EFL club issues update after fan taken to hospital by air ambulance before clash
Notts County have issued an update on the fan who was taken to hospital by air ambulance after falling ill ahead of their game against Newport County on Saturday. The incident occurred less than an hour before kick off at Rodney Parade in Newport.
Two air ambulances landed on the pitch and the game eventually started at 4pm after the fan had been transported to hospital. And Notts County have now revealed that the supporter is in a "serious but stable condition".
In a post on social media, the club wrote: "A Notts fan who was taken ill before today's game is in a serious but stable condition in hospital. We will provide further updates when appropriate and we continue to send our thoughts and best wishes to the supporter and their family."
The fan was taken to University Hospital of Wales in Cardiff, with Wales Air Ambulance saying in a statement: "I can confirm that two Wales Air Ambulance crews attended a medical emergency at Rodney Parade in Newport this afternoon (August 2, 2025), the first arriving on scene 2:22pm."
The game ended 1-1 after it eventually kicked off, with Gerard Garner giving Newport the lead before Jodi Jones equalised for Notts County from the penalty spot. "We don't know the full details yet, but we know it's someone associated with our football club so we wish him and his family all the best," Notts County boss Martin Paterson said after the game.
"It just puts things into perspective. We as a football club were willing to wait as long as we had to so that the supporter was taken care of."
Newport manager David Hughes added: "Everyone's thoughts are with the individual who was involved in the medical emergency. Him and his family are in everyone's thinking."

Reflecting on the result, Paterson said: "At half-time I was disappointed not to be one or two goals to the good, with some of our play and the clear-cut chances that we created. But football owes you absolutely nothing.
"You have to take those chances because you leave yourself open for certain styles to hurt you. We conceded a set-play goal that was very avoidable and we had to have a reaction to get a goal back.
"I'm disappointed not to win the game, but if teams play in a certain manner and are effective with it there's nothing wrong with that – we can't complain, we just have to be better at being us."

Man United find possible solution to land battle to prevent delays to 100,000-seater new stadium project and new squad cost rules gather pace
Manchester United 's land battle with Freightliner rumbles on, but the club have a chance to ensure it does not delay their plans for a 100,000-capacity new home. Last month, Mail Sport revealed how the Premier League giants were miles apart from the owners of the rail terminal — which adjoins Old Trafford and is key to the project — over their valuation of the land. United sources, who believe the land is worth £40million, feel the company are attempting to cash in with a significantly higher valuation, and one solution could be a compulsory purchase order. However, Inside Sport understands United could acquire a portion of the land, which would allow them to build the stadium, then buy the rest down the line. United are hoping to be in their new home PSR OUT? PLANS to replace existing financial rules with a Squad Cost Ratio (SCR) — where the amount clubs can spend on wages and transfers is limited to a percentage of their revenue — appear to be gathering pace. Championship clubs will vote on Monday on whether to introduce mandatory reporting — which would force teams to submit financial information so the EFL can assess the potential effect of replacing profit and sustainability rules with SCR. The latter has already been adopted by UEFA. Championship clubs can currently lose up to £39m over a three-year period. EFL RECEIVE APOLOGY Sheffield Wednesday's supporters' trust have apologised to the EFL for making derogatory remarks about the organisation during a meeting of fans last week. The two groups have met recently to discuss the developing crisis at Wednesday under the ownership of Thai businessman Dejphon Chansiri. As Mail Sport reported, there are concerns Sunday's season opener at Leicester City could be under threat, although club sources are confident it will go ahead. Tensions are understandably high, and it is to be hoped a solution is found as soon as possible for an institution of English football. PREMIER LEAGUE AND PFA BLASTED Football Families for Justice (FFJ) — the campaign group calling on the sport to tackle its dementia crisis — have blasted a report released by the PFA and Premier League into the impact of the Football Brain Health Fund. The document hails the achievements of the fund, which has seen £2.3million allocated to 153 families since its launch in September 2023. John Stiles — son of World Cup winner Nobby, who died after a battle with dementia — described it as 'shameful'. 'The shocking report confirms the fund will only provide care after the player and family have secured whatever can be provided by the local authority and NHS, meaning the taxpayer and the players and families will generally pay for the care they need,' the former Leeds and Doncaster man said. 'The report is sly, smug and superficial. To have spent under £670,000 on care home costs over the two years is an appalling failure bearing in mind the refusal of the fund to provide the requisite care to the likes of Gordon McQueen, Jimmy Robson, Joe Kinnear, Chris Nicholl and many other very vulnerable ex-players. 'It is staggering to see (PFA chair) Maheta Molango's annual salary of £650,000 is only slightly less than the amount spent on care home costs over two years.' FFJ's campaign has secured assurances of support from the Prime Minister and Lisa Nandy, Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport. QATAR SHAKE UP 2036 RACE QATAR caught their Indian rivals — and the International Olympic Committee — off guard with the announcement of their bid to host the 2036 Olympics. Qatar are clearly keen for a competitive race, like the good old days when London and Paris duked it out for the 2012 Olympics. Since then, the IOC have attempted to control the bid process, moving it from an election to a selection — which hurt Qatar's previous bid. But with new IOC boss Kirsty Coventry's commitment to review the process, Qatar seem keen to set the agenda, and will be a force to be reckoned with for India and any other bidders.

