RM45 million monthly savings since egg subsidy slashed, says minister

Published on: Tuesday, July 22, 2025 Published on: Tue, Jul 22, 2025 By: Mohamad Fadli, FMT Text Size: Agriculture and food security minister Mohamad Sabu said the supply of chicken eggs is currently stable and that prices remain reasonable. (Bernama pic) Kuala Lumpur: The government is estimated to have saved RM45 million a month following the reduction of egg subsidies which took effect on May 1, said agriculture and food security minister Mohamad Sabu. He told the Dewan Rakyat that the subsidy cut would result in savings of up to RM135 million over a three-month period before the full termination of the subsidy on Aug 1. He was responding to a question from Sheikh Puzi Sheikh Ali (BN-Pekan) about the savings from the reduced subsidy spending and its impact on the egg market and overall cost of living. Mohamad, known as Mat Sabu, said the supply of chicken eggs was stable and that prices remained reasonable. In July alone, egg production is expected to reach 1.75 billion eggs, while domestic consumption is estimated at 1.06 billion, he said. 'This indicates a surplus of 0.69 billion eggs, some of which will be exported,' he added. Mohamad said that to ensure continued stability in egg supply and pricing, his ministry, together with the domestic trade and cost of living ministry, would closely monitor the situation. He added that the savings from the reduced subsidy spending would allow the government to redirect funds towards initiatives and programmes that provide direct benefits for the people. In April, the agriculture and food security ministry announced its decision to end the subsidy after industry players committed to ensuring a stable and sufficient egg supply, following the stabilisation of production costs. In June 2024, Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim said the government had decided to reduce the retail price of grade A, B and C eggs nationwide by three sen. This subsidy scheme involved an expenditure of RM100 million. The government initially planned to float egg prices in July 2023, but postponed the move due to concerns about potential price increases and the impact on consumers. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Wait and see on Ambalat

Twenty years ago in 2005, Shell and national upstream company Petronas Carigali signed production sharing contracts for two deep-water blocks – Blocks ND6 and ND7 in waters up to 4,000 metres deep off Sabah on disputed acreage that overlaps blocks awarded to Unocal by Indonesia. Before that, in 2002, the International Court of Justice awarded the islands of Sipadan and Ligitan in the Celebes Sea area of Ambalat, to Malaysia. But it did not establish delimitations in the surrounding waters. Shell and Petronas Carigali were awarded joint operatorship of the two deep-water tracts with each holding 50 per cent equity. Nga said the Ministry of Local Government and Rural Development (KPKT) had taken proactive steps by inviting the MACC to investigate the project following various allegations labelling it a 'white elephant' and other claims of mismanagement. 'There were previously various allegations labelling this project a white elephant and so on. Because of that, the KPKT took the initiative to invite the MACC to investigate. 'When the MACC didn't come to us, we went to them and handed over all the documents for their review,' he said during a question-and-answer session in the Dewan Rakyat. Nga said the MACC subsequently issued a statement confirming that there was no abuse of power, no criminal elements, and no signs of corruption related to the project. 'So to those who threw stones, don't hide your hands. On behalf of all the hardworking KPKT staff who have been tirelessly helping the people, I demand that those who made slanderous accusations apologise,' he said. Nga added that the MyKiosk initiative, which aims to provide standardised, low-cost business premises for small traders, remains part of the government's agenda to support grassroots entrepreneurs. In May, Parti Pribumi Bersatu information chief Datuk Tun Faisal Ismail Aziz claimed that the MyKiosk project was wasteful and had turned into a white elephant. Selangor MCA Youth also lodged a complaint with the MACC, urging an investigation into the funding and implementation of the RM150 million MyKiosk project. Its chief, Tan Jie Sen, claimed that despite the large allocation, just over half of the kiosks were occupied. Nga said as of July 2025, the occupancy rate for MyKiosk stood at 2,926 units (91.75 per cent), while MyKiosk 2.0 recorded an occupancy of 3,518 units (86.78 per cent). * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news?
