Chennai-bound Air India flight returns to Mumbai due to burning smell inside cabin
Mumbai (Maharashtra) [India], June 28 (ANI): A Chennai-bound Air India flight returned to Mumbai, its departure location, after being alerted about a burning smell inside the cabin, the airline confirmed on Saturday.
According to Air India, the incident occurred on Friday (June 27) on flight AI639, which departed from Mumbai and was headed to Chennai.
'The crew of flight AI639 operating from Mumbai to Chennai on Friday, June 27, 2025, made a precautionary air-return to Mumbai due to a burning smell in the cabin,' an Air India spokesperson said.
'The flight landed safely back in Mumbai, and an aircraft change was initiated. Our ground colleagues in Mumbai provided all necessary support to passengers to minimise the inconvenience caused by this unforeseen disruption,' the spokesperson added.
In another incident, a non-specific security alert was detected on one of Air India's aircraft on Friday. The aircraft was cleared for the next flight after standard security procedures, the Air India spokesperson said.
A statement issued by the Air India spokesperson said, 'A non-specific security alert was detected on one of our aircraft. Standard security procedures were duly carried out, and the aircraft has been cleared for the next flight. Air India accords top priority to the safety and security of its passengers and crew.'
Earlier, Air India Express (a subsidiary of Air India) flight IX2564, operating from Delhi to Jammu, was forced to return to its point of origin after a technical issue was detected mid-flight.
The flight, operated by an Airbus A320 aircraft, had a scheduled departure time of 10:40 AM but took off at 11:04 AM. It was expected to arrive in Jammu at 12:05 PM. However, the aircraft was diverted back to Delhi, as per Flightradar24.
Confirming the development, an Air India Express spokesperson said, 'An alternative aircraft was arranged to operate our Delhi-Jammu flight after the original aircraft returned to Delhi due to a technical issue. We regret the inconvenience caused.'
These security concerns have come to light following the crash of the London-bound Air India-171 flight in Ahmedabad on June 12, killing 241 out of 242 passengers and crew members on board. (ANI)

Amarnath Yatra 2025: CRPF implements multi-layered security To secure the Jammu-Srinagar National Highway (NH-44) — a key route for the Yatra — the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) has implemented a multi-tier security framework. The highway, frequently used by thousands of pilgrims, is now under heightened surveillance. Special focus has been placed on vulnerable stretches such as the Udhampur sector. CRPF personnel, supported by K-9 (dog) squads, are conducting continuous patrols, particularly in sensitive areas. The force has increased highway monitoring and deployed teams for rapid response in case of any incident. Joint mock drill tests emergency preparedness In a coordinated effort to enhance disaster readiness, a mock landslide drill was conducted on Sunday at Samroli, Toldi Nallah along the Jammu-Srinagar highway. The joint exercise involved the Indian Army, CRPF, Jammu and Kashmir Police, and the Jammu and Kashmir State Disaster Response Force (JKSDRF). The simulation focused on rescuing stranded vehicles and injured pilgrims. Teams provided immediate medical attention and efficiently evacuated mock victims to nearby hospitals. Deputy SP (Headquarters) Udhampur, Prehlad Kumar told news agency ANI that such exercises strengthen the preparedness of security and disaster teams. 'These drills enhance the readiness of disaster management and security personnel to address emergencies and protect devotees throughout the pilgrimage season,' he said. Amarnath Yatra: Trial run at Yatri Niwas A trial run was also held at Yatri Niwas, the base camp in Jammu, to assess logistical arrangements. Buses were sent under full security cover to test transportation plans. Deputy Commissioner of Jammu, Sachin Kumar Vaishy told ANI that all arrangements are in place. 'Today [June 30), tokens will be distributed at Saraswati Dham. We appeal to people to come in large numbers; we will provide them with all the necessary facilities,' he said. Amarnath Yatra 2025: Security review meeting held in Udhampur Ahead of the Yatra, Director General of Police (DGP), Jammu and Kashmir, Nalin Prabhat chaired a high-level security meeting in Udhampur. Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Udhampur Amod Ashok Nagpure presented a comprehensive plan outlining force deployment, convoy management, emergency protocols, and langar (community kitchen) security. The DGP emphasised real-time coordination between agencies and the readiness of drone units, bomb disposal squads, and Quick Reaction Teams. Police tighten vigil in Jammu district The Jammu Police, in coordination with paramilitary forces, have established joint nakas (checkpoints) at strategic points across the district. These are operational 24/7, particularly near city peripheries, national highways, and approach roads to the Bhagwati Nagar base camp. The checkpoints focus on identity verification, vehicle screening, and detection of suspicious movement. They are supported by facial recognition systems at high-density zones. Random checks are also being conducted at hotels, guesthouses, and lodgement centres. Considering the anticipated increase in passenger numbers during the Kumbh Mela, expanding the Nashik airport is essential. We are addressing the issue with Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, who has assured the expansion of the Nashik airport before the Simhastha Kumbh Mela commences," he said.

The first batch of pilgrims will be flagged off from the Jammu base camp on July 2, 2025, while the Yatra will officially begin on July 3, 2025, via both the Baltal and Pahalgam routes. Earlier, in a preemptive effort to ensure safety during the upcoming Amarnath Yatra 2025, a joint mock landslide drill was conducted by the Indian Army, CRPF, Jammu and Kashmir Police, and the JKSDRF (Jammu and Kashmir State Disaster Response Force) at Samroli, Toldi Nallah, on the Jammu-Srinagar National Highway on Sunday. The exercise aimed to assess emergency preparedness in case of landslides or natural disasters during the pilgrimage.