Liverpool urged to sign ex-Arsenal transfer target to replace Luis Diaz
Premier League champions Liverpool have been urged to sign ex-Arsenal transfer target Rodrygo from Real Madrid as a replacement for Luis Diaz. Real Madrid are reported to be open to selling the Brazil international this summer and have slapped an €100m (£86m) price tag on the winger. Arsenal have long been linked to the 24-year-old star, although they've somewhat cooled their interest to focus on a deal for Eberechi Eze. After Liverpool sold Diaz to Bayern Munich for £65.5m earlier this week, Jermaine Pennant has advised Arne Slot's side to recruit Rodrygo. Wake up to find news on your club in your inbox every morning with Metro's Football Newsletter. Sign up to our newsletter and then select your team in the link we'll send you so we can get football news tailored to you. 'Liverpool are in the business of signing world-class players,' the former Liverpool winger told Adventure Gamers. 'Real Madrid's Rodrygo looks a fantastic option to replace [Luis Diaz]. 'He's not some young, unstudied talent – he's an experienced and established player as it is and watching him over the years has been exciting. 'He's quick, powerful, direct and very tricky to defend against and you could even say he fits a similar profile to Diaz. 'It'd be a like-for-like replacement and a transfer that I could see the fans really getting behind.' Pennant has also shared his thoughts on Hugo Ekitike, who joined Liverpool in a deal worth an initial £69m from Eintracht Frankfurt this summer. Pennant says that Ekitike reminds him of Alexander Isak – another striker who Liverpool have tried to sign from Newcastle United ahead of the new season – with a £110m bid rejected by the Magpies. 'I think Hugo Ekitike is certainly good enough to be Liverpool's starting number nine this season in the Premier League,' Pennant added. More Trending 'He's got good feet and has a similar stature and style to that of Alexander Isak, it remains to be seen whether he'll be able to put the same kind of numbers up, though. 'He's a good player and with regards to the price tag, it'll only be the maximum number (£79m) if he hits the heights the club has set for him. 'If he does, then it's definitely money well spent. Liverpool will save on a small amount in add-ons if some of those targets aren't reached. 'I think it's a top signing in this window, you can't get a top striker in the current market for under £60-70 million, I'm excited to see how he does.' Hearts will soon compete in their first match of the 2025/26 season as they prepare to welcome Aberdeen to Tynecastle. The Jambos have enjoyed several successful outings in recent weeks, beating Sunderland 3-0 in a pre-season friendly, and enjoying Scottish League Cup wins over Dumbarton, Stirling Albion and Hamilton. Hibs' season started at Dundee and they also have a European juggling act to manage. Here is the latest news from Hearts' Scottish Premiership rivals ahead of the 2025/26 season... Ross County star in EFL and SPFL battle Ronan Hale is the subject of much interest from around EFL and SPFL clubs The Belfast-born forward has, however, also been of huge interest to a number of other EFL clubs, including Luton Town, Reading FC and Wycombe Wanderers. Hale enjoyed an excellent campaign for Ross County last season, scoring 15 goals in 38 outings. It was, however, ultimately not enough to stop the Staggies' relegation but his efforts have attracted attention from around the football leagues with a 'bidding war' reported to be unfolding. Kilmarnock sign ex-Arsenal player Hearts rivals Kilmarnock have announced Dominic Thompson as their latest acquisition. Taking to the club's website, it was said: 'The left back has experience in both English and Scottish football and will be available for selection against Livingston this afternoon. Welcome, Dominic!' The left-back's career started with Arsenal, progressing through the Hale End Academy before he signed with Brentford in 2019. In 2022, he departed the Bees, joining Blackpool with whom he was with until heading north of the border earlier this year. He made 15 appearances for Motherwell before his contract expired this summer and he was able to join Kilmarnock on a free transfer. Pundits embroiled in Hearts debate Sky Sports pundits Charlie Adam and Kris Boyd came to blows in heated debate when discussing how soon we could see Hearts challenging the Old Firm for the title. Speaking on The Warm-up, while Charlie Adam believes that the 'pool and power' of the Old Firm squads will keep them far from their fellow Scottish Premiership sides for the foreseeable future, Kris Boyd was adamant that it may only be a few years until Hearts push for that trophy. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad Chris Sutton asked Adam and Boyd that when taking into consideration Tony Bloom's investment in the Tynecastle side, how likely is a Hearts top place finish to which Adam said: 'I don't think so. Because of the financial power of Rangers and Celtic.' 'I still think that the pool and power of the quality of players Rangers and Celtic get, I don't see anyone getting in between the. I think the two clubs are too far ahead. You can have analytics, looking at data of the players - do you think Rangers and Celtic are not looking at analytics of players? Of course they are.' Boyd, however, was vehemently opposed to this view, confidently saying: 'Do I think it's possible for Hearts in a few years? Yeah, I do.'
