Rail fare hike from July 1; AC and sleeper classes to cost more

The Ministry of Railways on Monday notified fare hikes for passengers—raising air-conditioned coach fares by 2 paisa per kilometre, along with other modest increases across classes—which will come into effect from Tuesday.
According to the circular, there will be no hike in fares for trains on the suburban rail network. Moreover, monthly season tickets will continue to cost the same.
Fares for passengers travelling in second class on ordinary (non-mail or express) trains will remain unchanged for distances up to 500 kilometres. Beyond this, a hike of half a paisa per kilometre will be applicable.
Similarly, sleeper class and first and second class tickets on mail and express trains will cost 1 paisa per kilometre more.
Through these hikes, the Railways is expected to earn approximately ₹700 crore more in the current financial year and around ₹1,300 crore in a full financial year, based on passenger kilometre estimates provided in Union Budget documents.
For tickets already issued at pre-revised rates, the revised fares will not apply. The ministry said the fare difference for journeys on or after 1 July on such tickets will not be shown in the reservation chart.
This comes in response to an earlier practice where ticket collectors would charge passengers the differential fare for tickets booked prior to the effective date.
'Existing basic fare of train services like Tejas Rajdhani, Rajdhani, Shatabdi, Duronto, Vande Bharat, Humsafar, Amrit Bharat, Tejas, Mahamana, Gatimaan, Antyodaya, Garib Rath, Jan Shatabdi, Yuva Express, ordinary services (non-suburban), Anubhuti coach and AC Vistadome coach etc. has been revised to the extent of the above proposed increase in class-wise basic fare,' the circular said.
In the Union Budget presented in February, projected revenue from the passenger segment was pegged at ₹92,800 crore, up 11 per cent from ₹82,000 crore in the revised estimates for FY25. Specifically, revenue from AC three-tier class is expected to rise to ₹37,115 crore in the current financial year, up 23 per cent from FY25 revised estimates.

Why did shares of Mukesh Ambani's Reliance-owned Alok Industries zoom 15%? Key reasons explained

Textile stocks in focus: While the Indian stock market continued to trade in a narrow range on Tuesday, July 8, amid uncertainty over the India–US trade deal and the resurfacing of global trade tensions, textile stocks managed to attract attention, with most of them trading higher. Alok Industries, one of the leading textile manufacturers, saw its share price soar 15.30% to hit a 7-month high of ₹ 23.20, as optimism around the sector improved on expectations that the latest tariffs on Bangladesh could create opportunities for India to expand its textile exports to Western countries. On Monday, Trump released the first in a series of tariff warning letters, just two days before agreements are due on countries facing his April 2 so-called reciprocal levies. The new rates include 25% duties on goods from Japan, South Korea, and Malaysia; 32% on Indonesia; 35% on Bangladesh; 36% on Thailand and Cambodia; and 40% on Laos and Myanmar. While the 35% tariffs on Bangladesh—whose economy is heavily dependent on textile manufacturing—are lower than the 36% that Trump announced earlier in April, experts suggest that even 35% tariffs on the neighboring country may influence American buyers to turn to India, which is currently well-positioned from domestic policy tailwinds. Meanwhile, the long trade talks between India and the US are expected to finalize anytime soon, which could potentially benefit some of the export-sensitive sectors, including textiles. Earlier, in May, India and the United Kingdom signed a landmark Free Trade Agreement (FTA), which aims to increase bilateral trade by £25.5 billion ($34 billion) by 2040 through liberal market access and eased trade restrictions, with the textile sector seeing benefits from this pact. India is ranked among the top textile-exporting countries globally, with a share of approximately 4% of global textiles and apparel exports. The major export destinations for India in this segment are the United States (US), the European Union (EU), and the United Kingdom (UK), accounting for around 53% of total textile and apparel exports in FY 2023–24. The Indian government has been increasing its focus on the textile sector, offering incentives and reforms to strengthen domestic manufacturing. In the Union Budget 2025–2026, the Indian government announced a five-year mission aimed at enhancing the productivity and sustainability of cotton farming. Bharat Bandh on July 9: what will be open and what's affected?

More than 25 crore workers engaged in sectors ranging from banking and insurance to postal services, coal mining, highway construction, and others are expected to go on a nationwide general strike on Wednesday (July 9), potentially disrupting services across the country. Why is there a Bharat Bandh tomorrow? A forum of 10 central trade unions and their associates has called for a general strike or 'Bharat Bandh' to 'oppose the anti-worker, anti-farmer and anti-national pro-corporate policies of the government'. In a statement, the forum has called for making 'the nationwide general strike a grand success', and said preparations have been taken up in earnest by unions in all sectors of formal and informal/unorganised economy. What's affected due to the Bharat Bandh? 1. Banking services 2. Postal services 3. Coal mining and factories 4. State transport services 5. Public sector units and government departments 'Farmers and rural workers will also join the protest across the country,' said Amarjeet Kaur from All India Trade Union Congress. What's open on Bharat Bandh? 1. Schools and colleges 2. Private offices As of now, there is no official announcement about a nationwide railway strike, but passengers may expect delays in train services or disruptions due to the protests. Why are workers on strike, and what are the concerns raised by the forum? The forum said that the government has not been conducting the annual labour conference for the last 10 years and continues to take decisions in contravention to the interest of labour force, attempting to impose four labour codes to weaken collective bargaining, to cripple unions' activities and to favour employers in the name of 'ease of doing business'. The forum also alleged that the economic policies are resulting into more unemployment, rising prices of essential commodities, depression in wages, cut in social sector spending in education, health, basic civic amenities, and all these are leading to more inequalities and miseries for poor, people of lower income group as well as the middle class. It also alleged that in government departments, instead of providing regular appointments to the youth, the policy to recruit those who retired, as witnessed in Railways, NMDC Ltd, steel sector, and teaching cadres, is damaging to the growth of the country where 65 per cent population is below the age of 35 years and the number of unemployed is maximum among those in the age group of 20 to 25 years.
