Woman arrested after Pride, Every Child Matters flags vandalized on Eastern Shore

CBC09-04-2025
Nova Scotia RCMP have arrested a 64-year-old woman from Dartmouth following a "hate-motivated crime" involving vandalized Pride and Every Child Matters flags in Lower Ship Harbour late last month.
In a news release, police said they received a report of mischief at a residential property on West Ship Harbour Road on March 25.
"The mischief is considered to be motivated by hate based on race, national or ethnic origin, sexual orientation, gender identity and expression," the release said Wednesday.
In an earlier release on March 31 about the same incident, police said a Pride flag and an Every Child Matters flag located at the end of a driveway had been vandalized.
The Pride flag is associated with the 2SLGBTQ+ community and the Every Child Matter flag acknowledges the harm caused by residential schools to Indigenous children.
Police arrested a suspect on April 6. She will be facing a charge of mischief. She has since been released and is scheduled to appear in Dartmouth provincial court on May 12.

B.C. wildfire was sparked by RCMP vehicle ‘failure'

A CPKC firefighting train sits on the tracks above the village of Lytton, B.C., on Tuesday, June 25, 2024. Mayor Denise O'Connor shared an update on the rebuilding progress Tuesday, ahead of the third anniversary of the fire that destroyed 90 per cent of the community. (Darryl Dyck / The Canadian Press) Mounties in British Columbia say a wildfire that has prompted evacuation orders and alerts near the village of Lytton was sparked by an RCMP vehicle. The Izman Creek fire was discovered Tuesday after 'an equipment failure of an RCMP trailer resulted in the accidental ignition,' Staff Sgt. Kris Clark said in an emailed statement Thursday. 'It appears that the right side wheel ejected from the trailer ultimately causing a fire in the grass-filled ditch,' Clark added. 'The officer stopped to engage the flames with their issued fire extinguisher but the conditions were not favourable and they were unable contain the fire.' This is a developing story. SiRT investigates after male allegedly suffered fractured elbow during arrest in Cole Harbour, N.S.

The waiting area of the Serious Incident Response Team, the province's independent police watchdog agency, is seen in Halifax on Wednesday, April 18, 2018. The Serious Incident Response Team (SiRT) is investigating a matter involving a serious injury sustained by an adult male during an arrest in Cole Harbour, N.S. The RCMP responded to a residential call in Cole Harbour on the afternoon of June 26. An adult male, who was no longer welcome on the property, refused to leave. He resisted arrest and was taken to the ground by police. SiRT say the male complained of back and elbow pain and was brought to the hospital where he was diagnosed with a fractured elbow. 'Due to the serious injury sustained by the male, SiRT has assumed responsibility for this investigation,' a news release said. For more Nova Scotia news, visit our dedicated provincial page

Judge denies bail for 2 men accused of looting during wildfire evacuation in La Ronge, Sask.

Two men accused of looting in La Ronge, Sask., during the recent wildfire evacuation last month are staying in jail. The men were arrested near Waskesiu on June 4 in a stolen SUV. RCMP recovered a stolen laptop, parcels and a crowbar. The items traced back to La Ronge, which was under an evacuation order as the Pisew wildfire tore through the surrounding forest. Both men were denied bail when they appeared in provincial court. At the June 19 hearing for one of the men, judge Steven Schiefner said the alleged thefts undercut the emergency evacuation system. "These people were vulnerable," he said. People are willing to leave their homes because they believe that their property is safe from thieves, Schiefner said. Should they doubt that and stay behind, they are at risk and distract emergency workers who must then account for them. "It was brazen, it happened during a time when there was an evacuation order, and most [people had complied with that order and, in fact, had been evacuated," Schiefner said. "Their conduct, it's alleged, injured at least two sets of victims, both the owner of the house and the SUV." Schiefner said he'd gotten correspondence from the mayor La Ronge who indicated "releasing them is not acceptable." "This is brazen conduct that shocks the sensibilities of the public. There are no [release] conditions that I could come up with that are sufficient," he said. "I simply cannot release you."
