The travellers who will soon be able to bypass standard airport customs

Independent3 days ago
A new pilot programme, One Stop Security (OSS), is launching this month to streamline airport customs for travellers on connecting flights from London to the US.
The scheme allows some American Airlines passengers flying from London Heathrow to Dallas Fort Worth International to clear US Customs at their arrival gate and have checked luggage automatically transferred.
This partnership between the TSA, US Customs and Border Protection, and the UK Department for Transport is expected to cut connection times by over half.
Delta passengers are also trialling OSS on routes from Heathrow to Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport, though bypassing TSA screening requires Global Entry or the Mobile Passport Control app.
The TSA indicates that the OSS programme, which follows a successful international pilot from Heathrow, could be expanded to other US airports soon.

Sheffield Wednesday players refuse to play friendly as wages are late again

Sheffield Wednesday 's players have refused to feature in a friendly this weekend after the club failed to pay their wages on time for the fourth time in five months. The Championship club were due to face Premier League side Burnley in a behind-closed-doors game but it is understood the Wednesday players are refusing to play. The Owls appointed Henrik Pedersen as their new head coach on Thursday following the departure of Danny Rohl and, just hours later, Saturday's friendly was cancelled as players and coaching staff decided to boycott the match after not receiving July's monthly salary on time. Rohl left Hillsborough on Tuesday during a chaotic summer which has seen Wednesday placed under a number of embargoes because of financial issues. Players were paid late in May and June, while this is the fourth time in the last five months that salaries have been delayed. The club are currently under an English Football League embargo for unpaid transfer fees and owner Dejphon Chansiri is trying to sell the cash-strapped Sky Bet Championship club. It is understood there is increasing concern within the EFL over the growing crisis at the club and that extends to whether Wednesday will be able to fulfil their opening Sky Bet Championship fixture at Leicester on August 10. Thai businessman Chansiri completed his takeover from previous owner Milan Mandaric January 2015 for a reported £30million and the club twice went close to promotion to the Premier League when losing out in the 2016 and 2017 play-offs. Since then Wednesday have lurched from one financial crisis to another. They were first placed under an EFL embargo in 2017 over profitability and sustainability rules and were docked 12 points – reduced to six on appeal – at the start of the 2020-21 season for further financial breaches. The Owls were placed under embargo for late salary payments to players and staff in 2024, while a player registration embargo is also in place for unpaid transfer fees. New boss Pedersen admitted the club were in 'rough waters' following his appointment, with registration restrictions and the departure of several key players leaving him with a threadbare squad. Djeidi Gassama and Anthony Musaba have been sold this summer to Rangers and Samsunspor respectively, while Josh Windass and Michael Smith had their contracts terminated by mutual consent to allow them to join Wrexham and Preston. The latest missed payments to players and staff heaps further pressure on Chansiri, who insists he is willing to sell the club for the right price. He recently revealed he had rejected one consortium's £40million bid, while talks with various other interested parties have stalled.

Intense rain and flash floods expected from New York City to Washington DC

Authorities are urging residents to prepare for severe weather as a powerful storm system that could cause intense flash floods moves through a swathe of the US east coast stretching from New York City to Washington DC. Forecasters are predicting intense rainfall, with rates possibly reaching up to 3 inches an hour. While most areas are expected to receive 1 to 3 inches of rain, certain isolated locations could see as much as 5 to 8 inches. In anticipation of the severe weather, the acting New Jersey governor, Tahesha Way, has declared a state of emergency for the state, effective at 2pm on Thursday. The declaration comes amid concerns over flooding, strong thunderstorms, heavy rainfall and gusty winds. 'Beginning this afternoon, we are expecting severe thunderstorms to bring heavy rainfall and damaging wind gusts with the potential for flash flooding across the state,' said Way. 'I urge all New Jerseyans to remain alert, follow all safety protocols, and monitor the proper channels for the duration of these storms. Residents should remain off the roads and indoors unless absolutely necessary.' The combination of saturated ground and intense downpours raises the risk of hazardous conditions such as flash floods, rock slides, and landslides. Officials warn that travel could become dangerous, especially during the evening commute, when the heaviest rain is expected. Storm activity could kick off as early as 1pm and continue well into the night. In addition to New Jersey's emergency declaration, New York City has issued a travel advisory for both Thursday and Friday. A flood watch will go into effect on Thursday afternoon. 'Be prepared for a serious storm,' the mayor, Eric Adams, said in a social media post. 'Avoid traveling if you can, and set up any flood prevention tools in advance,' he added. Zachary Iscol, commissioner of New York City Emergency Management (NYCEM), also warned those in the area that the storm system 'could bring intense rainfall rates and amounts in a very short period of time'. He added that the NYCEM has already activated the flash flood emergency plan. The warnings come just two weeks after intense rain storms hit parts of the northeastern US, flooding New York City subways and resulting in two deaths in New Jersey.
