UK PM Urges British Businesses to Invest in Morocco's Southern Provinces

Morocco World30-04-2025

Rabat — Morocco's southern provinces are attracting more international investment interest, as the UK's parliament member Liam Fox urged British companies to seize investment opportunities in the region.
The UK official also spoke of the assets that the North African country has, particularly in its southern provinces, recalling Morocco's strategic geographical location in North Africa.
Speaking to Morocco's official news agency, MAP, on the sidelines of Innovation Zero World energy conference in London Fox said that 'British companies looking for partnerships should take a closer look at what Morocco has to offer, particularly in the Kingdom's southern provinces.'
The world's leading energy transition event provided a platform for Moroccan leaders from its southern provinces to exhibit the regions' economic resources and display the development that had been made.
Speaking of Morocco's participation at the London conference, Fox said it is an opportunity to promote a positive image of the country's southern provinces to attract more investments.
Among the region's top investment attractions, Fox mentioned Dakhla-Atlantic port, which has increasingly become a draw for business opportunities, as well as environmental projects, particularly in the realm of renewable energy.
Morocco is a gateway to Africa, he noted, adding that political stability, as well as its natural resources, makes the country an attractive economic hub to host foreign investments.
These ingredients provide an atmosphere of smooth-running business activities in the North African country.
Southern provinces development
A key fascet of Morocco's Development Model is advancing its southern provinces and leveling up their contribution to the socio-economic dynamic, therefore creating jobs and investment opportunities, and providing the region with the infrastructure and facilities it needs.
A large budget has been put towards this endeavor – estimated to be around MAD 77 billion ($7.1 billion).
The new Dakhla Atlantic port $3.3 billion project that the UK prime minister mentioned is just one of the key parts of Morocco's broader socio-economic development strategy for the region, with the Tiznit-Dakhla highway as another crucial component, among others. Morocco Commemorates 56th Anniversary of Sidi Ifni Liberation

Rabat — The Moroccan people celebrate today the 56th anniversary of Sidi Ifni's liberation, a crucial milestone in the country's complete independence and territorial unity. On June 30, 1969, the resistance of the local tribes of Ait Baamrane forced foreign occupation forces to withdraw from this coastal city, ending decades of colonial presence. A legacy of resistance The High Commissioner for former resistance fighters and former members of the Liberation Army issued a statement honoring the historic day, recalling popular uprisings that swept across the Atlas Mountains, the Rif region, and throughout Morocco after the French imposed the protectorate treaty on March 30, 1912. Local tribes in the Ait Baamrane region demonstrated a remarkable fighting spirit during the colonial period. They courageously resisted foreign expansion attempts and fought numerous heroic battles, sacrificing everything to preserve Morocco's unity and defend its religious sanctuaries and national principles. Sidi Ifni's strategic role in liberation Sidi Ifni played a pivotal role in Morocco's liberation struggle, harboring resistance cells and guerrilla organizations led by brave fighters who gained fame battling colonial forces. The city served as a training ground for resistance fighters and members of the Liberation Army, producing exceptional heroes who dedicated their lives to defending their homeland's freedom and unity. Dakhla : Cornered, pro-Polisario forces turn to minors for protests

Last night, a group of young people waving Polisario flags held a demonstration, calling for «an end to the occupation and the release of Sahrawi civilian prisoners held in Moroccan prisons», according to the Polisario news agency SPS on Sunday, June 29. «A few teenagers, some with their faces covered, took to the streets carrying Polisario flags», a local source in Dakhla told Yabiladi. Images shared by Polisario media, including SPS, show minors protesting on a street in the city. «This is clearly a propaganda stunt orchestrated by the Polisario to coincide with recent conferences in Europe and articles in certain Spanish outlets calling for the release of Sahrawi prisoners convicted of the murder of 11 law enforcement officers during the dismantling of the Gdim Izik camp in Laayoune on November 8, 2008», the same source added. Polisario-affiliated media made no mention of any arrests following the demonstration in Dakhla.

Morocco : Without the PJD, members of the Pan-Arab-Islamist Congress support Iran

Moroccan figures affiliated with the Pan-Arab-Islamic Congress have voiced unequivocal support for Iran in its recent confrontation with Israel. In a statement released on Sunday following their meeting on Saturday, June 28, they strongly «condemned the brutal Zionist and American aggression against the Islamic Republic of Iran», calling it a «blatant violation of international law and a dangerous escalation that threatens the security and stability of the region». The Moroccan members of the Congress, founded in 1996, also «hailed Iran's firm and determined response», claiming it sent «a clear message that such attacks will not go unpunished» and demonstrated that «the Axis of Resistance now possesses new deterrence strategies that challenge the calculations of the Zionist entity». The statement makes no mention of the Iranian missile strikes that targeted Qatar, a U.S. ally. It is signed by Mohamed Hamdaoui, representing the Islamist current and a prominent figure within Al Adl wal Ihsane, and Abdessamad Belkebir, a member of the Congress's Monitoring Committee and a former member of the OADP (Organization of Popular Democratic Action), founded by the late Bensaid Aït Idder. Several well-known pro-Palestinian activists also took part in the June 28 meeting, including Khalid Sefiani, Secretary General of the Pan-Arab-Islamic Congress and coordinator of the National Action Group for Palestine, and Ahmed Ouihmane, president of the Moroccan Observatory Against Normalization. The Justice and Development Party (PJD) was notably absent. The party's participation in the Pan-Arab-Islamic Congress was suspended following its endorsement of the resumption of diplomatic ties between Morocco and Israel, announced on December 10, 2020. In fact, the National Action Group for Palestine also suspended the PJD from its ranks after then-Prime Minister and PJD Secretary General Saad-Eddine El Othmani signed the Joint Declaration between Morocco, the United States, and Israel in Rabat on December 22, 2020, in the presence of King Mohammed VI. Since returning to the party's leadership in October 2021, Abdelilah Benkirane has repeatedly called for the severing of diplomatic relations with Israel.
