At 36 years old and just recovering from hand surgery, Russell Westbrook has made a surprising announcement: he's choosing to opt out of his $3.4 million player option with the Denver Nuggets and will enter unrestricted free agency on June 30.
After putting up a decent 13.3 points, 6.1 assists, and 4.9 rebounds across 75 games last season—and having surgery to fix two fractures in his right hand Westbrook is heading into the offseason with some serious leverage.
How Westbrook's 13.3 PPG and bench leadership reshape his free agency narrative
In his inaugural season with the Nuggets, Westbrook recorded 13.3 points, 6.1 assists, and 4.9 rebounds in 75 games (36 of which were starts), shooting 44.9% from the field. He suffered a broken right hand late in the season and had successful surgery to mend two fractures, yet he still played throughout the playoffs.
Although he's not the triple-double powerhouse he used to be, he proved to be efficient, resilient, and a valuable veteran presence as Denver's sixth man and occasional starter.
For many veterans, turning down guaranteed money isn't the norm—especially for someone still earning the lowest salary of his 17-year career. However, Westbrook seems to be motivated by factors beyond just his paycheck. He's seeking more freedom, a significant role, and maybe even a chance to win his first NBA championship.

As June 30 gets closer, he faces a choice: return to Denver, likely at the veteran minimum, or look for a more substantial role in the market.
His decision to opt-out has opened up a lot of cap flexibility; the Nuggets are currently around $10.6 M beneath the second salary cap apron, which gives them access to the $5.7 M taxpayer mid-level exception and veteran minimum slots. This allows Denver to chase after affordable veterans or seek trade assets without entering the expensive luxury tax bracket.
With big contracts already in play for Nikola Jokic, Jamal Murray, Michael Porter Jr.
, and Aaron Gordon, moving on from Westbrook's contract was a tactical choice.
With no restrictions as a free agent on June 30, Westbrook's future is completely open. He's likely looking for a one-year veterans-minimum deal with playoff teams that need backcourt playmaking and leadership. Meanwhile, Denver has to find a way to replace his scoring off the bench Jalen Pickett is now the only backup point guard left and they could either sign two veterans at the minimum or make a trade to enhance their depth.
Russell Westbrook's choice to turn down his player option goes beyond finances—it's a declaration. Fresh off hand surgery, with a great season in scoring and assists, along with key playoff performances, he's taking a chance on himself one last time.

For the Denver Nuggets, this is a well-planned financial reset. With free agency starting on June 30, all attention will be on Westbrook's next destination and if this new phase will finally lead him to the championship ring he's been after.

IND vs ENG 4th Test: Wayward Indian bowling allows England to fester; reach 225/2 at stumps

Zak Crawley (84) and Ben Duckett (94) stitched a 166-run opening wicket partnership on Day 2 of the fourth Test between India and England at Old Trafford in Manchester. (Image: X) England established control on Day 2 of the fourth Test against India at Manchester, reaching 225 for two at stumps on Thursday, powered by Ben Duckett 's aggressive 94 and Zak Crawley 's 84. Earlier, India posted 358 in their first innings, highlighted by an inspiring 54 from Rishabh Pant, who batted with a broken foot . Duckett and Crawley put on a commanding 166-run opening partnership off 192 balls, effectively neutralising India's bowling attack. The duo scored at nearly five runs per over, taking advantage of wayward bowling from the Indian pacers. Go Beyond The Boundary with our YouTube channel. SUBSCRIBE NOW! India's pace trio of Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Siraj, and debutant Anshul Kamboj struggled to maintain accuracy, frequently offering loose deliveries on the leg side. The England openers capitalised on these opportunities, particularly Duckett, who scored freely. Kamboj, who joined the squad as a late replacement due to injuries, managed to claim his first Test wicket by dismissing Duckett. The length delivery that got extra bounce resulted in a catch behind the wickets. Shardul Thakur's expensive bowling spell added to India's difficulties, with England's batters facing more favourable batting conditions under sunshine compared to India's innings under overcast skies. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like My 4-year-old kidneys are failing, only you can help Donate For Health Donate Now Undo In the earlier part of the day, Ben Stokes claimed his first five-wicket haul in eight years as England bowled out India for 358. The morning session saw India resume at 264 for four, with conditions favouring the seamers. Jofra Archer struck early, removing the in-form Ravindra Jadeja for 20. The delivery shaped away from leg stump, taking the outside edge with Harry Brook completing a low catch at second slip. Shardul Thakur showed attacking intent during his 41-run innings, including impressive boundaries off Chris Woakes and Ben Stokes. However, Stokes eventually dismissed him with a clever delivery that induced a catch to Ben Duckett at gully. How and why Rishabh Pant's England tour could come to an abrupt end due to toe fracture The most remarkable moment of the day came when Rishabh Pant walked out to bat with a broken foot. Despite his visible struggle to run between wickets, Pant displayed exceptional courage and skill. Pant's innings included a spectacular six off Archer's slower ball between mid-wicket and square leg. He followed this with a boundary through cover off Stokes to reach his fifty, earning a standing ovation from the crowd. Archer eventually ended Pant's brave innings by cleaning up his stumps with an excellent delivery. Joe Root's gesture of patting Pant on his way back reflected the opposition's appreciation for his valiant effort. 'It ain't like I'm a small guy' — Markieff Morris dares Nikola Jokic's MMA-trained brothers to box

