Mother-daughter pageant winners focus on mental health as they prepare for next contest
But along with physical stamina, dancing and competing can require mental endurance as well.
So her platform for the Miss Teen International contest is 'Dance with Ambition: For Mind, Body & Health.' Since being accepted into the pageant, she's been busy practicing for interviews, the walk on stage, and her overall demeanor at the competition, which is the week of July 24 and 25 in Kingsport, Tennessee.
'I've been a dancer my whole life and I've really seen through the whole experience — and especially doing it competitively — it's a lot on your body physically and mentally,' said Julia, who focused mainly on ballet and jazz in her earlier years.
Though Julia has been participating in pageants since age 11, she got a boost last year as Miss Teen Greece International, when her mom joined in on the fun as Mrs. Greece International 2024.
'It was really exciting because it was the first time I ever did anything like that,' said Jennifer Yock, her mom. 'We had a really fun time doing it together.'
Julia said though she hasn't experienced any mental health issues, she knows emotional challenges are more prevalent than ever. She's an ambassador for the National Alliance on Mental Illness South Suburbs, as well as Dancing for Dancers and I'm a Dancer Against Cancer, supporting organizations through fundraising.
'Dancing really helped me mentally, it's a great way for me to express myself or be myself,' said Julia.
She wanted to represent Illinois for the current contest partly because she enjoys Chicago and the Midwest, finding the people here 'kind, outgoing and passionate.'
'The Chicago area has really good food, too,' she added.
Julia also participates in cheerleading and enjoys scrapbooking. Her favorite subject at St. Michael School in Orland Park was science. She'll start this fall at Marist High School in Chicago.
The mom/daughter team also cares about their heritage, which is why they wanted to participate in the 2024 contest focusing on Greece.
'I loved learning about my heritage,' said Julia. 'I was able to travel to Greece and I learned a lot about my family, where they were from (Athens) and the country and culture.'
But their participation together was what made the experience even better. They both learned pageants are about more than just beauty.
'I'm so proud of her,' Yock said. 'I didn't know anything about the pageant systems but when I found out it was a great way for young girls to learn communication skills, interview skills, become confident in themselves. … That's the reason I got my daughter into this. As a mom, I have seen Julia grow so much in her confidence, people skills and communication.'
Another element of the process has been face-to-face practice, important in an age where social media and texting rule.
Julia said all the practicing for pageants has made a difference. She was accustomed to performing because of her dancing and cheerleading but interviewing was something new.
'I wasn't able to speak very well in front of people, I wasn't confident,' said Julia. 'But I feel the pageants have really helped me with that and helped me grow my confidence in interviewing.'
The social element of pageants has been a perk, too.
'I really like meeting all the girls there because a lot of them are from different states and countries,' said Julia. 'I've made a lot of friends, too.'

Amid slowdown, Miami restaurants take summer pause, promise return
Though a summer slowdown has claimed a stunning number of Miami's best-known restaurants, some recent closure announcements have hinted at an eventual return. That includes Itamae Ao, the intimate, Michelin-starred restaurant that announced its closure Saturday. State of plate: It's unclear when these restaurants will reopen, or if they will offer the same dining experience and meals as before. But after the string of closures announced thus far this summer, we can only hope they stay true to their word. Torno Subito, the Italian restaurant on the rooftop of Julia & Henry's food hall in downtown, said in late June it was time for "a summer pause" and was "taking a little break." A spokesperson told the Miami Herald the restaurant was using the time to "focus on development, and prepare for an even stronger return in the winter." Ensenada, the Latin American and coastal cuisine restaurant housed in MiMo's Vagabond hotel, took to Instagram to announce the restaurant was taking a "summer hiatus" with "plans to reopen after the season with changes to the concept." The post acknowledged the summer slowdown and said it was using the time to "pause, regroup, and explore ways to return" next season. Piegari Italian, which opened last summer in Wynwood, fell short of saying it was closing for a break. Instead, its message hinted at an eventual return.

