The horror incident occurred on the River Tagus off the town of Oeiras in the western part of Lisbon's metropolitan area.
The unnamed Brit was tracked down and arrested before being remanded in custody pending an ongoing criminal investigation after being hauled before a judge.
He is continuing to be probed on suspicion of domestic violence and attempted homicide.
The woman, who has been described as a foreigner and is also thought to be a Brit - although police haven't released her nationality - was hospitalised after the incident.
Her current condition is not known.
Public prosecutors told local press the couple had started dating around a year ago and had lived together in the yacht owned by the man who has been arrested since December last year.
One told Portuguese newspaper Correio da Manha the Brit skipper allegedly 'threw his victim into the river during a row' before abandoning the scene on his yacht 'knowing she couldn't swim".
Maritime Police intercepted the suspect before he was formally arrested by officers from Portugal's PSP police force.
The arrest is understood to have happened hours after the May 30 incident.
The yacht has been seized by investigators.
Portuguese police could not be reached early this morning for a formal comment.
The Tagus is the longest river in the Iberian peninsula.
It rises in the Sierra de Albarracin in eastern Spain, about 90 miles from the Mediterranean coast.
It flows westward across Spain and Portugal for 626 miles to empty into the Atlantic Ocean near Lisbon.

BREAKING NEWS Major development in search for Julian Story's missing remains

The search for Julian Story's missing remains will resume after fresh evidence led detectives to new areas of interest in a coastal town. The South Australian man was allegedly killed by his partner, former Beauty and the Geek contestant Tamika Chesser, at their home in Port Lincoln on June 17. Major crime detectives are to team up with local police and search fresh locations in Port Lincoln for the 39-year-old's allegedly decapitated head. Ms Tesser allegedly killed him about midnight on June 17 before setting fire to his body two days later. 'We know that after his alleged murder, Julian's body was dismembered and while I won't provide any further detail about that at this time, I can tragically say that we have not recovered the head of Julian Story,' Superintendent Fielke previously said. SES volunteers, police divers and local patrols searched for days for Mr Story's remains in parks, bushland and oceans surrounding Port Lincoln. 'New search areas have been identified and by undertaking these renewed searches, we hope to find Julian's missing remains, which will give comfort to his family and allow them to peacefully lay him to rest,' Det Supt Fielke said on Tuesday. 'Police have reviewed a significant amount of CCTV footage since the incident which has provided a number of investigational leads. We also appreciate the ongoing assistance the community of Port Lincoln has provided throughout the investigation.' Chesser was allegedly discovered at the Port Lincoln apartment in an unresponsive state. She was arrested and taken to a psychiatric facility. Police were alerted to the alleged killing when Mr Story and Chesser's neighbours noticed a fire at the home. One neighbour expressed concern and entered the unit to throw water on what he believed to be a pile of smouldering rags, which were allegedly Mr Story's headless remains. Police later obtained and released CCTV images and video which showed Chesser walking three dogs and carrying a bag while wearing a Hijab-style head covering. Detective Superintendent Fielke said it was 'crucial' Mr Story's head was returned to his family so they could hold a funeral. A spokesperson for Mr Story's family thanked police and first responders for their 'compassion and professionalism during this devastating time'.

Brazil court freezes Bolsonaro son's assets as ex-president threatened with arrest over social media use

A Brazilian supreme court justice has ordered the freezing of the accounts and assets of former president Jair Bolsonaro's third son, Eduardo Bolsonaro, the latter said announced social media. Eduardo, a Brazilian congressman who has been in Washington to drum up support for his father, said on X on Monday the decision was 'another arbitrary' decision by Justice Alexandre de Moraes. CNN Brasil reported that Moraes's confidential decision was issued on Saturday as part of an investigation into Eduardo Bolsonaro's conduct in the US. Donald Trump has tied the imposition of steep tariffs on Brazilian goods to what the US president calls a 'witch-hunt' against the former Brazilian president. A decision showed on Monday evening that Moraes – who oversees the case in which Bolsonaro is accused of plotting a coup – also threatened to order Bolsonaro's arrest unless his lawyers explained within 24 hours why he breached restrictions on his use of social media. Bolsonaro's lawyers did not immediately respond to a request for comment outside normal business hours. Moraes on Friday ordered Bolsonaro to wear an ankle bracelet and banned him from using social media, among other measures – which were later upheld by a court panel – over allegations he courted Trump's interference. Bolsonaro described Moraes' decision to prohibit his social media use as 'cowardice', telling Reuters he intended to continue engaging with the press to ensure his voice was heard. On Monday, Moraes said Bolsonaro breached the supreme court order when speaking with journalists earlier in the day, after a meeting with allies in the Brazilian Congress. The moment – which marked the first time Bolsonaro publicly showed his ankle bracelet – came hours after Moraes issued a clarification of Friday's ruling, which stated that Bolsonaro's use of social media included use through third parties. Moraes, in his decision, attached screenshots of several posts on social media – including on news outlets – that showed Bolsonaro 'displaying the electronic monitoring device, delivering a speech to be displayed on digital platforms'. The US secretary of state, Marco Rubio, last week called Moraes' court orders a 'political witch-hunt', responding on Friday with immediate visa revocations for 'Moraes and his allies on the court, as well as their immediate family members.' The court's crackdown on Bolsonaro adds to evidence that Trump's tactics are backfiring in Brazil, compounding trouble for his ideological ally and rallying public support behind the defiant leftist government. Hours before summoning Bolsonaro's lawyers, Moraes had issued a ruling that raised questions about whether the rightwing leader was allowed to talk to journalists. 'Obviously, the broadcasting, re-broadcasting or dissemination of audio, video or transcripts of interviews on any third-party social media platform is prohibited,' the judge said in the clarification of Friday's ruling. The measure sparked debate in Brazil regarding the ruling's range. Bolsonaro on Monday cancelled an interview with a news outlet that would have been broadcast live on social media. The supreme court declined to comment or elaborate on the specifics of that decision. A spokesperson for Bolsonaro also declined to comment, but the former president has always denied any wrongdoing.

Man, 18, charged with murder over death of 63-year-old man in Ipswich

An 18-year-old man has been charged with murder over the death of a 63-year-old man in Ipswich. Suffolk Police said officers were called to an address in Hawthorn Drive, Ipswich, shortly before 6pm on January 1, where William McNicholl, known as Billy, was found dead inside the property. The force said results from a Home Office post-mortem examination indicated the cause of Mr McNicholl's death as head injuries and a stab wound to the right shoulder. A murder inquiry into Mr McNicholl's death was led by Suffolk Constabulary's Major Investigation Team. On January 22, a 17-year-old boy was arrested on suspicion of murder before being bailed with conditions. Police said the man, now 18, was re-arrested on Monday on suspicion of murder and taken to Martlesham Police Investigation Centre (PIC) for questioning. Jake McMillan, most recently of Banbury Road, Hackney in London, but formerly of Ipswich, has subsequently been charged with murder and also being concerned in the supply of cannabis. McMillan has been remanded in custody and is due to appear at Ipswich Magistrates' Court on Tuesday. Police said three other people were arrested on April 1 as part of the investigation. A 17-year-old boy, 18-year-old man and 41-year-old man were arrested on suspicion of assisting an offender and being concerned in the supply of Class A and B drugs. They were taken to Martlesham PIC for questioning and were bailed to return to police on October 1. A woman in her 50s, who was previously arrested on suspicion of murder before being released on bail, will face no further action.
