J&K: Two suspected militants killed while trying to infiltrate across LoC
The Army said that a security operation codenamed 'Operation Shivshakti' was launched after receiving 'synchronised' intelligence inputs from its own units and the Jammu and Kashmir Police about the movement of militants in the area.
The operation was still underway, the Army said.
This came two days after three militants were killed in Operation Mahadev, a joint security operation in the Lidwas meadows of Srinagar's Dara area on Monday.
On Tuesday, Union Home Minister Amit Shah told Parliament that the three militants neutralised in Operation Mahadev were terrorists involved in the Pahalgam terror attack.
During a discussion on Operation Sindoor in the Lok Sabha, Shah said the Indian Army, Jammu and Kashmir Police and the Central Reserve Police Force had jointly carried out the operation.
The three men identified as Suleiman Shah, Afghan and Jibran, were members of the Lashkar-e-Taiba terror group.
The Union home minister said that the men were identified as having been involved in the Pahalgam attack by those who had provided them shelter.
The terror attack at Baisaran near Pahalgam town in Jammu and Kashmir on April 22 left 26 persons dead and 16 injured. The terrorists targeted tourists after asking their names to ascertain their religion, the police said. All but three of those killed were Hindu.

With Shah's counsel, Bengal BJP gets down to drawing Assembly poll roadmap
Allaying concerns over Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls, countering the Trinamool Congress's (TMC) narrative on language and culture, and an emphasis on women's security and other issues will be the BJP's focus as it heads towards the crucial Assembly elections in West Bengal next year. West Bengal BJP president Samik Bhattacharya, the party's national general secretary in charge of the state, Sunil Bansal, and other senior leaders met Union Home Minister Amit Shah in Delhi on Monday to apprise him of the situation in the state at the moment and discuss the party's poll strategy. Shah is learnt to have instructed the state unit to prepare for the SIR, an exercise already underway in Bihar amid the Opposition's protests that it will lead to disenfranchisement of millions. West Bengal Chief Minister and TMC chairperson Mamata Banerjee has said she will not allow the Election Commission (EC) to conduct the voter verification drive. The TMC has referred to the SIR as 'silent intensive rigging' and linked it to the proposed National Register of Citizens (NRC). The party's Krishnanagar MP Mahua Moitra is among those who have moved the Supreme Court challenging the SIR. The BJP has not denied the benefit of an SIR, saying it will weed out ineligible voters from the rolls. It has accused the TMC of taking advantage of an inflated voter list over the years. At the meeting, it was discussed that the party should ensure a significant presence of its workers for political messaging at the booth level when the SIR is conducted. It is learnt that Shah advised the state leadership to take steps to ensure there is no panic over the exercise. 'Stop Trinamool's misinformation' The Home Minister is also learnt to have emphasised that the state unit should 'clearly communicate' to people that the BJP is against infiltration and not Bangla or Bengalis. With Bangla speakers getting detained in several BJP-ruled states on suspicion of being undocumented Bangladeshi immigrants, the TMC has accused the party of linguistic profiling. On July 27, Mamata Banerjee launched a statewide 'Bhasha Andolon (language movement)' to protest against the alleged harassment. The BJP has since shot back at the CM, accusing her of 'manufacturing issues' ahead of the Assembly polls that are less than a year away. Samik Bhattacharya has alleged that Mamata is more interested in 'protecting Bangla-speaking infiltrators from Bangladesh'. At the meeting, the BJP leaders discussed the TMC-fuelled narrative that portrays the party as one of 'outsiders', something that has damaged the party in previous elections. To stop this misinformation from spreading, state BJP leaders had been asked to organise public outreach programmes, sources said A senior leader who attended the meeting said it was agreed that women-related issues should be at the centre of the party's campaign. The consensus was that there should be a focus on women's safety in the wake of the R G Kar rape-murder case and the recent case of alleged rape at a law college in Kolkata in which a member of the TMC's student wing is the main accused. Another BJP functionary said the party would also focus on the Central government's initiatives for the Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe communities. 'An all-out effort must be made to win the 2026 elections in Bengal. The party is working on it. We have been told that we must communicate how much the BJP has worked for the SC/ST communities,' said the leader. The meeting with Shah came just days after the Bengal BJP started the process to form 43 organisational district committees. In March, the party had announced the names of 39 district presidents. On July 18, Prime Minister Narendra Modi set the tone for the party's election campaign in his address at a massive rally in Durgapur in Paschim Bardhaman district. After launching several development projects, Modi lashed out at the TMC government and accused it of enabling 'infiltration' and hindering the state's development through corruption and violence. 'The TMC is actively helping infiltrators. I want to say this very clearly that those who are not the citizens of India and have entered illegally will be dealt with fairness in accordance with the Constitution.' Since recording its best-ever electoral performance in Bengal in the 2019 Lok Sabha election — winning 18 of 42parliamentary seats — the BJP has struggled to provide a sustained challenge to the TMC. In 2021, though it increased its tally to 77 seats, only five years after opening its account in the 294-member Assembly, organisational reverses and infighting set it back, and in the Lok Sabha elections last year its tally dropped to 12. The party has been hamstrung by internal feuds over the years and is attempting to overcome these challenges to effect a turnaround under Bhattacharya.

