David Malukas had a surreal moment during Friday's NTT INDYCAR SERIES practice for the Chevrolet Detroit Grand Prix presented by Lear.
While easing off the throttle to find space for a clean lap around the tight, 1.645-mile downtown street circuit, Malukas briefly felt as if he was in a virtual world – like iRacing rather than the real-life cockpit of his No. 4 Clarience Technologies Chevrolet for A.J. Foyt Enterprises.
That illusion hit when, out of his peripheral vision, he noticed an unusual scene: Kyle Kirkwood's No. 27 Siemens AWS Honda being pushed down the track by Will Power's No. 12 Verizon Team Penske Chevrolet.
'I totally do that video game,' Malukas said. 'It was pretty cool to see them blast through and driving by going in the air. I was like, 'What the hell is going on?' I couldn't believe it. I thought something was wrong, and Power was towing him across like the 'Cars' movie. It was interesting at first, but then I realized it was not.'
With qualifying simulations hinging on a clear, traffic-free lap, frustration was inevitable. Malukas slowed, Kirkwood got bottled up, and Power came barreling in.
"Everyone is going slow around here,' Kirkwood said. 'The track isn't big enough to fit all the cars, and he got frustrated.'
Power took matters into his own hands, literally, by pushing Kirkwood's car and then shoving him aside.
'I came around, and he (Kirkwood) slowed up in the middle and I made contact,' Power said. 'So, I thought I may as well get a gap now, so I just pushed him by the car in front, then booted him out of the way and got a nice gap. If I hadn't touched him already, I thought: 'Oh, well, I'm already touching him, I might as well keep pushing.'
Kirkwood, who had a similar run-in with Santino Ferrucci during last year's practice, was less amused.
'It's whatever, I guess,' Kirkwood said. 'Does it give him the right to push my car through a couple of corners and almost cause a wreck? I don't think so ... Everyone's stopped. I don't know. I'm not upset. I don't care. I'll move on. I've never seen that before.'
Despite the chaos, Kirkwood emerged fastest in the session with a lap of 1 minute, 1.7509 seconds. Power was third at 1:02.3862.
'Andretti has always done a great job preparing street course cars, and this is another example of that,' Kirkwood said. 'Hopefully we can continue this pace throughout the weekend.'
Kirkwood earned NTT P1 Award honors on the streets of Long Beach and led 46 of 90 laps in victory in the Acura Grand Prix of Long Beach on April 13. He's the only driver not named Alex Palou to win a race this season.
Hamilton Returns to Booth with New Knowledge
Davey Hamilton's two-week 'vacation' from the INDYCAR Radio Network booth turned into one of the most hands-on learning experiences of his broadcast career.
Swapping his analyst headset for a strategist's one, former INDYCAR SERIES driver Hamilton called the shots for Jack Harvey's No. 24 DRR CUSICK INVST Chevrolet during the 109th Running of the Indianapolis 500 presented by Gainbridge.
'It was a learning curve,' Hamilton said. 'I was a little nervous coming into it. We got Jack from the back to the front. I worked hard. I think I overstudied a little bit, to be really honest with you.'
Harvey began the race from the 26th starting position. Hamilton guided Harvey to stay out under an early-race caution, launching him up to fifth place on Lap 24 as one of just six drivers on that alternate call.
The strategy worked well until a brake issue entering pit road derailed the run, dropping Harvey to a 22nd-place finish.
While the race result may not have yielded a top finish, Hamilton walked away with a far greater understanding of today's NTT INDYCAR SERIES landscape that will enhance his storytelling and analysis from the booth, starting in this weekend's Chevrolet Detroit Grand Prix presented by Lear.
'That's really going to help me a lot,' Hamilton said. 'I learned so much that's going to relate to the fan now that I can tell about the cars and what they're going through. I feel my strategy is going to be better in the radio booth now than it was before because you've got to take gambles starting in the back and risk it to take those gambles.'
The strategist stint gave Hamilton an updated, first-hand view of the current generation of INDYCAR machinery.
'These cars, the hybrids, the aero settings, the extra weight – there's so many things,' Hamilton said. 'It kind of got me really up to speed.'
Team Penske Keeps Indy 500 Timing Stand Personnel
Team Penske is maintaining the same personnel on its three timing stands this weekend in Detroit as it did for the 109th Running of the Indianapolis 500 presented by Gainbridge, where several leadership changes were made prior to the May 25 race.
The changes stemmed from a rule violation in which two of the team's entries were found in violation of INDYCAR rules during '500' qualifying weekend. Team President Tim Cindric, INDYCAR Managing Director Ron Ruzewski and INDYCAR General Manager Kyle Moyer were released from the team, and all three also served as respective race strategists for Josef Newgarden, Power and Scott McLaughlin.