Outlander: Blood Of My Blood Stars Talk That Time Paparazzi Almost Spoiled The Show's Biggest Twist And Starting Season 2 Early
When you buy through links on our articles, Future and its syndication partners may earn a commission. The world of Outlander is returning to the small screen soon in the 2025 TV schedule with the premiere of Blood of My Blood. The prequel spinoff centers on the respective love stories of Julia Moriston (Hermione Corfield) and Henry Beauchamp (Jeremy Irvine) as Claire's (Caitriona Balfe) parents as well as Brian Fraser (Jamie Roy) and Ellen MacKenzie (Harriet Slater) as Jamie's (Sam Heughan) future parents. It seemed like a straightforward premise... until the trailer blew up any straightforward assumptions by revealing that Julia and Henry will travel back in time and possibly meet Brian and Ellen. I was fortunate enough to speak with the cast of Outlander: Blood of My Blood, including actors who will be playing the younger versions of some key Outlander characters, at San Diego Comic-Con 2025. They opened up about the big twist getting spotted by the paps and the early renewal for Season 2. Papparazzi Caught Photos Of Time-Traveling Julia The big twist that got Outlander fans talking was revealed in the trailer, with the shocker that we won't be watching one love story unfolding in the 18th century while the other was in the 20th. Julia evidently will go through the same standing stones that changed Claire's story forever, to encounter Jamie's future parents. When I spoke with Hermione Corfield at SDCC, I had to ask: was it a challenge keeping secrets about Blood of My Blood will filming the first season? She responded: There's a point where I couldn't say I time traveled, People would ask, they'd be like, 'Talk about your character,' and I'm like, 'She works in the reduction office,' word for word. I can't say anything else. There's nothing else to say. As somebody who had noticed that there were plenty of press photos released ahead of time with the 18th-century Scottish characters and not nearly as many of Julia and Henry in the 20th century, the time travel twist immediately made sense. The show did a pretty excellent job of keeping a lid on spoilers, considering that the time travel seems to be about as central to Blood of My Blood as time travel in the original Outlander. Hermione Corfield went on to explain what happened when she filmed outside for 18th century scenes with some paparazzi in the mix: The first time outside... they were like, 'You have to have umbrellas over you when you walk around, in case you get papped.' So we were walking around with umbrellas, and we've been walking around all morning. We take the umbrellas down, and there's just three paparazzi in like perfect view. [laughs] Set up and ready to go. And they just watched the whole shooting of the scene, because they get perfectly placed. Well, if those pap pics circulated online after they were snapped, they didn't get to everybody! I hadn't seen them, and based on social media chatter after the trailer release, plenty of Outlander fans were as surprised as I was to see Claire's mom going through the same stones that would claim her daughter a couple decades later. The big time travel twist seems to have been at least mostly preserved. The Cast Is Already Working On Season 2 Starz wasted no time in renewing Blood of My Blood for at least one more round, with an order for Season 2 announced more than a month before Season 1 arrives. Production kicked off in late June, using the same sets that Outlander used for years before filming wrapped for Sam Heughan and Caitriona Balfe in 2024. So, when I had the chance to speak with Sam Retford (playing Dougal MacKenzie), Seamus McLean Ross (playing Colum MacKenzie), and Rory Alexander (playing Murtagh), I had to ask what it's been like for them to get started on Season 2 when Season 1 won't premiere until August 8. Retford responded: We spent so much time preparing for Season 1 with the boot camp. I mean, we started sort of floating around the project in 2023 and then to be at this position now, and looking all the way back to then seeing how long we spent working and developing these characters, put so much effort in there, and then to see that pay off, and the anticipation be taken away, and go, 'No, actually, it does work, we've done it.' Going from the "floating" stage in 2023 to taking Hall H at San Diego Comic-Con directly after Outlander's panel debuted the first Season 8 footage on stage is certainly an epic way to see how high anticipation