The secret Penge shopping spot every thrift lover should know about

When most people think of shopping in London, they picture the designer stores on Oxford Street or the spoilt-for-choice experience of Westfield. But just a short train ride from central London is Penge – a place offering something far more exciting, more unique, and much more affordable: charity shops. Penge might not be the first place that springs to mind for retail therapy, but this south east London suburb is home to some serious second-hand gems. READ MORE: I spent an afternoon in Penge to see if it's really one of the UK's coolest places Lined up along the high street like a thrifty dream team, Barnardo's, St Christopher's, British Heart Foundation, and more give shoppers the chance to discover one-of-a-kind pieces, support great causes, and shop sustainably. My first stop was Barnardo's, where I instantly spotted a super cute black halter neck top for just £3 – a total steal that I already know will be my summer wardrobe staple. The shop is neatly laid out, with rails full of pre-loved treasures, and the staff are friendly and welcoming, creating a relaxed space to browse. Bernardo's (Image: Newsquest) Just a few doors down, I stepped into the British Heart Foundation (BHF) shop, which happened to be in the middle of a massive sale. From second-hand clothes and shoes to books, toys, and homeware, this place is a budget shopper's paradise. Whether you're furnishing your home for less or hunting for a new outfit, BHF has something for everyone. British Heart Foundation (BHF) (Image: Newsquest) A short stroll away is one of Penge's lesser known but equally important spots: the Alex TLC Charity Shop, located right on Penge High Street, directly opposite Sainsbury's. This was the first shop opened by the charity back in 2006, and it's still going strong today. The location is super convenient – nestled between Penge West and Clock House stations, and just around the corner from Kent House. Inside the BHF store (Image: Newsquest) Alex TLC supports individuals affected by leukodystrophy, a rare neurological condition – so every purchase here directly contributes to helping families facing a tough diagnosis. Other must-visit charity stops include St Christopher's, Sense, and Living Well – each offering a unique mix of donations, from vintage blouses and quirky mugs to vinyl records and retro furniture. In one shop, I found the most gorgeous pair of stiletto heels with a shiny bow perched perfectly on top – priced at just £6. St Christopher's (Image: Newsquest) Sadly (for me), they weren't my size, but a future shopper is in for a treat. If you love a good rummage, you could easily spend a whole afternoon exploring Penge's charity shop scene – discovering little treasures you didn't even know you needed. What makes shopping in Penge so special isn't just the bargains – although they're undeniably brilliant – but the sense of community. Every purchase supports a cause, every donation gives something a second life, and every visit connects you with a unique item you simply won't find anywhere else.

A Bright Baked Salmon, Satisfying Cold Tofu and Better Rice Krispies Treats

Hello, Julia here, filling in today for Sam! This is the time of year to be delightfully reminded that packaged cherry tomatoes, no matter how sweet or colorful they are, don't taste like fresh, locally grown ones. (Or backyard ones! In most parts of the country, it's not too late for planting — and a single vine can produce hundreds of tomatoes.) We have so many ways to use them, including our forever-viral one-pot spaghetti (equally good hot, or at room temp) and this new salmon recipe from Noor Murad. It's as easy as a sheet-pan dinner but as savory as a tagine, thanks to the subtle addition of soy sauce to the marinade. Featured Recipe View Recipe → Last week, I added cherry tomatoes to Yasmin Fahr's seared spicy shrimp and chickpea salad, a quick summer meal that's protein-rich and great at room temperature. I'm currently using up the chickpeas in my pantry and stocking up on white beans; their creamy texture is so nice in a chilled salad like Melissa Clark's quick one of beans tossed in a garlicky vinaigrette and studded with Parmesan croutons. Fastest of all hot-night dinners is Japanese hiyayakko, the dish that taught me to love plain tofu. Its contrasts are magically satisfying: cool, creamy tofu; a sharp, salty dressing; and crisp, juicy fresh herbs. The brilliant Hetty Lui McKinnon provides some versatile variations. Soon it will be time for my annual batch of jerk chicken, which takes some planning and provisioning but pays off in smoky-sweet heat. I make a triple recipe, and cook both chicken parts and pork belly chunks. It's easy to order Jamaican pimento wood online, but even if you don't use the wood, the ground allspice in the marinade will provide fragrance and flavor. To finish: A three-ingredient dessert like my Rice Krispies treats made with brown butter, adapted from a recipe by Colin Alevras, is the perfect summer ending. You'll find that recipe (and many others) in our collection of no-bake desserts. Dive in!
