
The Parallel Path by Jenn Ashworth review – a soul-searching walk across England
Not that there weren't contributory factors. Lockdown had left her with post-Covid cabin fever, itchy to be elsewhere after the long months of caring for her family and students ('a one-woman battle against entropy'). She also knew that at every pub and guest house she'd booked en route supportive letters would be waiting from her terminally ill but brilliantly animated friend Clive. Most importantly, although her walking wouldn't be solitary, since she couldn't avoid bumping into other (potentially annoying) hikers, she'd be 'the sole owner of my own skin again'.
As she flogs herself 'onwards towards impressiveness', her journey is marked out plainly. The chapters detail the distance and destinations of each day's walk. They also convey how brittle, sour and grumpy she can be, and how blistered and footsore she gets: she might be 'off on a jolly' but there's a price to pay, in pain and guilt. She doesn't go in for nature writing: when she evokes 'the damp green air and the heavy, alive smell of the still-wet branches and mulchy undergrowth', it's a plain-as-muck authentic response, not a 'soft' poeticism. Maybe that's down to her being grittily northern. She does reflect on what it means to come from the north, but her version of northern-ness isn't Alfred Wainwright's, whose 'gruff complaining' she engages with throughout – enjoyably and sometimes scathingly.
He's not the only fellow traveller in her head. Nor is Clive, with his letters, nor Ben, her late first husband, whose 24 marathons in 24 months, completed after he was diagnosed with terminal cancer, were an amazing achievement. Mostly it's writers she carries with her – Henry David Thoreau, William Hazlitt, Werner Herzog (who walked from Munich to Paris to see his dying mentor) and Virginia Woolf – whose ideas inspire her own. (Had it come out sooner, David Nicholls's novel of last year covering the same route, You Are Here, might have featured too.)
What's captivating about her book is all the thinking she does mid- or post-trek: on writing, friendship, welfare, illness, Charles Atlas, climate change, protest marches, knitting, and why it is that in popular mythology 'walking women' are either models on a catwalk or sex workers. As she wanders, her mind wanders. Solvitur ambulando: she's not sure what exactly it is she's trying to solve by walking, but the book's as much an invigorating mental workout as it is a hard physical trudge.
Memories surface, too, from childhood and adolescence: of a girl called Alice she knew who died in a 'horrible accident' when Ashworth was 10 and whose photo she hid in a bottle; of her volunteering for the Samaritans as one of the women (Brendas, they were called) who'd listen on the phone to distressed or lonely callers, including men who'd masturbate as they talked; of how she returned to Preston from Cambridge University 34 weeks pregnant at the age of 21 and made it her home again. In her last nonfiction book, Notes Made While Falling, Ashworth devised a method that married narrative fragments with philosophising lyrical essays. Here the storyline is simpler – a walk, start to finish – but the method is much the same.
Towards the end comes the threat of failure. She loses her balance and falls – no injury is sustained, but the dizziness feels ominous. Then a heatwave arrives, making the scheduled completion of the walk impossible. The complications gather to a major health crisis, closer to home than the one affecting Clive. Mercifully, there's an upbeat outcome, adding another layer to the motif of care. The walk that the author saw 'as a break from the labour of care turned out to be a path that led me deeper into understanding my own need for it'.
'Not until we have lost the world do we begin to find ourselves,' Thoreau wrote. Ashworth didn't walk 192 miles in order to find herself. But she's newly conscious afterwards not of her stamina and sure-footedness but of her frailty, of how 'my body is more fragmented and vulnerable than I wanted it to be'. Despite her guise as an 'armoured little being stomping her way across the entire country', she's forced to embrace a new kind of gentleness. And rather than exulting in independence, she's back among friends and freshly available to 'the traffic of love'. Chastened but buoyant, she's stimulating to be with, her book the best kind of walking companion.

