Thailand pushes for lower US tariffs, urges ASEAN unity
Thailand's Department of Information Director-General and Foreign Ministry spokesperson, Nikorndej Balankura, said the government is pushing for a win-win solution.
'We hope the 36 per cent is not final... We certainly hope that we'll get a reduction in the tariff,' he told Bernama.
The US recently announced new tariffs on several Southeast Asian nations, including Malaysia (25 per cent), Indonesia (32 per cent), and Cambodia (36 per cent), while Laos and Myanmar face the highest rate at 40 per cent.
Thailand is adopting a flexible approach in negotiations, including plans to increase US investments.
'We are being flexible on many fronts. We will invest more in the US. And of course, tariff reduction is on the cards,' Nikorndej said.
Beyond trade, Thailand is urging stronger ASEAN cooperation to tackle transnational crime, particularly scam centres affecting victims globally.
'We no longer see it as just a threat to Thailand but as a threat to the sub-region and beyond,' he added.
On Myanmar, Thailand supports Malaysia's ASEAN leadership in implementing the Five-Point Consensus for peace and reaffirmed its stance that any resolution must be Myanmar-led.
Thailand's Foreign Minister, Maris Sangiampongsa, is attending ASEAN meetings in Kuala Lumpur, focusing on economic cooperation, sustainability, and regional security. – Bernama

Over 500 Myanmar soldiers, civilians flee into Thailand after assault by ethnic fighters on military base
BANGKOK, July 12 — More than 500 civilians and soldiers fled conflict in Myanmar and crossed into Thailand on Saturday after an assault by ethnic fighters on a military base, the Thai army said. Myanmar has been mired in civil conflict since a military coup in 2021, with the junta battling a coalition of ethnic armed groups and pro-democracy resistance forces. Saturday's attack by the Karen National Liberation Army (KNLA) targeted a military base in Kayin state at around 3pm local time (4pm Malaysian time), Thailand's military said in a statement. 'The Myanmar soldiers attempted to resist and called for supporting firepower to defend their position but were ultimately unable to hold the line,' it said. One hundred Myanmar soldiers and 467 civilians had crossed into Thailand on Saturday, where Thai military and police disarmed them and provided treatment and humanitarian aid, officials said. Thai forces have ramped up patrols along the border in western Tak province to prevent what officials described as a potential 'violation of sovereignty by foreign armed forces'. Saw Thamain Tun, a leader of the KNLA's political wing, confirmed there had been fighting near the border and said that joint forces had 'seized some front posts' from the army. 'Some (Myanmar troops) defected to our joint forces, but some of them ran into Thailand,' he told AFP. Armed groups from the Karen ethnic minority have long challenged the military and now play a key role in resisting junta control over border zones. Myanmar's civil war has caused huge waves of population displacement, with 81,000 refugees or asylum seekers from the country currently living in Thailand, according to United Nations figures. Anwar says every official visit he undertook was aimed at generating economic returns for the country, and not for leisure as alleged by certain quarters. – Bernama photo KUALA TERENGGANU (July 12): Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has denied that his official visits abroad, including to Brazil to attend the recent BRICS Summit, were merely for 'leisure', but rather as an important effort to establish global economic cooperation. He said every official visit he undertook was aimed at generating economic returns for the country, and not for leisure as alleged by certain quarters. 'We do not travel just for sightseeing. During meetings and engagements, we use every opportunity to meet (with leaders and stakeholders to strengthen relationships and cooperation),' he said when officiating the closing ceremony of the Madani Rakyat Programme (PMR) 2025 in Terengganu today. The Finance Minister said Malaysia's strategic cooperation with Brazil had greatly benefited the country, including Petronas being granted access to the largest oil platform in Brazil. As for the frequency of his and several ministers' attendance at various Asean meetings and negotiations recently, Anwar said these were not merely symbolic but had led to concrete results, including Terengganu being selected as the hub for a new green hydrogen energy initiative.
