Enzo Maresca ‘very proud' as Chelsea book last-eight berth
Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca was proud of his team after beating Benfica in extraordinary, weather-hit circumstances to reach the Club World Cup quarter-finals.
The Blues eventually ran out 4-1 winners after extra-time in a last-16 tie in Charlotte which was suspended for almost two hours due to a thunderstorm.
Chelsea had been just four minutes away from victory following Reece James's stunning free-kick when the players were taken off the field at the Bank of America Stadium.
Benfica benefited from the break and forced extra-time with a controversial Angel Di Maria penalty after play finally resumed.

The game swung back in Chelsea's favour after the Portuguese giants had Gianluca Prestianni sent off and Christopher Nkunku gave them a decisive lead. Breakaway goals from Pedro Neto and Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall wrapped up the win.
Maresca told DAZN: 'I'm very proud. The performance for me was top until the last five minutes when they stopped the game, and when we restarted (it was) a completely a different game.
'When you are inside for more than one hour it's not easy but, 1-1, we continued to play and, at the end, I think the reward was one that we deserve.'
The players were pictured riding exercise bikes and kicking balls in the dressing room during the enforced break.
Maresca said: 'Especially when it's 85 minutes, five minutes to go, it's very difficult.
'But we tried to keep them in the best way we could in that moment and, at the end, we are in the last eight teams here in this competition and we are very happy.'
Chelsea will return to Philadelphia, where they played two group games, to face Brazilian side Palmeiras in the quarter-finals on Friday.
'Now we need to recover players, recover the energy and go again,' said Maresca.
Moises Caicedo delivered an influential performance but will miss the next game after being booked for a second time in the tournament.
Caicedo said of the team's prospects: 'We believe. We know this a tough tournament but, the thing is, we're working hard and doing well. At the end, we're going to see why we (are still) here.'
Reflecting on the weather delay, the Ecuadorian said: 'We were talking in the dressing room. The thing was (to stay) focused the whole game. I'm so happy because we did it.'

The Club World Cup could yet be moved to Qatar as representatives from the country lobby with FIFA to make the switch from America - but it would mean it being held in December Qatar have expressed an interest in hosting the Club World Cup in 2029 after its inaugural showing in the United States this summer - but they would have to move it to the winter. Back in 2022 Qatar held the World Cup, but the climate in their country meant it had to be held in the winter, forcing every domestic league to pause for over a month. But those in the Middle East have put forward a strong sales pitch to FIFA and have claimed they could host a carbon-neutral tournament. The current Club World Cup has involved teams flying all over the United States with venues in 11 different cities. The nine stadiums Qatar built to host the World Cup remain in place. They could be all be utilised with the size of their country meaning they could minimise staging costs and travel for fans, reports the Guardian. Even during the tournament in America, which has lower average temperatures than Qatar, there have been mass complaints over the conditions by the players. The global players' union Fifpro set to address their welfare concerns in a press conference on Monday. It means that any discussion of a Club World Cup in December 2029 in Qatar would result in heavy backlash from the European leagues including the Premier League due to the disruption it would cause to domestic seasons. Jurgen Klopp is among those to criticise the Club World Cup, with his gripes largely centring on player welfare. 'It's a pointless competition,' he said. 'Whoever wins it will be the worst winner of all time because they'll have played all summer and then gone straight back into the league. There are people who have never been involved in the day-to-day business of football and are now coming up with ideas.' He also added: 'It's too many games. I fear next season we will see injuries like never before. If not then, they'll come during or after the Club World Cup. There's no real recovery for those involved, neither physically nor mentally.' Third Viktor Gyokeres boost for Man Utd as striker 'gets listed for £25.6m'
Manchester United have received more good news in their quest to sign Viktor Gyokeres, who looks increasingly likely to leave Sporting CP this summer, as Arsenal look elsewhere Manchester United have received fresh boosts in their quest to sign Viktor Gyokeres this summer. Ruben Amorim, who managed the Swedish striker at Sporting CP, is still looking to add to his attacking options, having already snapped up Matheus Cunha. Despite his relationship with Amorim, Arsenal appeared to be ahead of United in the queue to sign Gyokeres, who has scored an incredible 97 goals in 102 games since signing for the Portuguese giants from Coventry City in 2023. However, the Gunners, who are desperate to land a top-class number nine this summer, may feel compelled to focus on another target, which would be excellent news for United. Benjamin Sesko could be a more realistic target and a cheaper option after RB Leipzig dropped their asking price from £68million-£85m to around £59.7m, according to German outlet Bild. With the Gunners looking elsewhere, United could have an opportunity to swoop and make a statement signing ahead of Amorim's first full season. And in a fresh boost for United, Sporting appear to be making plans for life after Gyokeres, who is at odds with the club over his price tag. With their star striker's future up in the air, the Lisbon side have reportedly set their sights on Union Saint-Gilloise striker Franjo Ivanovic as a potential replacement. Per Sporting have lodged a bid of around £17m, which is short of the Belgian champions' valuation of £25.6m. Besiktas and Frankfurt, plus clubs in Italy, are also said to be interested in Ivanovic, who netted 20 goals for the Belgian champions last season. Sporting landing a striker with a strong goalscoring record for less than £30m may also help United in their negotiations for Gyokeres, who is at odds with the Sporting hierarchy over his price tag. It had been reported that the player believes he has a verbal agreement with the club whereby he can be sold for a fee worth £59m. Sporting president Frederico Varandas has denied that such an arrangement exists but has confirmed that the club did promise the 27-year-old they would not hold out for the full value stated in the release clause, believed to be almost £85m. And in a fresh boost to United this weekend, Varandas admitted that there is a "strong likelihood" Gyokeres will leave the club this summer and for a possible discounted fee. He said: "Sporting is calm regarding this matter. Secondly, Sporting does not need to sell Viktor Gyokeres. Fortunately, we have moved past the phase of selling our main asset. "However, we remain sensitive to Viktor's dreams or those of any other athlete. Sporting has made a commitment that, after weeks of meetings, we will not demand the full amount of the clause; we will be reasonable regarding the amount requested for Viktor. "Today, there is a strong likelihood that he will leave. I won't disclose the amount, but the player knows what it is. I can say that Viktor will not leave for 60+10m. He won't leave, absolutely not. "In recent weeks, we have been paying attention. I saw a player, [Martin] Zubimendi, who is six months younger than Viktor, go [potentially to Arsenal] for 65m, and I saw Matheus Cunha move to Manchester United for around 75m euros [£62.5m. We are talking about players who are 26 years old. I believe Viktor could leave, unless he has the worst agent in the world, which I don't believe, as his agent is one of the best in the world."