Team Penske shuffled the timing stands for all three cars for the '500,' and those movements are in place for Sunday's 100-lap race. For Newgarden, Luke Mason is serving as strategist and Raul Prados from the Porsche Penske Motorsport sports car team is serving as the lead engineer. Ben Bretzman has moved from engineer to strategist for McLaughlin, with Malcolm Finch as the lead engineer. Porsche Penske Motorsport Managing Director Jonathan Diuguid is serving as Power's strategist, while Dave Faustino remains as Power's lead engineer.
The short turnaround between races, plus IMSA's race at the same Detroit street course, enables a seamless integration of personnel from Penske's sports car program into the INDYCAR operation.
McLaughlin was second fastest Friday while Power and Newgarden were third and fourth, respectively.
'Sort of a normal week,' Newgarden said. 'We prepped as much as we can.'
Palou on F1 Drivers' Minds in Spain
Alex Palou became the first Spaniard to win the '500.' With Formula One competing in Spain this weekend, Spanish drivers Fernando Alonso and Carlos Sainz Jr. expressed admiration for their countryman and his accomplishments.
'I always rated Alex very highly because I was his teammate in cadet, and he was very quick in cadet karting,' Sainz said. 'What he's doing in America is something really admirable. I think to dominate in the way he's dominating, you have to be very good at what you're doing. Then Formula One is a completely different discipline, different world, but I don't have anything else but respect and admiration for what Alex is doing in Indy.'
Alonso made three '500' attempts, qualifying for the race twice, and believes Palou is elevating the country to new heights.
'Great for Spain,' Alonso said. 'Great for him to have the Indy 500 now after winning the INDYCAR (championship) for a few consecutive seasons and now leading the championship, as well.
'So, he's doing great there. I know that most of the drivers dream about a Formula One seat and having a career here. But he had the opportunity in INDYCAR, and he maximized every single day there. He's a legend in INDYCAR, and he will be a legend always in INDYCAR. So, I think he's not missing Formula One, and I'm very happy for him because he's a very, very talented driver.
'We are just following him from here with a lot of respect and as a fan, because I was watching on Sunday the race and just hoping that he would finally make it – and he did it. So, happy for him.'
VeeKay Believes DCR Changes Will Boost Results
Michael Cannon returns to Dale Coyne Racing after spending six years (2014-19) engineering for the organization. He served as an engineer in recent seasons for Chip Ganassi Racing and AJ Foyt Racing.
Cannon will engineer Rinus VeeKay's No. 18 askROI Honda in part of a personnel shakeup that also returns Mike Colliver to the team to lead engineer Jacob Abel's No. 51 Blue Oval SK Honda.
'He's synonymous with success in INDYCAR,' VeeKay said of Cannon. 'Really good to have him around. He seems like he's at home. A lot of people already knew him in the team. I'm really excited. I think everybody's a little bit more afraid of this team now.'
VeeKay is 12th in points with three top-10 finishes this season. He believes Cannon can take his team to the next level with all his experience and knowledge. That showed Friday with VeeKay ending up ninth in practice.
'He has a lot of info,' VeeKay said. 'Like this season, we were kind of struggling with our brakes. He's already found one solution and has a backup solution to that solution. He has a backup to the backup solution. He just knows a lot of stuff. He's done everything 10 times.'
Grid Penalties for Rahal and Dixon
Scott Dixon's No. 9 PNC Bank Chip Ganassi Racing Honda had an unapproved engine change prior to last Sunday's '500.' As a result, the team was in violation of Rule 16.1.2.3.2 because this his fifth engine used this season.
Graham Rahal also changed engines on Miller Lite Carb Day, violating Rule 16.1.5.4: Once an Indianapolis 500 Mile Race Engine is fitted to the Car, removal prior to the Indianapolis 500 Race is an Unapproved Engine Change-Out, unless it is replaced for Repair.
Both will serve six-position grid penalties for Sunday's 100-lap race.
Teammates Rossi, Rasmussen Reach Different Milestones
Alexander Rossi and Christian Rasmussen enter this weekend's race with very different trajectories but shared momentum from standout moments in last Sunday's '500.'
Rossi led 14 laps, surpassing 1,000 INDYCAR SERIES career laps led, with 1,010 in 153 career races. However, his day was cut short by a mechanical failure after 73 laps, resulting in a 28th-place finish in the No. 20 ECR Java House Chevrolet.
Rossi has been consistent on the streets of Detroit, finishing fifth in both races since the series returned to the downtown course.