is for the payoff! Fans still have some time to wait before the two-episode premiere, but the cast has already seen some of the first season. Sam Retford went on: We've watched episodes in it, and it looks fantastic. As a fan of these stories, it is going to be extremely satiating to open that universe up. And so then approaching Season 2 just feels like we can sort of take the pressure off ourselves and think, 'Okay, let's just play with these characters. Let's have fun with them. Let's enjoy.' A perk for the actors playing Dougal, Colum, and Murtagh has to be that even if they aren't wrapped up in the main time travel drama like the two couples, their characters also can't be killed off. Outlander guarantees their survival, and Season 2 can expand their stories. As Seamus McLean Ross said: There's a deeper dive into their kind of inner worlds. In Season 2, you'll get the kind of more intricate understanding of their kind of inner psychology more. Not the kind of like given circumstances of the show, but the more kind of deeper dive into their psychology. For now, the days are counting down until Season 1 kicks off on Starz on Friday, August 8 at 8 p.m. ET. That will be almost exactly eleven years to the day that Outlander premiered back in 2014, which strikes me as a good sign for the show. As for the original series, Claire and Jamie will return for their final season at some point in 2026. Julia Garner Gives an Update on the Madonna Biopic
Madonna has pretty much set the standard for every entertainer born in the '80s and beyond—hence why she's the subject of a long-awaited biopic. The pop culture icon was originally set to direct, produce, and co-write the project, which has experienced several hurdles since its announcement in 2020. For a while, Fantastic Four: First Steps star Julia Garner was rumored to have been cast as the 'Material Girl,' though it was never fully confirmed. However, it seems likely that Julia is still tied to the role, as she reassured SmartLess podcast hosts Sean Hayes, Will Arnett, and Jason Bateman that the long-awaited Madonna biopic is 'supposed to still happen.' Bless!!! Allow us to give you a rundown on all the behind-the-scenes changes that the Madonna biopic has experienced. In 2020, the project was tied to Universal Pictures, with Jennifer's Body writer Diablo Cody on board as co-screenwriter alongside the seven-time Grammy winner. However, according to Entertainment Weekly, Diablo had pulled out to focus on other projects the following year. Later, in June 2022, a source close to the project sparked rumors that Julia was slated to star. At the time, they told People, 'The Madonna project is in active development, and Julia Garner is the choice to play Madonna in the biopic.' Then, in January 2023, Variety reported that the film was no longer being developed by Universal Pictures. That same year, Madonna embarked on her Celebration World Tour, and Julia fed into casting rumors when she made an appearance on the 'Borderline' singer's tour stop in Brooklyn. The Inventing Anna star helped judge an on-stage ballroom competition set to Madonna's 1992 hit, 'Vogue.' When asked about the experience on The Today Show, Julia shared, 'You know, we just had fun on stage. It was amazing. She was amazing. It was an incredible experience.' At that point, she played coy and still hadn't confirmed whether she was involved with the biopic. In July 2024, Madonna teased that she had teamed up with Erin Cressida Wilson to rework the project, which is rumored to have a working title of Who's That Girl as an homage to her 1987 movie of the same name. Now, Deadline reports that a Netflix limited series based on Madonna's life is in the works with Shawn Levy. The outlet confirmed that the series is 'not related' to her biopic. And while fans STILL don't know when we can expect to see said biopic, Julia did dish during her SmartLess appearance on how she landed the lead role. 'It just came about…like I knew that they were doing a project, making a movie about it, and then I went out to audition,' Julia explained on the pod. 'I kind of just wanted to see if I could do it.' She revealed that because she had no dance experience, she had to train during the audition process, only to perform for the 'Material Girl' herself. Naturally, Julia asked herself: 'What would Madonna do?' 'Which is like convincing you that she deserves…to be in this room,' she said of her audition. 'And I owned it. I was like, 'You can take it or leave it, but if you leave it, if I leave, then that's on you.''