(Image Source - Getty Images) In a lively episode of "The Big Podcast" hosted by NBA legend Shaquille O'Neal on July 24, 2025, Markieff and Marcus Morris, twin brothers and seasoned NBA players, threw down a bold challenge. They dared Nikola Jokic's brothers, Strahinja and Nemanja Jokic, to step into a boxing ring to settle an old score. The conversation, sparked by co-host Adam Lefkoe's comment about fearing Jokic's towering siblings, turned into a heated exchange about size, strength, and a potential fists-only showdown. Markieff Morris flexes his 6-10 frame on The Big Podcast The joking began when Adam Lefkoe remarked to the crew, "I'm super scared of Jokic's brother. That guy is massive. He's got a mohawk and everything." Markieff Morris was quick to respond — 'What does it mean? The bigger they are, the harder they fall. We big too. I'm 6-10, 270. It ain't like I'm a small guy. I'm bigger than them.' On "The Big Podcast," Markieff showed off his confidence in his 6-foot-10, 270-pound physique, shrugging off any thoughts that the Jokic brothers' size would intimidate him. Shaquille O'Neal, steering the conversation, asked, 'Oh because one of them is an MMA fighter?' to which Marcus replied, 'They'd be grabbing feet and all that. We can't do that. We can get it on straight.' This discussion, taken from "The Big Podcast," confirmed that Nemanja Jokic's MMA history was a major concern. Adam Lefkoe summed it up by saying, "So strictly boxing," and Marcus nodded in agreement, saying, "Only boxing," making the terms unmistakably clear. Markieff Morris recalls the 2021 incident with Nikola Jokic The dare from the Morris twins goes back to a heated moment in 2021, during an NBA matchup between the Denver Nuggets and the Miami Heat. Markieff Morris, who was playing for the Heat at the time, committed a hard foul on Nikola Jokic, elbowing him as Jokic was bringing the ball up the court in the fourth quarter. The Nuggets were already dominating the Heat, and Morris's foul seemed to ignite a response. Jokic retaliated by pushing Morris from behind, causing him to crash to the floor. Morris ended up with a neck injury that sidelined him for 58 games, while Jokic received a one-game suspension and Morris was fined $50,000. The fallout didn't stop there. Marcus Morris tweeted that night, 'Waited till bro turned his back smh. NOTED,' hinting at payback. Nikola's brothers, Strahinja and Nemanja, hit back by creating a Twitter account, @JokicBrothers, and posted: 'You should leave this the way it is instead of publicly threatening our brother! Your brother made a dirty play first. If you want to make a step further be sure we will be waiting for you !! Jokic Brothers. ' This online spat turned a one-off scuffle into a family feud. Fast forward to 2025, and the Morris twins are using Shaq's podcast to bring the rivalry back to life. In the episode, Markieff reflected on the 2021 incident and described Jokic's shove as a 'cheap shot,' saying, 'I did a basketball play... He hit me from behind... I'm not even in the mode of knowing you're about to hit me.' Making it happen would involve navigating contracts, safety protocols, and securing approvals from the NBA and other organizations, not to mention the injury risks for professional athletes. Yet, the banter on the podcast illustrates just how genuine the rivalry appears. Shaq, who dubbed Nikola his 'favorite big man' on the show, even sided with the Morris twins against the Jokic brothers' antics, adding fuel to the fire.