'We need to minimize mistakes, execute in every session, and if we do that, there's no reason we can't be fighting for the podium,' Rossi said.
Rasmussen, a second-year driver, made headlines by leading his first career INDYCAR SERIES laps – eight in total, at Indianapolis. He passed Rossi on the Lap 29 to lead his first career lap in the No. 21 ECR Splenda Chevrolet.
'Taking the early restart in second, I was thinking to myself, the smart thing here would probably be to stay in second,' Rasmussen said. 'Just stay behind and save some fuel. But coming to the green, I just couldn't help myself, so I came storming by Alex (Rossi). It was a cool experience and obviously special.'
Energized by his Indy performances, Rasmussen eyes a good weekend in Detroit.
'Coming off a strong Indy 500, I'm really excited for the rest of the season,' Rasmussen said. 'The No. 21 Splenda Chevrolet crew has some solid momentum, and we're ready to build on that.'
Country Star Wright To Sing Anthem, Perform at WWTR
Country music singer Chase Wright was named as the national anthem singer for the Bommarito Automotive Group 500 presented by Axalta and Valvoline on Sunday evening, June 15 at World Wide Technology Raceway. The Indiana native also will pay tribute to St. Louis-area first responders and relief workers by performing a free concert.
Wright offered the gesture following last week's tornado that affected the region.
Odds and Ends Andretti Global added Siemens to serve as the primary sponsor on Marcus Ericsson's No. 28 Siemens Honda at this event. The company sponsored Kirkwood for the 109th Running of the Indianapolis 500 presented by Gainbridge and continues to sponsor Kirkwood this weekend, along with Amazon Web Services. Andretti Global, Team Penske and Arrow McLaren had eight of the top 12 times on Friday. Chip Ganassi Racing was led by Palou, who was 15th fastest. Dixon was 18th and Kyffin Simpson 20th in the No. 8 Ridgeline Chip Ganassi Racing Honda. Next up is practice at 9 a.m. ET on Saturday, followed by NTT P1 Award qualifying at noon. Both sessions will air on FS1, the FOX Sports app and the INDYCAR Radio Network.

The IndyCar Series takes on one of the most legendary tracks in the world this weekend with the Java House Grand Prix of Monterey at WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca. It's an unforgiving track with little margin for error around the 2.2-mile lap. It features one of the most challenging turns in the racing world, commonly known as "The Corkscrew", a blind left-right combination that drops 59 feet in elevation in a second. "It's very old style. It doesn't allow you to have mistakes," Chip Ganassi Racing driver Alex Palou said after securing pole position in qualifying. "It rewards you a lot when you can be right there on the limit ... as soon as you go off, you can crash quite easily." Palou will start the race from pole position for the second year in a row. That's how much of the season has been for a driver on the brink of history entering the final four races of the IndyCar season. Here's how the Spaniard become the most dominant driver in the world in 2025. Palou vaults to the top Palou began racing after seeing a go-kart track on the walk to school with his father as a 6-year-old in Barcelona. Within five years, he'd won multiple national titles in karting and transitioned to open-wheel racing series across the world. His results in the likes of Formula 2, Formula 3 and Japanese Formula 3 earned him an IndyCar test in 2019. Dale Coyne Racing signed him for the following season after the test. Strong drives during his rookie season - notably a podium finish in his third-ever IndyCar race - caught the eye of Chip Ganassi, head of one of the best teams in series history. Chip Ganassi Racing signed Palou for the 2021 season and it paid off immediately. He won the IndyCar Series title in his first season with Chip Ganassi Racing, becoming the first Spanish driver to do so. A tumultuous 2022 campaign gave way to a methodical championship win in 2023. Last year was an improvement again with 14 top-five finishes in 18 races behind an incredible attention to detail. 'He's in pretty rarefied air right now,' Ganassi said after Palou won the 2024 title in Nashville. 'His name has to be among and certainly in the conversation of the great drivers. He's certainly in the conversation of the greatest.' That title made Palou the 13th driver ever to win three American open-wheel racing championships. His Chip Ganassi Racing teammate, Scott Dixon, is the only other active driver to do so with his six championships. "Having [Dixon], probably one of the best if not the best IndyCar driver that we've ever had, being able to see so much that's been teaching me so much about everything," Palou said. "How to work, how to stay focused, how to never give up, just push it and always be able to adapt." He has adapted and evolved into even more of a force in 2025. Palou's dominant 2025 campaign IndyCar is known as a "spec series," meaning all teams buy their cars from the same manufacturer (Dallara) and have two choices for an engine supplier: Chevrolet and Honda. Both offer the same total power. There's no advantage from a top designer or dominant engine