Three Moroccan referees appointed for the 2025 U20 World Cup in Chile
The officials include referee Jalal Jayed and assistant referees Lahsen Azgaou and Mostafa Akarkad, according to the list released Wednesday by the FIFA Referees Committee. In total, 54 officials, 18 referees and 36 assistant referees, from 22 member associations have been chosen.
This edition of the tournament will feature the use of Football Video Support (FVS), following trials conducted last year during the U-20 Women's World Cup in Colombia and the U-17 Women's World Cup in the Dominican Republic.
The FVS system was introduced in response to repeated requests from member associations for a more affordable technological tool to support referees.
Unlike the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) system, FVS does not involve dedicated video officials and does not automatically review all potentially game-changing incidents.
Instead, team coaches are allowed a limited number of challenges per match to request reviews of clear errors related to goals, penalties, direct red cards, or mistaken identity. Players can also suggest to their coaches when a challenge might be warranted.
The Moroccan U-20 national team, which qualified for the tournament, will compete in Group C. They will open their campaign against Spain on September 28 in Santiago, face Brazil on October 1 in the same city, and then travel to Valparaíso to take on Mexico on October 4.

Torino Step up Chase for Zakaria Aboukhlal
Torino are stepping up efforts to sign Moroccan winger Zakaria Aboukhlal from Toulouse. According to Sky Sport Italia and Gianluca Di Marzio, the Serie A side have tabled an $8m bid, plus bonuses, for the 24-year-old winger with talks now underway between the two clubs. Aboukhlal, who scored seven goals and delivered four assists in 26 Ligue 1 appearances last season, is on the list of players expected to leave Toulouse this summer. Club president Damien Comolli confirmed the club are open to offers. 'We're leaving the door open for Zakaria Aboukhlal,' he said in a press conference. Wolves, Southampton and Rennes are also reportedly monitoring the player, though no formal bids have been submitted by the Premier League sides. Born in the Netherlands, Aboukhlal holds an EU passport and is under contract at Toulouse until June 2026. He joined the French side in 2022 from AZ Alkmaar for $2m. Torino director Davide Vagnati attended Saturday's friendly between Toulouse and RB Leipzig in Villingen-Schwenningen, reportedly to advance negotiations. Aboukhlal was absent from the matchday squad. Meanwhile, Torino are also in talks with RB Leipzig for a possible return of North Macedonia midfielder Eljif Elmas, who spent the last six months on loan with the German club. Aboukhlal's versatility and pace down the right flank are seen as key to Torino manager Marco Baroni's plans for the upcoming season. Tags: TorinoToulouseZakaria Aboukhlal

Trabzonspor Close in on Benjamin Bouchouari
Trabzonspor are edging closer to signing Moroccan midfielder Benjamin Bouchouari from AS Saint-Étienne, with negotiations between the two clubs reportedly advancing. According to Foot Mercato, ASSE received a $3 million bid earlier this week for the 23-year-old, which was swiftly turned down. The French club are said to be holding out for around $5 million. Turkish journalist Safa Can Konuksever claimed: 'Trabzonspor's latest offer reaches $3.5 million, including bonuses. The difference is now around $1 million. An agreement could be reached by the end of the week.' Bouchouari, who joined Les Verts from Dutch side Roda in August 2022 for $1.1 million, has one year remaining on his contract. He has not featured in any of Saint-Étienne's pre-season fixtures since the squad returned to training. The midfielder has played 96 matches for ASSE, 70 of them as a starter. Despite flashes of potential, he has struggled to establish himself in the side and deliver consistent performances fully. According to Kuzey Ekspres , both clubs are 'close to an agreement' and discussions are continuing. The Turkish side, who finished seventh in the Süper Lig last season, appear confident of landing the player. Transfermarkt currently values Bouchouari at $5 million. A move would allow ASSE to recoup a decent profit on the Moroccan midfielder, who was brought in shortly after the club's relegation to Ligue 2. With just a year left on his deal and limited progress in talks for a contract extension, Bouchouari's exit looks increasingly likely. 'Saint-Étienne will have to make a decision quickly,' one French football source said. 'They can't afford to lose him for free next summer.' As it stands, Trabzonspor remain the frontrunners, but Girona have also shown interest. The final outcome could depend on how far the Turkish club are willing to go financially.
