144pc rise: the new home trend changing the way Queenslanders live
Experts within home improvement have said they have seen a vast uptick in people adopting this trend, with the majority spending a minimum of $20,000 on these rooms.
Sauna builder SDS Australia reported seeing a 144 per cent year-on-year rise in new inquiries, along with a 112 per cent increase in customers looking to build their own saunas.
Managing director Michael Doubinski said he had recently seen homes with whole floors full of wellness amenities, from saunas to cold plunges and gyms.
'It seems that people are discovering wellness and that it's not optional anymore,' he said. 'Eventually I think that every home will have a sauna, as it's one of the most proven and time tested health machines on this planet.'
TH7 Homelabs – a division of wellness company TH7 – began in 2024 in response to these rising trends. Co-director Danny McDonald said the combined total of 20 of their ongoing residential projects was 'easily more' than $500,000.
'I would say any new architectural build has a wellness space now,' he said. 'It's replacing the cinema or the wine cellar; why not put in an area that's actually going to give back to your health?'
Mr McDonald said every new home plan he saw across his desk came with a wellness room, and one of his ongoing apartment projects included a wellness space on every one of its seven floors.
For residential upgrades, saunas and ice baths – some of the most common additions – are typically valued between $20,000 and $40,000.
Meanwhile, higher-range items such as red light beds can total up to $120,000.
'Towards the end of Covid, people started being much more aware of their health,' Mr McDonald said. 'It's not just young people that are invested in this stuff – older people are definitely seeing the results in a good health protocol.'
'It will absolutely grow more. A wellness space in your house is worth more than any other room, because it'll give you the best return on your health.'
Savva Koulouris of Place Woolloongabba said in the past two years there had been a big focus on health and wellness amenities in the home.
'A lot of people are giving up drinking, focusing on working out and taking care of their bodies,' he said.
'Having (wellness spaces) in your home allows you to take it seriously.
'You'd be surprised how many buyers want a sauna or steam room … for lower priced points, that's a pre-built infra-red sauna, but in the luxury market we're seeing proper hardwood, built-in Swedish saunas in the house.
'I've also seen a few people putting in in-ground ice baths, because those two go hand-in-hand.'
Mr Koulouris said a number of factors were contributing to a move towards at-home wellness, including the Covid pandemic, generational shifts and a greater focus on wellness, not just fitness, within society.
'Through the pandemic we learned we could do a lot of things from home, like working and working out,' he said.
'As a result, people are now spending more on their homes because they are spending more time there.'
Mr Koulouris said buyers in the 30-45 age bracket tended to be the ones most interested in homes with home gyms, yoga studios, mediation spaces and steam rooms.
'[This demographic] is losing formal dining and living spaces to make way for practical, open plan living with health and fitness spaces,' he said.
'Most people are encouraging their kids to be more and more active, but yards are becoming smaller, so these spaces allow kids to be active in a different way.'
When parents of three, Manoli and Paras Antonarakis built their Carina Heights home through Gant Construction, they made sure to include a Finnish sauna, a magnesium swimming pool with spa and an oversized garage with space for a home gym.
'We're very active people, we play a lot of sports and have an active lifestyle,' Mr Antonarakis said.
'This gives us time for 'me time' and to focus on health and wellbeing.'
Mr Antonarakis said anyone with a young family would know fitting in workout and wellness time on top of work and children was nearly impossible.
'If you have to go to a gym or a pool, it takes you away from your family,' he said.
'The whole point of building houses like ours is that you don't have to go out to do those things, you're bringing it home.
'I can put the kids to bed, eat dinner then I'd go for a swim and sauna every night.'
Mr Antonarakis said he and his wife also opted for a magnesium pool, as it was better for their children.
'We used take our eldest daughter to swimming lessons and, because the pools are so highly chlorinated, she'd be unwell after every lesson,' Mr Antonarakis said.
'Once we had our magnesium pool, we could hire a swimming instructor to come to our house.'
The couple have listed their current home for sale, but are planning even more health and wellness inclusions in their next home, including a sauna and a basketball court.
Mr Antonarakis, who works in the development industry, said wellness inclusion in homes and apartment complexes were becoming expected, especially in properties priced in the high $3 millions and above.
'It's what the younger demographic wants,' he said.
'This demographic comes from era where health and wellbeing are imperative.
'We're already seeing unit complexes that have a plethora of all these spaces – steam rooms, sauna, yoga lawns and even cryotherapy pods.'

