depiction of whale hunting.
A 2023 report by the Ulsan metropolitan city said 312 individual engravings were identified on the panel using three-dimensional scanning.
The Cheonjeon-ri petroglyphs are located about 2 kilometers from the Daegok-ri site. It was discovered in 1970, one year ahead of the Daegok-ri site, containing over 620 figures, symbols and drawings engraved along a rock surface -- about 2.7 meters high and 10 meters wide. It is now the country's National Treasure No. 147.
The petroglyphs, however, have faced preservation challenges because they are frequently submerged due to fluctuating water levels at the nearby Sayeon Dam. The dam was constructed in 1965, before the petroglyphs were discovered.
Over the past decade, the carvings have been underwater for an average of 42 days per year.
Government officials and experts have been discussing preservation measures, including adjusting the dam's water levels and building temporary embankments.
Authorities are currently planning to install floodgates at the Sayeon Dam spillway to better control water levels and protect the site.
Frequent submergence was a key reason it took 15 years for the petroglyphs to gain the World Heritage status after being placed on UNESCO's tentative list in 2010.
In its decision, the World Heritage Committee recommended that the South Korean government inform the World Heritage Centre of the progress of the dam-related construction work. (Yonhap)

N. Korea reports Mount Kumgang's addition to UNESCO World Heritage list

North Korea's state media on Wednesday reported the addition of its scenic Mount Kumgang to the UNESCO World Heritage list, three days after the decision was announced. "Our country's celebrated Mount Kumgang has been listed as a world cultural and natural heritage site," the Korean Central News Agency reported. The report came after the UNESCO World Heritage Committee finalized the mountain's addition to the World Heritage list Sunday, following North Korea's application for the status. The KCNA noted that the UNESCO committee recognized the mountain's exceptional natural beauty, significant physiographical features and cultural traditions when it decided to designate the mountain as a World Heritage site. The news agency also described Mount Kumgang as one of the country's famous mountains, highlighting its unique scenic beauty with 12,000 peaks, curious rock formations, impressive waterfalls, pools, crystal-clear waters and colors that change with seasons. The KCNA also cited biodiversity, historic temple sites and cultural legends as "proud" intangible aspects of Mount Kumgang. The same KCNA report was also published by the Rodong Sinmun, the most widely read newspaper in North Korea. North Korea submitted its application for the mountain's inscription on the World Heritage list in 2021, but the review was delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic before resuming this year.

Busan to host 2026 UNESCO World Heritage Committee meeting

48th session of annual UNESCO meeting on world heritage to be held in southern port city next July Busan won the bid to host the 48th UNESCO World Heritage Committee meeting, the Korea Heritage Service said early Wednesday, marking South Korea's first time as host since the meeting was established in 1977. The annual meeting is the largest annual international event on the cultural heritage calendar and will take place in July 2026. The announcement was made during the 47th committee meeting in Paris on Tuesday. Busan was the sole bidder for next year's meeting. The Korea Herald has learned that Vietnam initially intended to enter a bid but later withdrew its decision to participate. "The host country is typically chosen on a rotational basis by continent so that each region gets a fair chance, and next year was expected to be Asia's turn. Since Japan and China have already hosted the event, and South Korea serves as a member of the committee, we actively expressed our desire to do so. Vietnam -- which could have been a competitor -- didn't expect to win, so it chose not to bid," a senior official at the KHS told The Korea Herald. South Korea was elected to the UNESCO World Heritage Committee in November 2023 for a four-year term through 2027, marking the country's fourth such election. The KHS explained that convening a meeting of the 21-member World Heritage Committee where global strategies for artifact management are discussed would elevate Korea's international standing. The event is also expected to bring together government representatives who decide which sites to add to the World Heritage List and how to protect those enlisted. About 3,000 people are expected to attend the two-week event, according to the KHS. Previously, the meeting has been held in several Asian countries, including Cambodia's Phnom Penh and Siem Reap in 2013, China's Suzhou in 2004, Japan's Kyoto in 1998 and Thailand's Phuket in 1994.

Turkmenistan starts Incheon-Ashgabat flights

First Turk direct flight links Korea, central Asia and Europe INCHEON — Turkmenistan started its first-ever direct passenger flight between Incheon and Ashgabat on Monday, marking a milestone in connectivity between Korea and Central Asia. The new route, operating once a week every Monday boosts access to Turkmenistan and eases onward connections to major European cities such as Frankfurt, Milan and Istanbul. With Ashgabat — Turkmenistan's capital and a key Silk Road city — as its hub, the route is a strategic bridge between East and West. Speaking at the launch ceremony, Lee Hack-young, Deputy Speaker of Korea's National Assembly, hailed the route as a historic moment amid deepening Turkmen-Korean ties. 'This new route will serve as a bridge connecting people and cities, towns and communities,' said Lee. 'It will open new prospects for businesses, allow students to share each other's languages and cultures, and invite travelers to experience our rich and unique histories. More than a flight, this route will bring new energy to people-to-people exchanges and contribute to the safety and well-being of our citizens.' Turkmenistan's vice minister of transport, Nazar Kakabayev, thanked Turkmenistan President Serdar Berdimuhamedov for modernizing the county's aviation sector. Kakabayev highlighted recent investments in modern aircraft and aviation infrastructure as part of a broader national transport development strategy. 'We are opening a new chapter in our transport relations,' said Kakabayev Nazar, adding that since April 2023, regular cargo services have significantly enhanced trade, covering over 100,000 kilometers and transporting more than 9,000 metric tons of goods. Among the flight's first passengers was 21-year-old Korean traveler Kwon Gyeong-min. 'It's my first trip to Europe, and being the first passenger feels special and meaningful,' Kwon told The Korea Herald. 'Turkmenistan has many unique tourist attractions, including the 'Derweze gas crater' next to the hellfire site. I believe that with this new route, more routes will be added in the future.' Turkmenistan Ambassador to Korea Begench Durdyyev highlighted the importance of the strategic new route and a series of high-level exchanges. 'Now, following the start of cargo flights in April 2023, the introduction of direct passenger flights between our two countries marks a new beginning,' said Durdyyev. 'This is not the time to relax, but to continue working together with determination to reach new goals,' Durdyyev said, noting bilateral trade had surged by 70 percent in the first quarter of 2025 compared to the same period in 2024. Durdyyev described Turkmenistan as a land of ancient heritage and modern progress, highlighting its UNESCO sites, over 2,000 historic landmarks and Ashgabat as a rising smart city with more than 20 certifications and global awards. sanjaykumar@
