2024's Best Horror Game ‘Still Wakes The Deep' Gets Scarier DLC
Just when you thought you were out of the water, The Chinese Room pulls you back in. Out of nowhere, the indie developer has announced and will soon release Still Wakes the Deep's DLC expansion, Siren's Rest.
Still Wakes the Deep has been revived in a way that only makes the whole experience more claustrophobic and horrific, playing on its mantra of finding every single possible way to sink itself under your skin — this time, you get to relive the hellscape of the Beira D oil platform underwater.
Set in 1986, 10 years after the events of Still Wakes the Deep, Siren's Rest places you in the role of sole explorer Mhairi as she hops into a diving bell in the middle of the North Sea to explore the remains of the ill-fated drilling rig. Armed with only a camera, cutting torch, and crowbar, she surveys the wreckage both underwater and in the few remaining air pockets, hoping to learn what happened to the crew — but naturally, not everything is as dead as presumed.
Still Wakes the Deep, one of the top-three best indie games of 2024, was the deserved winner of three BAFTA Games Awards (second only to Astro Bot with five), thanks in part to its cast — two of its awards were for the ceremony's only both performer awards, namely lead role (Alec Newman as Cameron 'Caz' McCleary) and supporting role (Karen Dunbar as Finlay). As I said in my original review, it's a masterpiece of game acting, and to keep that spirit alive, this DLC sequel has enlisted top-tier talent to play on its biggest strength.

Siren's Rest, written by Sagar Beroshi of Helldivers 2 fame, introduces Lois Chimimba (Atomfall, Shetland, Doctor Who) as Mhairi, alongside Lorn Macdonald (Bridgerton, The Lazarus Project) and veteran voice artist David Menkin (Final Fantasy XVI, Valorant), once again overseen by SWTD's lead voice director Kate Saxon.
This one's had a bad time of it. For its little faults, 'Still Wakes the Deep' was probably the best ... More horror game of last year. If you've still not played it, you're missing out on a unique experience that finds multiple ways to freak you out, especially as you're an everyman character with no weaponry. Still, you might need subtitles if you're an American (or even southern British TBH; I was luckily born and raised not far from the Scottish border). It plays to better side of The Chinese Room's unpredictable back catalog ('Dear Esther'? Amazing! 'Little Orpheous'? Nah.) I've never felt more unsafe in a believable and carefully curated environment. Take a punt on it - in "How Long To Beat" terms, think of it as 'Avengers: Infinity War' and 'Endgame' put together, but it's all set on an oil rig in the 1970s and you gradually watch your fellow crew members turn into the worst monsters possible.
The trailer and screenshots of Siren's Rest point to plenty of 'if you know, you know' moments — undoubtedly encouraging a fresh playthrough for existing fans of Still Wakes the Deep like me — but it also unlocks yet another reason for SWTD virgins to punish themselves with mid-70s, Scottish-themed sadness, despair, and body horror.
I've always been a poltroon when it comes to horror games, but I managed to complete this one with only light degrees of discomfort, and I've recommended it to everyone I know; I've even bought it as a birthday present for three people. It's not exactly the most positive experience to reward becoming another year older, but whatever.
Siren's Rest lands on June 18 for Xbox Series X/S, PS5, and PC via Steam and Epic Games Store. It takes about 1.5 to two hours to complete, and it costs $12.99 — well worth the money, if past experiences are to be believed.
Meanwhile, if Still Wakes the Deep isn't your cup of tea, 2024's fellow, fear-filled classic Crow Country was a close second for the genre, and it's a near-perfect tribute to fifth-gen survival horror. It's also a lot less likely to force you to powerwash your trousers and/or seat of choice after playing.

