Baby elephant at the Sedgwick County Zoo – it's a boy!
This marks an exciting milestone for the institution. The calf was born to mother Talia on Thursday, and both mother and baby are doing well.
The calf's name is Bomani, which means 'warrior' in Swahili.
'We are overjoyed to welcome this precious new addition to our Zoo family,' Scott Newland, Sedgwick County Zoo president and CEO, said in a news release. 'This birth is a significant moment for the Zoo and serves as a symbol of hope for the future of African elephants in our North American population.'

Zookeepers say Bomani stood up in the first few minutes after being born. He is already exploring his surroundings under the watchful eyes of his mother and the rest of the herd.
The mother and baby will be kept behind the scenes while the zoo's veterinary and elephant care teams monitor for bonding, nursing and positive herd behaviors.
This is Sedgwick County Zoo's first successful elephant birth. It had been preparing for the birth of five elephant calves, but last month, one of the pregnancies ended in a stillbirth.
The three other expectant elephants, Xolani, Arusi, and Zuberi, are all pregnant with their first offspring and are due between spring and fall.

The zoo says the pregnancies are the result of years of careful planning and effort to establish a successful breeding program, which is aligned with the Association of Zoos and Aquariums African elephant Species Survival Plan to support the health and sustainability of African elephant populations.
'The arrival of this calf is a celebration of the vital work we do to protect endangered species,' Newland said. 'We hope the public will be inspired to learn more about African elephants and the challenges they face, and be part of the solution to help protect them for generations to come.'

In June, my 104-year-old mother-in-law got a new battery for her cardiac pacemaker. A battery's typical life is 10 years, so you get an idea of her resilience. Mollie Ford is a " SuperAger," meaning she has impressive memory function and word recall. Mollie was born in England on March 8, 1921, and was adopted at five months. As an only child, her parents took her to Nairobi, Africa, and she learned to speak Swahili. At 7, she returned to England and was enrolled in boarding school, where she actively played music and sports. Sometime, during the next four years, she met her older cousin, Frank, whom she eventually married. The couple moved to Haifa and baptised their firstborn child in Israel. In 1953, the family sailed across the ocean to make a home in Canada. Decades later, she became my mother-in-law, and I've had the opportunity to get to know her over the years. Recently, she shared her tips for living long and staying sharp with me. Everything in moderation Mollie told me she loves chocolate, but she has the willpower to restrict herself to only one square each evening with her cup of tea. It's impressive. The same is true of her one glass of wine (pinot grigio) with dinner. She eats slowly and consumes fish, colorful vegetables, assorted nuts, and fruit for snacks. Mollie eats slowly and in moderation. In her 80s, Mollie joined a gym to exercise a bit beside much younger people and took up clog dancing. She even tried the rowing machine, but decided it wasn't for her. Every morning, she tended her garden, fed a special mix to the birds, and offered apples to the deer who visited her. Though she can't be physical anymore, Mollie still loves being out in nature. We try to slow down to feel it with her. Brain function: use it or lose it An avid reader, Mollie sped her way through books at twice my speed. Her love of historical fiction, a good story, and characters she understood made her hungry for more. Neighbors, friends, and family shared favorite books. Mollie always read, despite whatever was happening around her. I've tried and failed to have such deep concentration. Sudoku and crosswords were her daily mental challenges. Mollie had an impressive vocabulary and credited crosswords. She worked on them so often that she began understanding the creators' patterns. Her speedy completion was impressive. Mollie also played piano on special occasions at her church for decades and was an active member of the handbell choir. These days, whenever she hears a moving piece of classical music, her eyes close and her hands conduct. Connections matters Mollie was a born leader who always organized church bazaars, family trips, and celebrations. I never knew her to procrastinate, and she was an impressive planner. Thanks to Nana, our families went on two cruises that created forever memories. When I asked Mollie the reason for her longevity, she answered without a beat: family. She's proud of all of us and still stays up-to-date with our accomplishments. Today, Mollie lives in a senior care facility because she's had a couple of falls and some memory loss. She shares a room with three other women, a testimony to her generous spirit. She still lives on the west coast of Canada, where the ocean's breeze and fresh air support her mind and body. Her legacy continues to enrich our lives.

Emancipation Day talk to highlight Haldimand's Black history
Free on Friday? Heritage Haldimand invites the public to an Emancipation Day gathering that explores Haldimand County's ties to the Underground Railroad. Emancipation Day refers to the declaration of the end of slavery in the British Empire in 1834. In the United States, some African-Americans fleeing slavery took refuge in Canfield, a hamlet in Haldimand where Black and European settlers lived harmoniously, according to local historian Sylvia Weaver. 'Canfield was a special place,' Weaver told The Spectator in an earlier interview. She described how Black, Scottish and Irish inhabitants 'worked side by side' to clear the land. 'They lived together, went to school together, went to church together,' Weaver said. 'They were all equal and they got along.' The story of one of Ontario's oldest Black settlements is told in ' Canfield Roots, ' a documentary by Haldimand filmmaker Graeme Bachiu. Friday's free Emancipation Day event runs from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Canfield Community Hall at 50 Talbot Rd. The centrepiece of the program is a talk by historian Rochelle Bush, a descendant of Samuel Cooper, the first Black settler to make Haldimand his new home. Bush will tell stories of the Cooper and Street families, some of whom are buried in a historic cemetery in Canfield for Haldimand's earliest Black settlers. In an earlier interview, Bush said the African-Americans who came north to Canfield were authors of their own liberation and should be referred to as 'freedom seekers' rather than runaway or escaped slaves. 'They were self-emancipated (and) found their way to British soil, where they could find freedom,' Bush said. Haldimand's fourth annual Emancipation Day celebration 'serves as an opportunity to reflect on the history of slavery in Canada, acknowledge the contributions of Black Canadians and address ongoing systemic anti-Black racism,' the county said in a press release.
