‘This heat is extreme': Warning extended as London temperatures soar
'This isn't just the first heat event of the season — it's also an extended one,' said Dave Pavletic, environmental health manager with the Middlesex-London Health Unit. 'That increases risk due to the cumulative impact of extreme heat, especially for seniors, children and people with chronic health issues.'
In response, the City of London has activated its extreme temperature response plan. Four community centres are now operating as cooling centres, offering relief to anyone in need of a break from the heat.

Officials are also urging residents to check in on neighbours, family members and friends, particularly those living alone. Even short exposure to extreme temperatures can be dangerous.
'It's extremely hot, and it's been sustained for a few days,' said Dr. Rodrick Lim, medical director of paediatrics at London Health Sciences Centre. 'We're seeing concerns around heat exhaustion, especially in kids and vulnerable populations who may not be able to express how they're feeling.'
Spray pads across the city remain open, offering a way for families to cool off. But health experts continue to advise the public to stay hydrated, and limit time outdoors during peak afternoon hours.
On a sun-drenched tennis court in London, coach Bill Kovach is still training athlete Kael Paolo but with added precautions.
'They're well supplied with electrolyte water, and it's not new for them to spend time [in the heat],' said Kovach. 'Now, yeah, today is a little more extreme than normal, but we have breaks.'
Paolo is training for a big tournament in Hamilton this weekend, and as an athlete, he's conditioned to spend time in the heat.
The heat warning has been extended through mid-week, as forecast highs hover around 31 degrees with humidex values near 40. Overnight lows are also expected to remain above 20 degrees offering little relief.
As a result, all city sports fields are temporarily closed, and local schools have cancelled outdoor field trips for the next several days.

SWPH no longer providing weekly measles updates
Due to the ongoing pattern of fewer measles cases being reported to the health unit, Southwestern Public Health (SWPH) has decided to conclude publishing its weekly Measles Outbreak Report until further notice. Instead, SWPH is encouraging residents of Elgin County, Oxford County, and the City of St. Thomas to view the weekly measles epidemiology report published by Public Health Ontario. 'The decision to end our local measles dashboard does not mean this outbreak has ended. Instead, we are recommending a provincial source to inform our community as we move through this outbreak response,' said Dr. Ninh Tran, Medical Officer of Health. 'The risk of measles persists for those who are susceptible. Please continue to be vigilant in preventing measles and protecting yourselves and loved ones through vaccination.' The latest measles outbreak report from SWPH on July 17 indicated there have been 759 total cases in the region since October 2024.

(Photo by Kat Hedges) In northern Manitoba, wildfire smoke is widespread. An air quality warning issued by the weather agency remains in effect for several northern regions, extending south into central areas. As precipitation moves out of the south, expect it to be replaced by widespread smoke along a cold front. ECCC says smoke is spreading east and south along the front and expects to issue an air quality warning for Winnipeg by the end of the day on Tuesday. Widespread smoke will continue on Wednesday across most of Manitoba, except for areas furthest into the northeast. Temperatures in Winnipeg will begin to climb again soon, with forecast highs in the mid-20s on Wednesday and Thursday, before heating up close to 30 C on Friday through the weekend. Aside from any smoke, sky conditions will be sunny or a mix of sun and cloud the rest of the week. There is a low chance of showers or thunderstorms on the weekend.
