Samoa Lock In First Semi-final Berth Of 2025 OFC Women's Nations Cup
While Tahiti came into today's first Group A game as the only unbeaten side in the group, being yet to win a game meant that only victory would be enough to secure progression to the semi-finals. For Samoa, meanwhile, just a point was required to make the tournament's top four.
Oteta Kitiona was pulling the strings from midfield for Samoa, teeing up Lilly Dowling for an early warning shot before setting up an early penalty, as she played in Malia Jessop who was then brought down by Vateanui Deane. Ariana Skeers stepped up to coolly convert the resulting penalty and secure an early lead for Samoa.
Kitiona turned goalscorer 12 minutes later after a quick counterattack. Dowling put a tantalizing cross into the Tahitian penalty to Kitiona's feet, initially miscued her shot, but quickly recovered to slot past Camille Andre and double her side's advantage.
Tahiti weren't going down without a fight though, forcing their way back into the game through Tauhere Teore, catching Samoa out after Breanna Kitiona's backpass to Salanoa and Teore spied an opportunity to force the error, pressing the goalkeeper to turn over possession and poke the ball home into the empty net, restoring Tahitian hope as the sides went into half time.
The second half was a more controlled affair, with both sides conscious that any mistakes could change the trajectory of their tournament.
Jessop put the game beyond doubt on the stroke of the second half cooling break. Receiving the ball in midfield, she took advantage of the retreating Tahitian defence to unleash a rocket of a shot that Andre could only get a hand to.
Samoa must now wait for the result of the second Group A game of the day, Cook Islands vs Papua New Guinea, to determine whether they go through to the semi-finals as runners up or group winners.

Photo: World Rugby Manu Samoa rugby team head coach Lemalu Tusiata Pisi says he is working with players who are in the squad for Friday's one-off Test match against Scotland in Auckland. Lemalu, a former Manu Samoa captain, will be missing a number of top players who have club commitments. The current squad will also prepare for the upcoming Pacific Nations Cup series in August, which will also double as a qualifier for the 2027 Rugby World Cup. The Samoans meet Scotland at Eden Park, the game scheduled to kick off at 8.05pm on Friday. Two Flying Fijian players have been named in the combined First Nations and Pasifika squad to face the British and Irish Lions next Tuesday in Melbourne. Prop Mesake Doge and lock Mesake Vocevoce are part of the first First Nations and Pasifika team to meet the touring side. The two were part of the Fijian team that lost to the Wallabies two weekends ago in Sydney and defeated Scotland in Suva last Saturday. The combined First Nations and Pasifika team will be coached by former Wallaby Toutai Kefu. The four semi-finalists in the OFC Women's Nations Cup 2025 have been confirmed, following the completion of pool matches at the weekend. Defending champions Papua New Guinea will meet hosts Fiji in the first semi-final in Suva on Wednesday afternoon. The second match will see Solomon Islands take on Samoa later that evening. Meanwhile, Tonga have claimed seventh position after they defeated Cook Islands 1-0 in the seventh and eighth place play-off Monday. Fiji will host the ICC Women's T20 World Cup EAP Qualifier in September. Matches will be held in Suva and will feature Vanuatu, Papua New Guinea, Indonesia, Japan, Samoa, Cook Islands, Fiji and the Philippines. Fiji is pooled with Indonesia, Cook Islands and Vanuatu. The second pool has PNG, Japan, Samoa and the Philippines pit against each other. The Papua New Guinea Hunters rugby league lost 46-30 to the Central Queensland Capras on Saturday, sending the team out of the top eight in the Hostplus Cup competition. Needing a win to keep their hopes of a play-off berth alive, the Kumuls were left second best as the Capras took control of the game at the end. Capras led 30-8 at halftime.