supplier seen in Formula 1. It's down to the drivers and teams to set up their cars and consistently perform, something Palou relishes. "The love of the sport pushes me," Palou said. "Obviously I want to win more and get more championship wins and race wins, whatever, but for me it's coming every single weekend, working with my engineers trying to figure what's the best to do with the car. How we can we improve it, how I can improve myself and push a little bit more?" IndyCar challenges its drivers by racing on road courses (such as Laguna Seca), street courses and ovals. Each format puts different demands on the drivers: the small margin of error on road courses, tight quarters of street races and high-speed challenges of ovals. Palou established himself as a consistent contender on road and street courses early on but there were still questions about his acumen on ovals. He won four of the first five races in 2025 ahead of the biggest race in the series: the Indy 500. He started sixth but took the checkered flag in first place. "It's the only win that can change your life," Palou said. "Your face is going to be on the trophy forever. Even if IndyCar ends in 10 years, that trophy's going to have my face forever. "Or even if it goes for 1,000 more years, my amazing face and my amazing nose is going to be there forever, right?" he added with a smile. Through 14 races, Palou has seven wins. That's one less than his total from his last two seasons combined. There's a chance he could surpass the record for wins in a single season with 10, currently held by icons A.J. Foyt (in 1964) and Al Unser Sr. (in 1970). Sweeping the final four races would give him 11. Palou could get one step closer to that record on Sunday. Laguna Seca is by far his best track on the calendar; he never has finished lower than third and won from pole position last season. Can anyone catch Palou? The 2025 IndyCar grid features four multiple-time champions, Palou included, but he's been far ahead of the rest of the field. Dixon, a six-time champion who holds the record for most IndyCar wins (59), offered Palou a "gift" after the Spaniard won the Indy 500. "I've also got a surprise for Alex," Dixon joked at the Indy 500 awards ceremony. "I've bought yourself, your wife, all your family a summer vacation. Starts this Thursday, it's for five weeks. I hope you really enjoy it, it's all included, whatever you need." With a five-week break, he could have still led the standings. Mathematically, Palou could win the 2025 title this weekend. With a win and most laps led plus Arrow McLaren's Pato O'Ward finishing 25th or lower, Palou would win his fourth championship in five years. O'Ward has been on a hot streak lately with two wins in the last three races, separated by a Palou win at Iowa Speedway, and starts second on the grid for this weekend's race. O'Ward has the best chance to catch Palou before the final checkered flag flies at the Nashville Superspeedway on Aug. 31. It's still an uphill battle as Palou holds an 100-point lead in the championship entering race day from Laguna Seca. "Maybe now it doesn't feel as special as probably in 10, 15 years whenever I look back and see that it's opening minds of some people in Europe and especially Spain," Palou said. "People knowing that it's not only possible to come to the U.S. and IndyCar and have fun and have a career, but also to win and fight for championships and Indy 500s. Hopefully that inspires one, two, 10 drivers in Spain and they see that there's a future for them here." Alex Palou captured his fifth pole of the 2025 IndyCar season, extending his championship lead over Pato O'Ward to 100 points. O'Ward will make a career-best start at the track Sunday on the outside of the front row, setting up an intriguing title battle. Like he did in Sunday's race on the streets of Toronto, Pato O'Ward and his No. 5 Arrow McLaren crew executed Saturday in qualifying for Sunday's race at Laguna Seca in what's become do-or-die territory for the driver and team who might need a miracle to be able to seriously challenge for an IndyCar championship come next month's season-finale at Nashville Superspeedway. But unlike Sunday at Toronto, Alex Palou and Chip Ganassi Racing shined, too. The final two realistic title contenders will start Sunday's 95-lap race at WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca sharing the front row, with Palou extending his championship lead over O'Ward back to triple digits from 99 to 100 with the single bonus point awarded for taking his fifth IndyCar pole of 2025 at the track he won from pole at a year ago. In four career starts at the central California track, O'Ward had recorded a pair of Fast Six appearances, a career-best start at the track of fifth and had started no worse than ninth, but the 26-year-old Mexican driver had finished no better than fifth either — ultimately a solid but not overly impressive resume. In contrast, Palou has started all over the front half of the field in his four career starts — fourth, 11th, fifth and first — but he's never finished off the podium, with a pair of wins coming in 2022 and '24 to go with a runner-up in 2021 and third in 2023. And so as O'Ward and his team knew entering