Big cat expert offers terrifying theory behind what might have triggered lion's attack on woman in Darling Downs zoo
A big cat expert has revealed why a woman may have lost her arm during a lion attack in the enclosure of a Queensland zoo. Emergency services were called to Darling Downs Zoo, near Toowoomba, at about 8.30am on Sunday to reports a woman in her 50s had been bitten by one of the big cats. It's understand the woman, who was not employed by the zoo but has had more than 20 years experience with lions, was watching over the keepers working inside the carnivore enclosure. Conservation Biologist and Scientist Dr Alexander Braczkowski believes the incident could be a result of 'one million different things' when it comes to a behavioural standpoint. 'It could be a lowering of the human body level, generally big cats respond in some sort of fear to humans,' he told 'Humans in an upright stance, they kind of see us as a bipedal (two legged) ape with forward facing eyes – so if you get low, and if you change your body shape, that can obviously trigger certain inquisitiveness from the animal. 'From what I saw (the woman) was watching the keepers in the predator precinct. 'These people are in an enclosure with an adult lioness, even if it is in 'human hand raised'.' Dr Braczkowski, who splits his time between the Sunshine State and running a lion monitoring effort in Uganda, said regardless of the woman's experience no one except for registered staff should have been inside the enclosure. 'Essentially, gold international standard of managing big cats and any kind of large mammals is a practice known as protective care – it's protective care of both the keepers and the animals,' he said. 'That protective care is really about trying to minimise dangerous contact between the animals and the caretaker … so keeping actual space from the enclosure, or separating the animal in a secondary enclosure when you are cleaning or maintaining that cage. 'The second question is how did a non-member of staff even get into close proximity with an adult lioness? 'I'm not trying to be patronising, but I find it quite difficult to use the argument 'oh, this person has experience'.' The big cat expert said it was dangerous being in close proximity with a lion regardless of being in a captive setting. Talking about the lioness encounters offered to visitors by the zoo, Dr Braczkowski said: 'I've said to people 95 per cent of the time it'll probably be okay, but 5 per cent of the time it won't be okay – if you've got a 250kg male lion, 180kg lioness. 'You know they're going to do damage to you.' He praised the paramedics and hospital staff treating the woman, who remains in a stable condition at Brisbane's Princess Alexandra Hospital and is set to undergo further surgery. 'I think the Australian medical authorities should be immensely proud of themselves,' he said. 'Just the sheer damage that lions can do in terms of blood loss, in terms of actually hurting a person – I mean this is pretty much smack bang testament to that.' The woman – described as a 'much-loved member of our family' – had been observing keepers working when the incident occurred, the zoo said in a social media post on Sunday. 'This is something that she has done many, many times over the past 20 years,' it wrote. 'She is well-versed in safety protocols around potentially dangerous animals. 'Inexplicably, at this stage, one animal grabbed her by one arm and caused severe damage to it. At no stage did this animal leave its enclosure and there was no risk at all to staff members or members of the public.' The zoo confirmed the animal did not leave its enclosure at any stage and there was no risk to staff members or the public. Another follow-up post indicated the woman was not a keeper or an immediate family member of the owners, and also asserted the animal 'will definitely not be put down or punished in any way'.

Aussies in their 30s and 40s are being diagnosed with cancer at unprecedented rates
Australians in their 30s and 40s are being diagnosed with cancer at unprecedented rates, with at least 10 types of the disease on the rise. The worrying phenomenon, known as early onset cancer, is drawing increasing concern from experts who say the trend is steep, widespread, and in many cases, not fully understood. New figures from Cancer Australia, the federal government's cancer agency, reveal staggering increases between 2000 and 2024. Among 30 to 39-year-olds, rates of prostate cancer have climbed by 500 per cent, pancreatic cancer by 200 per cent, liver cancer by 150 per cent, uterine cancer by 138 per cent, and kidney cancer by 85 per cent. While changes in diagnostic techniques may partially account for the growth in some cancers, such as prostate, most of the rise appears to defy such explanation. Professor Dorothy Keefe, the chief executive of Cancer Australia, told the ABC's Dr Norman Swan that approximately 10 types of cancer are now showing significantly elevated rates in young adults. She says that cancer has traditionally been a disease of ageing, with common forms such as bowel, breast, and lung cancer typically becoming more prevalent in older populations. And Australia isn't alone in facing this challenge. Data from cancer registries in the United States show a similarly dramatic rise in early onset cancers. Dr Philip Rosenberg, a recently retired biostatistician from the US National Cancer Institute, has observed clear generational differences when comparing Generation X to the Baby Boomers. He said the most notable increases have occurred in cancers of the colon, rectum, thyroid, pancreas, prostate (in men), and oestrogen receptor-positive breast cancer (in women). According to Dr Rosenberg, around half of all cancer types now show some generational shift in incidence. Bowel cancer is of particular concern in Australia, where rates among 30 to 39-year-olds have increased by 173 per cent since the year 2000. Even more troubling is the fact that diagnoses in this age group often come at a later stage, when the disease is more advanced and harder to treat. Despite decades of research, the causes of cancer remain complex and elusive. All cancers are caused by changes in genes, but not all of these changes are inherited. In well-known hereditary cases such as the BRCA mutations linked to breast and ovarian cancer, or Lynch Syndrome associated with bowel cancer, a clear genetic pathway is evident. However, most young people affected by early onset cancer do not carry these mutations. Instead, many scientists believe that environmental factors — or the 'exposome' — could be playing a role. These are external influences that interact with a person's genes to trigger malignant changes. The key may lie in understanding the environment that today's 30- and 40-year-olds were exposed to as children or even in utero, particularly between the 1960s and 1990s. During those decades, the Western world experienced major societal shifts. Childhood obesity began to rise, diets became more reliant on ultra-processed foods, and antibiotics were more commonly prescribed. Caesarean section rates also increased, potentially disrupting the transfer of microbiomes from mother to child — a factor that could affect immune system development. Microplastics still the great unknown Compounding the concerns is the growing presence of synthetic chemicals and plastics in everyday life. Despite being a new area of research, some scientists have warned that microplastics can have harmful effects on the human body, especially in large concentrations. In 2022, microplastics were detected in human blood for the first time, sparking a flurry of new research. As the name suggests, microplastics are small plastic particles, less than 5mm in diameter, and are reported to be near ubiquitous: they have been found in drinking water, food, and the atmosphere. A University of Newcastle report commissioned by the World Wide Fund for Nature found that the average individual could be ingesting as much as 5 grams, or 1 credit card's worth of microplastics every week. The WHO said in 2019 that the most immediate risk to human health could be from the toxicity of some microplastics, which may be from the production process itself or toxic substances the particles pick up from the environment. 'Further research is needed to obtain a more accurate assessment of exposure to microplastics and their potential human health,' said Dr Maria Neira, director of the WHO's department of public health, environment, and social determinants of health said at the time.
