Lost $200m in startup bust to alcohol addiction: Ex-AFL Joel Macdonald star reflects upon his downfall and how he fought back

Time of India05-06-2025
Joel Macdonald
, former
Australian Football League
(AFL) star, has revealed the reason behind him turning to
magic mushrooms
after he lost $200million after the collapse of his global tech business. MacDonald, 40, who played for the Brisbane Lions and Melbourne Demons, retired in 2013 after which he turned his attention to
GetSwift
, his start-up in 2017.
Following the launch of his startup, MacDonald enjoyed a luxurious lifestyle which was short-lived after everything fell apart following a ruling by a federal court judge.
According to a Sydney Morning Herald report, the former AFL star was ordered to pay $1 million and was also disqualified from managing corporations for 12 years, as the Federal Court handed logistics provider GetSwift the largest-ever penalty for breaching continuous disclosure laws.
The court stated that the defender turned entrepreneur was focused on his bank balance, not 'his legal obligations as a director.' 'A few years ago I lost 200 million...it was f---ing brutal,' Macdonald said in a recent YouTube interview.

Speaking about his downfall in the interview, MacDonald claimed that at the age of 30 he was at the top of the world. He also said that during that time he was one of Australia's youngest public company CEO's who was enjoying first class (flights), best restaurants.
Macdonald, who claimed to be in the young rich list before everything vanished, was ultimately out of his depth in 2018 when Get Swift's downfall began.
Macdonald's company's trade was suspended by the Australian Securities Exchange over allegations that he misled the market by overstating forecasts and failing to disclose the loss of major contracts.
To make matters worse for him, a record penalty of $15million followed and Macdonald was also ordered to pay $1million in damages, according to media reports. He was also disqualified from managing corporations for 12 years.
The court, at the time, described Macdonald's startup GetSwift as a company that 'became a market darling because it adopted an unlawful public-relations-driven approach to corporate disclosure. It further said that the company was instigated and driven by those wielding power within the company.'
How Macdonald brought best out of him after downfall
The
NFL
star admitted that his professional reputation was destroyed and he resorted to consuming alcohol and anti-anxiety drugs as a coping mechanism. 'The rage I felt inside of me that it was all over was insane,' he said.
Macdonald also revealed that a magic mushroom retreat, daily journaling, meditation and therapy helped in becoming the best version of himself.
Magic mushroom retreats are guided, multi-day experiences which are designed for healing and personal growth. As a part of the experience, participants consume psilocybin mushrooms in a safe, supportive setting with trained facilitators.

Spotify Users In India Will Have To Spend More On User And Family Plans: What You Pay Now

Last Updated: Spotify plans in India are going up for the first time which means you will need to spend extra every month to listen to music, podcasts and more. Spotify plans in India are now going to cost you more money. The company has changed its pricing in India for the first time since its launch in 2019. The new plans will be revised for users, duo and even the family versions. The platform is looking at ways to manage the overhead costs involved in running the app and also continue to bring new features for its users. These price changes are applicable in markets like the Middle East, Africa, Europe and Asia-Pacific among others. The basic Spotify individual plan will now cost you Rs 139 per month, which is a Rs 20 hike on the current version. Similarly, the Spotify Duo plan, which allows two people to use one account, now comes at Rs 179 per month, which is a Rs 30 increase on the previous offering. And the family plan has got the biggest hike of Rs 50, which means you need to spend Rs 229 (rather than Rs 179) per month for up to 6 people to use one account. This might be the first time when Spotify has revised plans in India but its free offerings are clearly taking a backseat in the last few years. The platform has reduced the number of features you get with the freemium version that has ads. You even see basic options like repeating a song or playing its lyrics removed from the free tier. Spotify isn't the only streaming platform to make changes to its services in India. YouTube had recently increased the price of the Premium version that gives you ad-free video streaming and access to the YouTube Music app. Spotify is clearly looking to turn the free users into paid subscribers, and in addition to that, the company now wants to increase its revenues from these emerging markets, as the competition looks to build its own streams. We're yet to see the Spotify Hi-Fi version launch in the market, but hopefully that changes in the coming months. view comments First Published: August 05, 2025, 08:17 IST Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. After 3 years on run, conman arrested for Mudra loan fraud

Hyderabad: A man involved in multiple Mudra loan fraud cases has been apprehended by the Hyderabad Commissioner's Task Force, Central Zone Team. The accused had been absconding since 2021, operating across the Hyderabad, Cyberabad, and Rachakonda commissionerates. Police arrested ShaikJani alias HarinathRao (34), a native of Nalgonda District. He was previously implicated in seven Mudra loan cases. According to police, Jani moved to Hyderabad in 2011 in search of a livelihood. After working for various private firms, he became dissatisfied with his salary and subsequently lost his job during the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, which led to severe financial hardship. While unemployed, he began watching YouTube videos about government financial schemes and became familiar with the process for obtaining a Mudra loan. 'Jani hatched a plan to cheat people, particularly targeting women involved in small-scale businesses who were in urgent need of financial support. By falsely promising to assist them in securing Mudra loans, he collected money and documents from the victims and then absconded,' said YVS Sudheendra, DCP Task Force. On August 1, police apprehended the accused, and the seized materials were handed over to IS Sadan police for further action.

Seeman restrained from making defamatory remarks on DIG

Chennai: Madras high court has restrained Naam Tamilar Katchi (NTK) chief coordinator, Seeman , from making defamatory statements against deputy inspector-general of police Varun Kumar. Justice K Kumaresh Babu issued the interim order on a civil suit filed by Varun Kumar against Seeman. Varun Kumar contended that Seeman began a personal tirade against him ever since he acted against an NTK member, 'Sattai' Duraimurugan. Duraimurugan was arrested by Tiruvallur district police for causing a law-and-order issue due to a false claim on his YouTube channel about the death of Foxconn factory workers from food poisoning. He was also detained under the Goondas Act, Varun Kumar said. At that time, he was serving as superintendent of police at Tiruvallur district. Following Duraimurugan's arrest, Seeman developed animosity towards him, the officer stated. He added that Seeman had been making disparaging remarks against him in the media since then. Seeman termed him a 'beggar' and sullied the image of the entire police force in the country by saying he was 'after all an IPS officer'. Hence, there shall be an order of interim injunction as prayed for, the judge said, and adjourned the hearing to Aug 6.