last weekend's Toronto street race, not only do they need to turn the tables on past results — something they did both on strategy smarts and raw speed in Toronto — but they also likely need Palou and his No. 10 crew to stumble, too, in order to make up valuable points to give themselves a reasonable chance with three races to go to challenge the two-time defending champs for the Astor Cup. With Palou's comfortable margin in Saturday's Fast Six — 0.2867 seconds back to O'Ward in second — it's clear more needs to be found overnight by the No. 5 crew. Qualifying results: IndyCar Java House Grand Prix at Monterey qualifying, starting lineup, time 'It's my best start here, so I'll take that,' O'Ward said participating in just his second Fast Six session of 2025, the other leading to pole at The Thermal Club in March. 'Alex just did a really strong lap. My qualifying was a bit more scrappy, especially from (Round 2 to Round 3). I found four-tenths, but I needed two more to be closer. 'It just makes it that much harder whenever the (driver) you're trying to beat is having as good of days or better. But it just makes us push even harder, and I think it's going to be a great opposition and view going into Turn 2.' Palou made a point to note that after starting last year's Laguna Seca race on pole, he lost the lead by Turn 2, but he'd ultimately ride strategy and speed back to the front to lead 48 of 95 laps and a cushion at the checkered flag of nearly 2 seconds. McLaren Racing CEO Zak Brown: IndyCar must remain 'commercially viable' despite team's growth The championship leader said he's looking forward to Sunday's battle with his lone serious title contender with whom he'll share the front row. 'I always think that it's better to have your closest competitor close. You want to be on kind of the same strategy, and you want to know — I think when you have somebody starting like 17th, it might look good on paper today, but then suddenly they do a crazy strategy and they cycle to the front, and you have, like, no chance to fight for it on track,' Palou said. 'I think it's great. I think it's good. It's for sure making it more challenging and more interesting for everybody. Honestly, I like it.' 'It's just so random and bizarre': Elsewhere throughout the front of the field, two-time Laguna Seca race winner Colton Herta will start on the inside of the second row in third with a trio of Team Penske, or Penske-affiliated, drivers trailing him in Josef Newgarden (fourth), Will Power (fifth) and David Malukas (sixth). O'Ward's teammate Christian Lundgaard will start seventh, followed by the Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing duo of Graham Rahal (eighth) and Louis Foster (ninth), with Meyer Shank Racing's Marcus Armstrong (10th) rounding out the top 10. Other notables from qualifying include Felix Rosenqvist in 12th, Scott McLaughlin in 13th, Marcus Ericsson in 15th, Kyle Kirkwood in 18th and Scott Dixon in 20th.

Two-Time Laguna Seca Race Winners 1-2 in Weekend's Final Practice

INDYCAR Colton Herta reminded the NTT INDYCAR SERIES field Saturday that he, like points leader Alex Palou, has won two series races at WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca. Herta did that setting the fastest lap of the rescheduled final pre-race practice, a session known as the warmup. The 30-minute affair was moved out of its Sunday time slot amid expectations that the coastal fog would linger on the Monterey Peninsula as it did on this day. SEE: Warmup Results Herta's best lap in the practice was 1 minute, 9.6028 seconds. Palou was second at 1:10.0273 while Palou's top championship contender, Pato O'Ward, was down in the order in 11th place (1:10.5414). Herta won what is known this year as the Java House Grand Prix of Monterey in 2019 and 2021. Palou won in 2022 and 2024. The only other driver in this 27-car field who has won the event is Chip Ganassi Racing's Scott Dixon, the winner in 2023. Dixon was third in this session. Sunday's 95-lap race is set for 3 p.m. ET on FOX, FOX Deportes, the FOX Sports app and the INDYCAR Radio Network. It's worth noting that warmup performance isn't always an indicator of which car will fare the best in the race. Chip Ganassi Racing's Palou will start on the pole for the second consecutive year. The driver of the No. 9 DHL Chip Ganassi Racing Honda won last year's race by 1.9780 seconds over Andretti Global w/ Curb-Agajanian's Herta. Alexander Rossi, who was driving for Arrow McLaren, finished third. Palou has two of the past three Laguna Seca races, including the 2022 race when he won by more than 30 seconds, and holds a 99-point over O'Ward, an Arrow McLaren driver. Four races remain. Andretti Global's Kyle Kirkwood (minus-173) and Chip Ganassi Racing's Scott Dixon (minus-174) are the other drivers mathematically eligible for the championship, but they will need a lot go right. Team Penske's Josef Newgarden, who is having the most challenging season of his career, had the lone significant incident in this session. He lost control of his machine in Turn 3, the car sliding into the gravel on the left side of the corner. Newgarden was closing on Dale Coyne Racing rookie Jacob Abel when he lost the back end of the car.
