Oppn slams Odisha govt for grave lapses in chariot pulling
BHUBANESWAR : The delay in pulling of chariots during Rath Yatra in Puri which led to Lord Balabhadra and Devi Subhadra being stuck midway and Lord Jagannath barely moving a few metres from the temple has sparked a massive political outcry with the Opposition Congress and BJD blaming the state government for the mismanagement.
Stating that such occurrence is not a good sign for the state, president of Odisha Pradesh Congress Committee (OPCC) Bhakta Charan Das asked if pulling of the chariot of Lord Jagannath was delayed due to some genuine reason or was deliberate.
Questioning the government over the conduct of Rath Yatra, Das said the festival was marred last year too as Lord Balabhadra had fallen down while being taken to Gundicha temple from the chariot. 'This time, the chariot of Lord Jagannath moved for less than a feet.
The causes should be analysed properly. The reason for the delay is manmade. I had gone to the Rath Yatra. The crowd was not unmanageable inside the cordon as the government tries to make us believe,' he said.
Das also alleged that the process was deliberately delayed. 'I have heard that a VIP is visiting Puri tomorrow. The administration may give any reason, but this is what I have heard,' he said.
Former OPCC president Niranjan Patnaik also demanded that Governor Hari Babu Kambhampati, Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi and Gajapati Dibyasingha Deb should apologise before Lord Jagannath for the lapses.

Punjab Congress leaders under vigilance scrutiny fear being targeted by AAP-led govt ahead of 2027 polls
CHANDIGARH: With 19 months left till the 2027 assembly elections, the Punjab Congress leadership is apprehensive that the current AAP-led Punjab government might target party leaders who are facing vigilance inquiries. Such concerns have been raised following the arrest of Shiromani Akali Dal leader Bikram Majithia in a drugs and disproportionate assets case, while former Health Minister and AAP MLA Vijay Singla and his OSD Pradeep Kumar were given a clean chit in a corruption case registered against them in 2022. Sources said that a charge sheet has been filed in cases registered against former Congress MLA Kushaldeep Singh Dhillon and former cabinet minister OP Soni. Senior Congress leader Prithviraj Chavan has alleged that a controversy over the 'imposition' of Hindi language in Maharashtra was being created to divert people's attention from core issues and underlined the need to improve the quality of education. Claiming a drastic cut in the budgetary allocation for education, the former Maharashtra chief minister said the focus should be on providing quality education to students and strengthening infrastructure in the educational sector. "The budgetary allocation on education should be increased. The controversies over English and the imposition of Hindi are irrelevant and being created to divert focus from the core issues," Chavan told reporters in Kolhapur on Friday. The former Union minister claimed 41 per cent of posts of teachers in IITs are lying vacant in Maharashtra. "Similarly, 70 per cent of vacancies in agriculture universities are not filled," he said. The language row erupted after the state government last week issued an amended order stating Hindi will "generally" be taught as the third language to students in Marathi and English medium schools from Classes 1 to 5. According to the order, if 20 students per grade in a school wish to study any other Indian language, they can opt out of Hindi. If such a demand arises, either a teacher will be appointed, or the language will be taught online. Opposition parties, however, dubbed the move a default imposition of Hindi as a third language. The controversy has united estranged cousins Uddhav and Raj Thackeray for the cause of the Marathi language. The Shiv Sena (UBT) and MNS will take out a joint morcha in Mumbai on July 5.