I loathe skiing and the cold — but Switzerland in the summer? Heaven
It's the height of summer and I'm normally embracing my inner lizard beside a pool in the 30C-plus heat of a Mediterranean island. Instead I find myself in hiking gear beneath the shadow of a glacial Swiss mountain, having gone into full Heidi mode. Shy chamois graze on the hillside, rare wildflowers burst out and the silence is broken only by the clanging bells of a cow herd. I'm out of my holiday comfort zone, but this year — like many other Brits — I wanted something more chilled than the soaring temperatures of the southern Med hotspots. Switzerland has never appeared on my bucket list. I've been once and that was by mistake, after driving back through the Alps from Rome in April while caught in the Icelandic ash cloud of 2010. We let the kids out of the car for five minutes to make snow angels before motoring on. I loathe cold weather, can't ski and am indifferent to fondue. But Switzerland in summer is an altogether different creature. After two trains from Zurich to Chur, I board a pristine red double-decker Rhaetian train, on time to the second, for the start of a very different sunshine adventure. The route takes me on one of the world's most scenic journeys, nearly four hours of jaw-dropping drama through Unesco world heritage protected areas to my minibreak destination, the mountain village of Pontresina in the southern Upper Engadin region. A carousel of turquoise lakes, snow-capped mountains, storybook cabins in wildflower meadows and the spectacular Landwasser viaduct play out like CGI (one-way ticket from about £70; It's the first time in my life I haven't been desperate to reach my hotel, and I hope it won't be a letdown after the dazzling entree. One glance at the five-star neo-baroque structure of the Grand Hotel Kronenhof, in all its Wes Anderson-style glory, stop those thoughts in their tracks. The handsome building, which opened its doors in 1848, has 112 elegant rooms. • 10 of the most beautiful places in Switzerland Like many Swiss grandes dames, the hotel originally made its name by attracting upper-class English gentleman types who journeyed for days to take in the local spa waters and pure air. Now visitors are mostly Germans and Italians, us lot having long since discovered the allure of the package deal. But the Kronenhof is on a mission to get the Brits back by promoting the appeal of spending summer and autumn in the region, and staying at the hotel (which is a third less full than in the peak ski season). The panoramic view and intense colours continue from the hotel windows and balcony in my airy, modern room. To the left is the Roseg glacier, straight ahead there are green pines and larch forests which become a symphony of reds and yellows in the autumn and, beneath me, a rushing blue river. It's priceless, which is just as well because this place doesn't come cheap, reflected in everything from the impeccable service to the tasteful furnishings. Some rooms, including the Kronenhof cocktail bar, have been transformed by Pierre-Yves Rochon (the designer behind the Four Seasons George V in Paris and Waldorf Astoria Beverly Hills) with teal sofas and dark cherry walls. • Discover our full guide to Switzerland In the reading room I count 11 original black Eames lounge chairs, and the rather magnificent Grand Restaurant (jacket required for men) has ceiling frescoes by Otto Haberer, chandeliers and a minstrels' gallery for the occasional string quartet, while offering a formal yet family-friendly breakfast and dinner. Standout dishes include the poached rock lobster and cheesecake with chocolate almond crumble and cherry foam. I try the other two restaurants, each with its own distinct flavour and character. There is a weekly Swiss fondue or raclette served up in the hotel's basement bowling alley. The gourmet restaurant Kronenstübli is a slice of old Switzerland with pine-panelled walls and original Engadin furniture. But a simple salmon salad lunch at the old wooden Le Pavilion in the garden is just as satisfying, a bowl of sunshine topped with homegrown herbs and flowers. The Swiss cheese platter is presented so prettily that I have to photograph it. Then there's the spa. If Daniel Craig had helicoptered on to the lawn in his James Bond Speedos and breaststroked across the infinity pool, I would have been stirred but not greatly shaken, such is the lavish scale of this 2,000 sq m glass structure. The saunas alone are dizzying. There's a Finnish one; a nude, women-only one with coloured lights and essential oils; a stone steam bath; a flotation room with underwater music; a saltwater grotto; as well as whirlpool, jets and waterfall. There are 13 therapy and treatment rooms, a state-of-the-art gym, and experiences from guided mountain treks to biking tours. I make my own bath salts in the lupin-filled gardens, grinding together freshly picked herbs, then sunbathe on the day beds, breathing in pure mountain air and admiring the bluest of pollution-free skies. • My hack for a family hiking holiday? Take the ski lifts in the Swiss Alps The hotel is in the heart of Pontresina, a charming and characterful spa village 1,800m above sea level, with its own microclimate and more than 300 sunny days a year. Those interested to learn more about the area may enjoy the Museum Alpin, about flora, fauna and geology, and