DOSM to introduce National Agricultural Production Index in food security push

The Sun17-06-2025
KEPALA BATAS: The Department of Statistics Malaysia (DOSM) will soon introduce a National Agricultural Production Index to strengthen food security by addressing critical data gaps in the agriculture sector.
Chief Statistician Datuk Seri Dr Mohd Uzir Mahidin said the index, to be pushed quarterly, will offer a more comprehensive view of agricultural output, supporting evidence-based policymaking in a sector central to both livelihoods and economic stability.
The index is being developed in collaboration with several government agencies and will mirror existing statistical frameworks used for the manufacturing, electricity and services sectors.
'This data will help identify which areas are experiencing increases in agricultural output and the information can be shared across agencies for planning and policy-making purposes,' he added.
He was speaking to reporters after launching the 2024 Penang Interim Agriculture Census Report, officiated by State Agrotechnology, Food Security and Cooperative Development Committee chairman Fahmi Zainol here today.
Until now, national agricultural statistics have focused primarily on palm oil and padi production, which he described as 'not comprehensive.' The new index, he said, will offer more structured and detailed coverage of the broader agricultural sector.
Preliminary findings from the 2024 Agriculture Census indicate that the sector recorded sales of RM161 billion in 2023, employing 1.7 million people. These figures underscore the industry's potential if backed by strategic policies and innovation.
In Penang alone, agricultural sales reached RM3.5 billion, despite the state's small size. Individual farmers accounted for 93.1 per cent of agricultural holdings, with organisations making up the remaining 6.9 per cent.
The census also highlighted the active role played by senior citizens, with more than half of Malaysians aged 60 and above still engaged in agriculture.
Mohd Uzir noted that the presence of older farmers in the field remains strong, while youth involvement presents further opportunities to enhance sector productivity.

Youth involvement in Perlis agricultural sector too low

KANGAR: The involvement of young people in the agricultural sector in Perlis is still very low, raising concerns about the sustainability of the sector in the future, said Chief Statistician Datuk Seri Dr Mohd Uzir Mahidin. Mohd Uzir said that based on the findings of the 2024 Agricultural Census in the state, only 399 young people, aged between 15 and 30, are involved in the agricultural sector in Perlis out of a total of 18,839 individuals recorded participating in the sector in the state. 'This is a reality that we need to accept. Indeed, the number of youth involved in agriculture is very low compared to those who are older. But this sector still has great potential if we can attract more young people with the use of technology such as automation and drones,' he said. He said this to reporters after the launch of the 2024 Perlis Agricultural Census Interim Report here today. The launch was officiated by Perlis Agriculture, Plantation and Consumer Affairs Committee chariman Razali Saad. Mohd Uzir said that more detailed data from the agricultural census findings could help the state government and related agencies formulate policies, as well as appropriate incentives and more targeted programmes in efforts to address the challenge of attracting young people to the sector. He said that agricultural technology such as the use of drones, automation, and smart farming systems needs to be intensified to make the sector more appealing to the younger generation. Meanwhile, Razali said the agricultural sector in Perlis recorded a sales value of RM584.8 million in 2023, with the crop subsector being the largest contributor, recording a sales value of RM276.7 million, followed by the fisheries subsector (RM159.6 million), livestock (RM114.6 million) and aquaculture (RM6.6 million) among others. 'Of the total cultivated area of 58,500 hectares, 95.6 per cent is managed by individuals while the remainder is by corporate agricultural holdings,' he added.

Johor records highest GDP growth among states in 2024

JOHOR BAHRU: Johor recorded the highest Gross Domestic Product (GDP) growth rate among the states in 2024 at 6.4 per cent, surpassing the national average of 5.1 per cent, according to the Department of Statistics Malaysia (DOSM). In a statement today, the DOSM reported that Johor's GDP is valued at RM158.0 billion in 2024, supported by its strategic location in the southern part of Peninsular Malaysia, modern infrastructure network, major ports, and extensive and competitive industrial zones. In 2023, Johor recorded a growth rate of 4.1 per cent, with its GDP valued at RM148.6 billion. DOSM highlighted that the rapid development of data centres in the state is a key driver of economic growth, particularly in the services, manufacturing, and construction sectors. 'The services sector grew by 6.0 per cent, driven by large-scale investments in data centres. 'Notable expansions are seen in the finance and insurance subsectors, real estate, and business services, which grew by 8.7 per cent, alongside strong performances in the utilities, transportation and storage, and information and communication technology (ICT) subsectors, which grew by 6.0 per cent,' it said. Johor's construction sector surged by 42.7 per cent in 2024, fueled by building and civil engineering projects, including power substations, advanced cooling systems, and high-capacity fibre optic networks. 'This development of digital infrastructure, in turn, supports the manufacturing sector, which grew by 4.2 per cent, fuelled by non-metallic mineral products, basic metals and fabricated metal products, as well as electrical, electronic, and optical products, which posted 7.1 per cent and 1.9 per cent respectively,' DOSM added. DOSM also reported that Johor is a major contributor to the nation's agricultural output, accounting for 17.3 per cent of Malaysia's Agricultural GDP in 2024. It said that the state's agricultural sector also expanded, rebounding by 4.2 per cent compared to a 1.3 per cent decline the previous year, mainly driven by higher palm oil production. 'This increase also boosted growth of vegetable and animal oils and fats products, as well as food processing, which expanded by 6.7 per cent, providing additional impetus to the overall growth of the manufacturing sector,' it added.