NSUI demands student union polls: Rajasthan Congress leaders face water cannons, over 30 detained
National Students' Union of India (NSUI) workers and senior Congress leaders, including AICC general secretary Sachin Pilot, on Monday staged a protest in Jaipur demanding the immediate restoration of student union elections. The Rajasthan Police used water cannons to disperse the protesters when, after a demonstration, tried to breach police barricades to march towards the chief minister's residence in Civil Lines area. A mild scuffle broke out between the police and NSUI workers, after which over 30 party leaders and workers, including Ladnun MLA Mukesh Bhakar and NSUI state president Vinod Jakhar, were detained. Speaking to the media after the protest, Pilot accused the BJP government in the state led by Chief Minister Bhajan Lal Sharma of deliberately delaying various elections, including panchayat and urban body polls. He said the state government was working in a dictatorial manner, taking inspiration from Delhi. 'This is a double-engine government that is doing nothing. When elections arrive, they raise issues of Hindu-Muslim, temple-mosque and try to polarise voters. If people continue to vote based on religion and caste, this will happen,' he said. 'They are scared to lose, hence they are adopting tactics to crush the voice of students,' he said. Pilot claimed that students across the state are seeking elections and criticised the BJP for having 'no valid reason' to halt the process. Responding to the allegations, Deputy CM Prem Chand Bairwa said it was the previous Congress government under Ashok Gehlot that had stopped the student union elections. Students should be questioning Ashok Gehlot about why elections weren't held during his tenure. We are committed to the welfare of students,' Bairwa stated.

Modi tells NDA meet Oppn scored self-goal on Sindoor
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday hit out at opposition parties while addressing lawmakers from the National Democratic Alliance, saying that by criticising the government on Operation Sindoor they forced a discussion on an issue that was 'his turf'. Modi took potshots at Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, without naming him. 'He said there is an opposition leader prone to making childish comments. (ANI) A resolution saluting the valour of the armed forces and hailing the Prime Minister's 'unwavering resolve, visionary statesmanship and resolute command' was passed at the meeting. According to people privy to the details, the PM while speaking about Operation Sindoor, India's military strikes against terror camps in Pakistan and PoK (Pakistan Occupied Kashmir), said the Opposition scored a self goal by seeking a discussion on the issue in Parliament. 'The PM said the Opposition must be ruing its decision to force a discussion… he said he was standing there to defend the country and even the gods gave their support to him,' said a party leader, speaking on condition of anonymity. A special discussion on the operation took place in both Houses of Parliament, with the PM speaking on the issue in the Lok Sabha on July 29. In the Rajya Sabha, the Opposition walked out in protest against the PM's absence when the government fielded Union home minister Amit Shah to speak on the issue. 'The PM said had these people not come together, they (Congress) would have continued their misrule… His statement was an endorsement of the NDA's cohesion and he said the parties should work together, letting the stronger ally to lead in their respective regions,' said the second leader. On Rahul Gandhi making comments about the territorial integrity of the country, the PM said no one can get away with making irresponsible comments about the security of the country. 'He spoke about the statements made by Gandhi about the territorial issues and security of the country,' Rijiju said. The MPs gave a standing ovation to the PM for his leadership and political will to deal with terrorism and greeted him with slogans of Har Har Mahadev. The resolution passed at the meeting saluted 'the unmatched courage and unwavering commitment of our armed forces, who showed heroic valour during Operation Sindoor and Operation Mahadev.' 'Their courage highlights their unflinching devotion to protecting our nation. We pay our deepest condolences and respects to those who lost their lives in the Pahalgam terror attack,' the resolution said. The lawmakers from the BJP and its allies, the TDP, the JDU and other parties also felicitated the 'exceptional leadership' displayed by Prime Minister Modi. 'His unwavering resolve, visionary statesmanship and resolute command have not only steered the nation with purpose but also ignited a renewed spirit of unity and pride in the hearts of all Indians,' it said. Operation Sindoor was executed in response to April 22 terror attack in Pahalgam, which India said was perpetrated by Pakistan-based terrorist group, The Resistance Front (TRF), a front and proxy of the Lashkar-e-Taiba. The attack left 26 dead. 'If there is a terrorist attack on India, a fitting reply will be given. We will give a befitting response on our terms only… Secondly, India will not tolerate any nuclear blackmail. India will strike precisely and decisively at the terrorist hideouts developing under the cover of nuclear blackmail…Thirdly, we will not differentiate between the government sponsoring terrorism and the masterminds of terrorism,' the resolution noted, highlighting the new normal in dealing with the issue. A reference was also made to the government's focus on indigenisation of defence capabilities and to the diplomatic outreach that was launched after the operation.