the traditional houses, renowned for their signature sgraffito wall etchings. In the summer months temperatures are hot but not blistering, making it a paradise for hikers and bikers. There are also plenty of cafés, gift shops and outdoor adventure stores with names like Go Vertical. Tourists and locals look like they eat a lot of muesli and many are carrying backpacks bigger than themselves. If you are even mildly adventurous, you will embrace this place. There's wind and kitesurfing, paddleboarding and canoeing for the water-lovers, and endless trails for hikers and runners. In the summer months, bird watching, forest bathing among the Swiss pines and goat trekking are popular. The hotel offers ebikes and a 20-minute ride will reward you with Lej da Staz, a beautiful lake in the middle of a pine forest, popular with wild swimmers and picnickers. Bling-lovers, bear with me. Just a ten-minute cab ride away to the west is the glitz and glamour of St Moritz, beloved by Hepburn, Hitchcock and Chanel and now home to every designer label under the sun, like a small and more perfectly formed Bond Street. The Kronenhof's sister hotel, the Kulm Country Club, claims the best views over Lake San Moritz — do stop by for a drink. Will a few days in the Upper Engadin financially set you back more than a week at your usual European summer destination would? In all honesty, probably. But is it worth it? Höll yes. I can't think of anywhere lovelier for a cheeky minibreak. You can keep your snow, your skis and your puffer jackets. But a Swiss summer? There are more than 400km of well-signed trails that pass through forests and run beside lakes, or you can brave the flow trails on the Corviglia mountain. London resident shares the biggest mistake American tourists make that all Brits hate
If you're an American trying to blend in while taking a trip across the pond, it may be best to forgo one particular habit. A fed-up Londoner shared a cautionary tale to traveling Americans, after noticing a particular quirk of visitors - taking to Reddit to share their constructive criticism. The keen observer said they were getting a coffee with a friend and were approached on three different occasions by Americans asking for directions. But when the tourists abbreviated the names of various locations, it left the Brit outraged. 'PSA to Americans visiting this summer: we do not shorten place names here,' the Reddit user titled the post. 'First [person asked] how to get to "Green" (Green Park), and that they'd come via "Edgware" (Edgware Road - obviously a totally different part of the city to Edgware itself),' the irate user complained. 'The next wanted to find their hotel in "Holland" (Holland Park, obviously not the country region),' they added. Their grievances didn't stop there, with the London resident writing they had noticed it happening a lot in another thread about life in the British city. 'As people who live here we got the gist of what they were saying yesterday, but it's such an unnecessary layer of friction,' they pointed out. The user went on by declaring it could potentially end up 'catastrophic' in some situations. 'If you're googling the wrong thing, asking for directions, researching somewhere (Gloucester instead of Gloucester Road, Liverpool instead of Liverpool Street, Leicester instead of Leicester Square etc.),' they wrote, before urging Americans to: 'Help yourselves out while visiting.' 'We did discuss reporting "Green" as a hate crime afterwards but let it slide to be polite,' they joked in a comment. Frustrated Londoners piled on in the comments, sharing other location abbreviations or mishaps that have annoyed - or impacted - them the most. '"Green" as an abbreviation is absolutely insane,' agreed a user. 'This does genuinely cause problems. Some are easy to spot - if you ask for Leicester instead of Leicester Square people are going to ask for clarification rather than direct you to the East Midlands,' they continued. 'But if you want Tottenham Court Road but you ask for Tottenham you may well be sent the wrong way!' 'Someone once asked me how to get to Oxford and I told them to go to the end of the street, turn right and walk 60 miles. I thought this was hilarious, but they did not see this as funny. The iconic zebra crossing is actually located at the St John's Wood area. And to make matters more confusing, there's a train stop called Abbey Road that is not where the iconic album cover was shot at all. 'I had to go to Stratford a few years ago and used the DLR. There is one station on the way called Abbey Road,' one Redditer shared on the thread. They jokingly observed along with a snap of a sign directing tourists: 'They have obviously had problems with tourists looking for the other Abbey Road as they put this sign up.' Someone else assured the annoyed user it happens with travelers to the US too. 'You joke, but in the hotel business this occasionally happens in America too,' someone chimed in. 'I had a guy run out in a hurry after he realized that he didn't feed the entire city name in to his GPS and instead ended up where I was, which was the same thing but shorter. They continued with their cautionary tale: 'I'm guessing he probably had to drive through the night to get to where he was going, since it was 400 miles away. He was a business traveler, so most likely his job was on the line.'
