MARTA Selects CDM Smith to Design the Largest Bus Rapid Transit System in the State of Georgia
MARTA, a metro system in Georgia, has selected CDM Smith to design the largest bus rapid transit system in the state.
Atlanta, May 30, 2025 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- CDM Smith was selected by the Metropolitan Atlanta Rapid Transit Authority (MARTA) to design the Clayton County Southlake Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) Alignment and Airport Connectivity project. CDM Smith and its partners will design approximately 15 miles of BRT with an elevated guideway into Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport. The effort is MARTA's largest BRT project to date.
This project will greatly improve Clayton County residents' access to job opportunities and education and will open doors for further transit-oriented development in the area. Direct premium transit service to the Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport and MARTA's rail system will greatly contribute to the local and regional economies. Planning and design work is funded by the one-cent sales tax approved by Clayton County voters in 2014. The project has submitted an application for a Small Starts grant award from the Federal Transit Administration's Capital Investment Grants (CIG) program. The current project budget is $355.6 million.
In service of its goal to provide premium transit service throughout the county, the BRT system design will include an elevated guideway, elevated bus stations, and a pedestrian bridge connector to the airport terminal and MARTA train station. The design phase of this project will take two years to complete. Construction is estimated to take place from 2028 through 2030.

Micro grant program launched for Denver businesses affected by BRT construction on Colfax Avenue
As construction continues on East Colfax Avenue, Walter McDonald waits and watches. "We're doing okay, we're getting by," he told CBS News Colorado. "But other businesses, you can really see that it can shut them down." His tattoo shop, Lifetime Tattoo, has been in business on the stretch just past Lafayette Street and Colfax Avenue for 24 years. But now he's seeing the effects of the Bus Rapid Transit, or "BRT," construction on businesses and neighbors. "[The disruption is] definitely on par with COVID in terms of the impact it's had on our business," McDonald said. Walter McDonald, owner of Lifetime Tattoos in Denver, talks about the impact on business the ongoing construction on the Bus Rapid Transit system is having. CBS Earlier in 2025, the city of Denver unveiled grant applications to help businesses impacted by the construction. Among the various criteria to be eligible for up to $15,000 per business, owners had to prove that they suffered a 20% loss or higher directly tied to the road work. CBS Colorado talked to many business owners who expressed concerns that the city was trying to disprove the impacts more than they were trying to help the businesses that were hurting. The Colfax Ave Business Improvement District has been working closely with owners up and down the strip. Denon Moore, business support director for the district and a Colfax Avenue business owner herself, told CBS Colorado that they've rolled out a program of microgrants entirely funded by private sources to be able to provide individual businesses with somewhere between $500 and $1,500 to those who need it. Unlike the city grants, a business would have to prove a 10% loss directly tied to the impacts. Denon Moore, business support director for the Colfax Ave Business Improvement District, talks about grants being offered to business owners along Colfax Avenue to help offset the hit they've experienced during construction of the Bus Rapid Transit system. CBS "We think of it as a tool," Moore said. "They can put $1,500 towards a project to stimulate sales for some type of promotion. I'm on the street every day speaking with operators. I don't think it's hard for many of them to see a 10% loss has occurred." The micro grants could serve a variety of purposes, Moore said. It could be seed money for projects or marketing campaigns to drum up business or add another revenue stream. They could also be used as a stopgap for a bill or unexpected expense that an owner already on the margins due to construction could absorb. McDonald is thankful for the grants but worries it might be too little, too late. The impacts have already been significant, with some businesses announcing they will be shutting down directly due to the BRT construction. "But the lack of foresight, the lack of planning on the impact to small businesses is unbelievable." As Moore and the district continue to try and find ways to help their neighbors, while others like McDonald aim to survive and keep Colfax's culture alive in a post-construction era. Private companies could shell out billions for new express lanes on GA 400
Over the next couple of weeks, parts of GA 400 will see occasional lane and shoulder closures as the Georgia Department of Transportation sets the stage for future construction on express lanes. The new express lanes, which Channel 2 Action News first told you about in August, will run 16 miles from the North Springs MARTA station into Forsyth County. Two lanes in each direction will run from the North Springs MARTA station to McGinnis Ferry Road, and one lane in each direction will run from McGinnis Ferry to just north of McFarland Parkway. But GDOT tells Channel 2's Michael Doudna says any closures you see in that area for now are part of its planning stages. Some single lanes have been closed nightly for the last week as workers do Geotech work to plan ahead. Under the current plan, private companies would cover the $4.6 billion construction cost, pay $4 billion to the state and cover maintenance. In exchange, they would get 50 years of the Peach Pass user fees for those lanes. 'When motorists choose to use the express lane system, then it frees up space in the managed lanes, so it frees up space for all users,' GDOT spokesperson Natalie Dale said. If private companies shell out $8.6 billion for construction and payments to the state, they'll need to get $172 million a year for each of the 50 years they would get Peach Pass fees to recoup their money. The low-fare airline launched six new routes from Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport (ATL) on June 12 and 13, including twice-weekly flights to Jacksonville, Fort Myers and Palm Beach, the company said in a release.
