‘Land acquisition issues, pending bills': Bengaluru's ‘Stonehenge' Ejipura flyover unlikely to be completed this year

Taunted as 'Bangalore Stonehenge' and 'monument' on Google Maps, work for the Ejipura flyover in the city does not appear to be headed for completion anytime soon. With uncleared bills, land acquisition issues, and just 50 per cent of the construction complete over eight years, the flyover has been creating more troubles instead of easing congestion in the area.
Meant to connect Kendriya Sadan in Koramangala to the inner Ring Road at Ejipura Junction, the flyover stretches across 2.5 km. Its construction was approved in 2014 and a tender was awarded in 2017 with a 30-month deadline. The project was supposed to be completed in November 2019 but the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) extended the deadline to December 2020 and imposed a penalty for delay. Despite protests from residents and elected representatives, nothing changed.
However, after the Karnataka Congress government came into power, Deputy Chief Minister D K Shivakumar said in August 2023 that an additional Rs 141 crore was required for the project and assured to solve the problem soon. 'It is really unfortunate that the project has been delayed. I will ensure that it is completed,' he said then.
Last month, Transport Minister Ramalinga Reddy said that around 50 per cent of the flyover's work was complete and the rest was underway. 'Initially, there was no need for land acquisition, but the BBMP still went ahead and notified 32 properties. Issues related to one property and the St John's (hospital) property are likely to be resolved in the coming days,' he said, adding that pending bills for the completed works will also be cleared soon.
'In view of the monsoon, I have instructed officials to lay an additional layer of asphalt under the flyover to ensure smooth traffic movement. We expect 90–95 per cent of the work to be completed by December,' he said.
However, an official associated with the project said they are yet to iron out land acquisition issues. 'A portion of land close to St John's Hospital is yet to be acquired. A meeting has to be held with the stakeholders,' the official told The Indian Express.
As of now, 416 segments out of the planned 762 have been cast, and 291 segments have been erected, according to the BBMP.
On the ground, commuters and shopkeepers remain frustrated. While construction is going on, its pace is slow. Mohan Kumar, a traffic police constable stationed at the site, says, 'Peak traffic hours are from 8 am to 11.30 am and from 4.30 pm to 9 pm. It is always congested, and when it rains it becomes worse.'
Muthu, an employee at TVS which is located near the construction site, said part of the flyover now passes in front of his shop, which is a sign of recent progress but beyond that point, there are 'just bare pillars.'
Alim Pasha, manager of the long-standing Sapphire Gift shop in the area, said the situation has affected business, especially for smaller shops. 'Business has been bad, and people barely come. The store is mostly empty. Even if they come, it is mostly during the afternoon when the traffic is moderate. When it rains, the place in front of the shop gets clogged, so there is hardly any access. This flyover is a tragedy,' he said.

Centre clears 140-metre wide ORR for Amaravati

Vijayawada: With the AP govt agreeing to shoulder land acquisition cost, the Centre has given green signal for a taking up 140 metres wide outer ring road (ORR) for Amaravati. Initially, the Centre agreed to give 70-metre wide ORR for Amaravati while chief minister wanted it to expand to 150 metres. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now After deliberations with senior officials, union minister Gadkari agreed for 140-metre wide ORR. T hough named Amaravati ORR, it also serves the major cities of Vijayawada, Guntur and Tenala in the AP capital region. It will complement the Vijayawada by-pass road on the west side of the city. The Vijayawada east by-pass road was cancelled as the ORR on the eastern side passes very close to the proposed by-pass road. The technical appraisal committee (TAC) of union ministry of road transport and highways (Morth) headed by secretary apprised that a highway with a width of 70 metres is sufficient to take up six-lane road project as ORR for Amaravati. The committee felt that the right of way (RoW) with 70 metres would also be sufficient to expand the proposed six-lane to eight lane along with providing service roads on both sides. However, Naidu during the meeting with Gadkari insisted that Amaravati is being developed as one of the modern town in the country and the RoW with 70 metres for ORR would not be sufficient for the city's requirement in the next 50 years. He explained that they have already attracted huge investments to the capital city and it would become difficult to go for big ORR in future. He wanted the Centre to grant the ORR with 150 metre width with a promise to take the additional cost of land acquisition by the state govt. The Centre had already estimated that it would cost Rs.2665 crore for land acquisition for 70-meter ORR and asked the state govt to take the additional financial burden over and above it for taking up the 150-meter ORR. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Subsequently, Gadkari agreed to take up the 140 metre ORR and directed the officials to place the proposals before the competent authority. Naidu wanted to develop the ORR in a prestigious highway with 12-lane along with separate corridors for railway lane, metro corridors. "The ORR going to be the game-changer infrastructure project of Amaravati," said Telugu Desam Parliamentary Party (TDPP) leader Lavu Srikrishnadevarayalu. He said that Centre had also granted several road infrastructure projects connecting Amaravati ORR following the chief minister Chandrababu Naidu's insistence. He explained that Centre had agreed to connect ORR with two spurs to ensure better connectivity with capital city by scrapping the proposal to take up Vijayawada east bypass. The Centre suspended the Vijayawada east bypass as it found to be parallel to the alignment of the proposed ORR. Two separate connecting roads would be developed connecting ORR with the existing NH-16 in Guntur district. While one road would be developed between Chinakakani and Tenali and other would be taken up near Narakoduru on the outskirts of Guntur city.

JP Nadda meets former Himachal CM Prem Kumar Dhumal

Hamirpur (Himachal Pradesh) [India], July 5 (ANI): Union Minister and BJP president JP Nadda visited senior party leader and former Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Prem Kumar Dhumal at his residence in Samirpur on Friday. It was a courtesy visit. 'During my stay in Himachal Pradesh today, I paid a courtesy visit to senior BJP leader and former Chief Minister Shri Prem Kumar Dhumal ji at his residence in Samirpur and enquired about his well-being,' Nadda said in a post on X. BJP's newly appointed state chief Rajeev Bindal was also present. Nadda took a dig at the Congress-led state government on Wednesday over its handling of disaster relief funds. 'Between 2023 and 2025, the Central Government allocated Rs 1,736 crore to the State Disaster Response Fund (SDRF), Rs 1,071 crore through the National Disaster Response Fund (NDRF), and Rs 339 crore to the State Disaster Mitigation Fund for Himachal Pradesh as relief funds. This demonstrates that under Prime Minister Modi's leadership, the Government of India stands firmly with the state government in times of need, not just in words but in action.' 'Out of the Rs 360.11 crore allocated, only Rs 78 crore has been utilised, which is just 21.7 per cent of the total amount. I have cautioned the state government that they have one year to effectively utilise these funds. Nevertheless, the Central Government and Prime Minister Modi remain steadfast in their support for Himachal Pradesh.' Expressing condolences for the lives lost in cloudbursts and flash floods, Nadda expressed BJP's solidarity with the affected families. 'I express my deepest condolences to those who lost their lives in the cloudburst and flash floods. The BJP stands with the families who have lost their loved ones. We are assisting in the ongoing rescue operations in the affected areas. Whenever Himachal Pradesh has been affected by any disaster, Prime Minister Modi has always stood with Himachal Pradesh,' he said. (ANI)
