
New weekly injection to offer steady Parkinson's medication, cut need for daily pills
Frequent dosing is a burden, especially for elderly patients or those with swallowing difficulties, leading to inconsistent medication levels, more side effects, and reduced effectiveness.
To address this, the team from the University of South Australia (UniSA) developed a long-acting injectable formulation that delivers a steady dose of levodopa and carbidopa -- two key medications for Parkinson's -- over an entire week.
The biodegradable formulation is injected under the skin or into muscle tissue, where it gradually releases the medication over seven days, noted the researchers in the paper published in the journal Drug Delivery and Translational Research.
The newly developed injectable could significantly improve treatment outcomes and patient adherence, said lead researcher Professor Sanjay Garg, from UniSA's Center for Pharmaceutical Innovation.
"Our goal was to create a formulation that simplifies treatment, improves patient compliance, and maintains consistent therapeutic levels of medication. This weekly injection could be a game-changer for Parkinson's care," Garg said.
"Levodopa is the gold-standard therapy for Parkinson's, but its short lifespan means it must be taken several times a day."
The injectable gel combines a US FDA-approved biodegradable polymer, PLGA, with Eudragit L-100, a pH-sensitive polymer, to achieve a controlled and sustained drug release.
The team noted that the release of both levodopa and carbidopa steadily over a week could help maintain consistent plasma levels and reduce the risks associated with fluctuating drug concentrations.
Extensive lab tests confirmed the system's effectiveness and safety. More than 90 per cent of the levodopa dose and more than 81 per cent of the carbidopa dose were released over seven days.
Notably, the implant degraded by over 80 per cent within a week and showed no significant toxicity in cell viability tests.
In addition, the formulation can be easily administered through a fine 22-gauge needle, minimising discomfort and eliminating the need for surgical implantation.
Garg said the technology could also be adapted for other chronic conditions such as cancer, diabetes, neurodegenerative disorders, pain management, and chronic infections that require long-term drug delivery.

1 2 Chandigarh: The PGI witnessed another inspiring moment as the family of a young engineering student turned personal tragedy into hope for others by donating his vital organs. Navneet Singh, 23, a resident of Gangath village, Nurpur, Kangra, suffered a severe head injury after accidentally falling from a rooftop on July 3. Despite receiving intensive medical care at PGI, he was declared brain dead on July 11. Amidst their grief, Navneet's father, Janak Singh, made the courageous decision to donate his son's organs. "Deciding to donate my son's organs was the hardest choice we have ever faced. But knowing that his organs would give others a chance to live has brought us some comfort in our sorrow. We are proud that Navneet's legacy will continue through these lives," he said. Following the family's consent, PGI's transplant teams retrieved Navneet's heart, kidneys, and pancreas. To ensure timely transport of the donor heart, a dedicated green corridor was created from PGI to Chandigarh International Airport, Mohali, and onward to New Delhi. The heart was successfully transplanted into a 26-year-old patient admitted at RML Hospital. At PGI, the department of renal transplant surgery, led by Prof Ashish Sharma, performed a simultaneous kidney-pancreas transplant on one recipient. This marked PGI's 63rd pancreas transplant — the highest number of such procedures performed by any institution across Indian states and union territories — curing the patient of Type I diabetes. The second kidney was transplanted into another patient suffering from end-stage renal failure and undergoing long-term dialysis.

Air quality in Mumbai's Deonar and Sion worse than coastal cities of Chennai and Kolkata in Jan-June 2025, finds national study on air pollution
Mumbai: In the first six months of 2025, Mumbai, as a whole, reported average toxic PM2.5 levels in the air below the national standard, but several of its areas, including Deonar, Sion, Kandivli East, and Bandra-Kurla Complex, saw higher pollution compared to other coastal cities like Chennai, Kolkata, Vijayawada, and Puducherry. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now This highlights the need for strict enforcement of hotspot-based measures to effectively reduce PM2.5 concentrations, stated a latest national report on air pollution, which draws on data from Continuous Ambient Air Quality Monitoring Stations (CAAQMS) in 239 cities. The PM2.5 particles in air are considered carcinogenic and can be absorbed in blood upon breathing. The Centre for Research on Energy and Clean Air (CREA) has released its half-yearly analysis of air quality across India for January to June 2025, revealing a persistent and widespread challenge in meeting both national and international air quality standards. Deonar stands out as one of the most polluted monitoring sites among all the listed coastal locations, with other Mumbai areas, such as Sion, Kandivli East, Bandra-Kurla Complex, Borivli East, Worli, Mazgaon, Shivaji Nagar, Sewri, and Kurla, also registering PM2.5 levels above or equal to NAAQS (national ambient air quality standards) which is 40 μg/m³ (micrograms per cubic metre). "These figures place Mumbai's air quality in a more concerning bracket, especially when compared to many sites in Chennai and Puducherry, where the PM2.5 concentrations are generally lower," the study stated. According to the report, the compliance assessment shows that PM2.5 data was available for over 80% of days in 239 cities with CAAQMS. Among these, 122 cities exceeded India's annual National Ambient NAAQS of 40 μg/m3, while 117 cities remained below this threshold. However, all 239 cities surpassed the much stricter World Health Organization's (WHO) annual standard of 5 μg/m3. This widespread exceedance indicates that air pollution continues to pose a significant public health risk even in cities that are technically 'compliant' with Indian standards, the report stated further. In contrast, Chennai's monitoring stations, particularly those in residential and peripheral areas, often report much cleaner air. Puducherry and Vijayawada show even lower PM2.5 averages, indicating better air quality. This comparison highlights that Mumbai, despite its coastal location, faces significant air pollution challenges, making it one of the more polluted coastal cities in India during the first half of the year," said CREA's analyst and researcher Manoj Kumar. "Addressing the air quality crisis in any Indian city requires a multi-sectoral approach. Fragmented or seasonal measures are not enough. Urgent steps are needed to update national standards, expand NCAP coverage to gaseous pollutants, and enforce mitigation measures for all polluting sources to safeguard public health throughout the year," added Kumar

Research centre receives 2 patents
Mangaluru: Fr Muller's Research Centre has successfully published its first two patents, marking a significant milestone in its innovation journey. The patents include a low-tech auscultatory device designed to enhance realism in medical simulation scenarios and provide cost-effective training solutions, and a 3D-printed biodegradable multipurpose toe separator developed for dermatological applications. Dr Ramesh Bhat M, research director at the centre, said that a low-cost innovation in simulation-based auscultation training was developed by Dr Reena Wilma Frank, Pradeep D'Souza, Sandra Saldanha, and Dr Lulu Sherif, faculty members of Father Muller Charitable Institutions. The innovators are from nursing, medical, and simulation backgrounds. Innovation in derma care In the field of derma care, the 3D-Printed Biodegradable Multipurpose Toe Separator for Dermatological Applications was applied for patent and published by Dr Ramesh Bhat and his team from Fr Muller Medical College and Srinivas University Institute of Engineering and Technology, Mukka. The team includes Dr Priya Anusha D'Souza, a dermatologist and former student of Fr Muller Medical College, and Ajay Kaushik Noronha, Assistant Professor, Department of MBA at SUIET, Mukka. The device maintains an open, ventilated interdigital space, which is critical for faster healing and infection prevention. Anatomically tailored for the Indian population, it offers orthopaedic comfort, durability, and ease of use. This invention helps in managing common yet often chronic foot conditions, particularly in humid climates and at-risk groups such as diabetic patients. "So far, we have used this toe separator on 20 patients with good results," he said.