Forced into a witness protection programme to escape a life-threatening danger, Anna and Maya leave their London lives behind, taking on new identities and relocating to a small rural town in Scotland. 'As they try to adjust to their new reality, the trauma of their past continues to haunt them in the form of two hitmen intent on tracking them down,' a plot synopsis reads. 'As the walls close in, it becomes clear that a dangerous figure from their past is still a looming threat.' The project will be filmed entirely on location in Scotland later this year, with further casting announcements coming in due course. Ramsey said: 'This story and these characters Daisy has created are so alive, nuanced, wickedly funny and scarily dark. Every character jumps off the page, the dialogue is incredibly witty and I'm so excited to get to play Maya opposite Daisy's Anna.' Haggard, writer, creator and co-director, said: 'Ever since I first dreamt up this show, there has only ever been one Maya… I wrote the part with Bella so clearly in my head and I honestly still can't believe they want to be part of it. Bella is pure magic, just insanely talented, and I can't wait for us to work together. I'm also thrilled to be taking the leap into directing, and excited to have the opportunity to co-direct the series alongside the brilliant Jamie Donoughue.' Maya was commissioned for Channel 4 by Ollie Madden, director of Film4 and Channel 4 Drama and Gemma Boswell, commissioning editor, drama. How F1 Fan Keanu Reeves Became the Face of Cadillac's New Racing Docuseries (Exclusive)
Keanu Reeves is back for more. After the huge success of North One's Brawn: The Impossible Formula 1 Story on Disney+, which was hosted by Reeves, budding F1 team Cadillac — who have the world of sport watching after nabbing a coveted 2026 grid spot — wanted to recreate the magic. And that includes the A-list action star, of course. More from The Hollywood Reporter U.K. Streaming Levy Officially Rejected by Government: "We Support a Mixed Ecology" BBC Deemed Bob Vylan "High Risk" Before Glastonbury Set, Moves Staff Off Live Events Team Italian Film Chief Resigns Amid Probe Into Tax Credit for U.S. Producer Now Accused of Double Murder 'Once [Cadillac] had seen [Brawn: The Impossible Formula 1 Story ], they were very keen to get the band back together,' North One boss and three-time BAFTA-winner Neil Duncanson tells The Hollywood Reporter. 'Keanu is up for it and he thinks the story is an extraordinary one.' The new docuseries, reported by THR earlier this week, will have Reeves serve as host and executive producer through his KR+SH production company as showbiz continues to capitalize on the wild success of F1 (see: Brad Pitt's movie currently obliterating the rest of the field at the global box office). The John Wick actor's passion for F1 goes back decades, Duncanson explains, so after sharing Brawn's story, helping to chronicle Cadillac's race to make a worthy car in time for the opening Grand Prix of the 2026 season was a no brainer. 'It was Keanu and [Brawn producer and Emmy-winning director] Simon Hammerson who came up with the idea that they would like to do the Brawn story,' Duncanson says about how Reeves came aboard the projects. 'But weirdly, they couldn't get the thing away in the States. So [former Brawn GP CEO] Nick Fry, who they'd been talking to, suggested speaking to me and timing was everything. Disney were looking for a British last dance, and it ticked all of the boxes.' 'Whilst we're not going to do exactly the same thing with Cadillac, we will be doing something similar,' adds Duncanson. 'We didn't want [Reeves] standing there doing pieces to camera or just a voice-over, we wanted to assimilate him into the narrative. But the main drives of the Cadillac story is us being on the inside and following everything that's going on as it's happening. I don't think anyone would have seen that before.' It sets apart the show from a series like Drive to Survive because it's documenting the build-up to the Melbourne Grand Prix in March as Cadillac prepare to make their hotly-anticipated debut in what is known to be an incredibly exclusive sport. Top of the list? Find a pair of fast drivers. 'The final test, our end game, is when they turn the engine on. Are they competitive?' Duncanson continues. 'They describe it as landing a man on the moon in record time. In terms of engineering, getting the right people, they've got to get the drivers. They've got to build the motor home and design the race suits and the color of the car and find sponsors — everything that goes into that enormous jigsaw that is building a Formula One team, you will see from the inside out.' The show will appeal to as many people as possible, not just those hardcore F1 fans, Duncanson adds. 'Formula One is a unique and extremely rarefied atmosphere… What we're aiming to do is appeal to a broader audience, and I think that's about the characters and the amount of access.' Filming on the docuseries began around a month ago and will continue through to the start of the 2026 season. As Duncanson speaks, he's getting ready to shoot at Silverstone, the British Grand Prix, from the weekend of July 4 onwards. 'Cadillac is one of the great motoring brands in the world,' Duncanson adds, 'known throughout the world as a luxury brand. But now, I think they're trying to reposition as a brand for the next generation.' North One is part of RedBird IMI's production giant All3Media.
