How a couple survived a ‘defensive' grizzly bear attack

Independent5 days ago
A woman saved her husband from a grizzly bear attack on a Canadian trail by effectively using bear spray.
The incident took place on Saturday while the couple was e-biking along the Kootenay River in British Columbia.
The husband sustained significant injuries and was taken to the hospital for surgery following the encounter.
Officials determined the attack was 'defensive in nature', likely occurring because the couple startled two bears in thick brush.
Authorities decided not to capture or dispatch the bears, but advised others in bear country to carry and know how to use bear spray.

Husband's frantic search for British wife who vanished from sunbed as he slept: 'Stressed' spouse 'said his partner was "not very well" and had "disappeared before" as he asked for help finding her'

The husband of missing Brit Michele Bourda told shop owners his wife was 'not very well' and had 'disappeared before' as he asked for help finding her. The 59-year-old had been swimming at Ofrynio beach in the city of Kavala at around noon on Friday before disappearing. Her husband, who is Greek, had been sleeping and woke up to find that she had vanished from the beach. He reportedly asked the owners in a nearby shop if they had seen his wife, and revealed that Mrs Bourda 'was not very well'. Speaking to Greek outlet Protothema, one of the shop owners said: 'The couple were together and at some point the husband fell asleep and it seems that the wife went in to swim. 'When the husband woke up and didn't see her next to him, he came to the store and asked us if we had seen his wife, who had disappeared. 'He also told us that his wife was not very well, and that she had problems.' The shop keeper went on to say that Mrs Bourda's husband 'was a bit stressed' and told them that 'his wife had done this before, that is, she had disappeared.' She disappeared from Ofrynio beach in the city of Kavala in Greece (file picture) 'This is what he told us, that she had gotten lost again and that she wasn't very well, the woman had problems'. Police have been searching on land for the tourist, while Greece 's Hellenic Coast Guard have been scouring the sea, but the central port authority in Kavala last night said it had paused its targeted search and rescue efforts. A Silver Alert was issued after the police failed to immediately locate the tourist and authorities have warned that she may be in danger. Silver Alerts are usually used to notify citizens about the disappearance of elderly people, especially those with dementia or Alzheimer's. A fitness instructor said that he saw a woman that resembled Mrs Bourda swimming in deep waters and said that he urged her to not go any further, LBC reports. Sources have also claimed that her belongings were left behind next to her sun-lounger after she vanished. A coast guard official told The Sun that the Brit had been 'residing temporarily' in Serres, northern Greece. 'Michele is a British citizen who likely also had a home in the UK'. A map shows how the 10.5-mile-long Greek beach where Mrs Bourda vanished after lounging on a sunbed is surrounded by expansive fields, residential houses and a huge fishing pond. Mrs Bourda was last seen wearing a rhinestone-embellished two-piece beaded swimsuit, yellow beach shoes and a pair of red horn-rimmed sunglasses. It is understood she went to the beach in northern Greece with her Greek husband, who was asleep when she vanished. When he woke up, his wife was nowhere to be found, according to local media. She is described as being 5ft 6in, of a slim build with blue eyes and shoulder-length hair. The Greek missing persons charity, Lifeline Hellas, issued a Silver Alert on Saturday after the police were unable to locate her. 'Her life is in danger. If you know anything, contact the Silver Alert service, 24 hours a day, at the National SOS Line 1065,' the alert said. The Daily Mail contacted the FCDO for comment on whether the UK Government was assisting in the search for Ms Bourda. It comes after a 60-year-old British tourist went missing in June while on holiday in Greece. His hired car was found abandoned on the island of Karpathos in 38C heat and he was last seen by the owner of his rented accommodation on June 27. Meanwhile, fears are growing for a British woman who disappeared from a Spanish tourist hotspot last week. Jennifer Frances Lacey, 41, vanished from the municipality of Vera on Monday, July 28. Her disappearance was reported by the SOS Missing Persons Association on Thursday and she is described as measuring 5ft 2in, having curly brown hair, blue eyes and wearing prescription glasses. A Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office spokesman told the Daily Mail: 'We are supporting the family of a British woman who was reported missing in Spain.' At least ten foreign tourists were found dead or disappeared last year in Greece while going for a hike, often in high temperatures, the New York Times reported. It also comes days after the search for an elderly British man who went missing on a trip to ancient Turkish tombs ended in tragedy. Following a three-day search in and around the ancient tombs of Kaunos in Turkey for the 79-year-old, investigators found a body. The man was reported missing by his daughter, who he travelled with to Çandır, a village in Muğla's Köyceğiz district in southwestern Turkey, for a holiday together on July 26. At 10.30am that day, her father began a trip by rowboat to the nearby rock-cut temple tombs of Kaunos, also known as the Lycian rock tombs, but she lost contact with him and has not heard from his since. Following his daughter's report, Turkish authorities launched a search for the man with a 19-person team, consisting of the Köyceğiz Gendarmerie District Command, Muğla AFAD and an NGO.

A bird dropped a fish on power lines and sparked a brush fire in Canada, firefighters say

An osprey caught a fish but got tired in the heat and dropped it onto power lines, sparking a brush fire in western Canada — at least that's what firefighters believe. Or maybe the bird is an aspiring chef. 'Another suspicion could be that it's tired of raw fish and wanted to give cooked a try,' the Ashcroft Fire Rescue service said in a tongue-in-cheek social media post about the incident. The firefighters shared photos of the charred fish on the blackened ground and said the fire took place July 30 about 6 kilometers (4 miles) south of the British Columbia town of Ashcroft. They said investigators found that the fish 'had been dropped by a local osprey onto hydro lines,' with the resulting embers starting the fire on dry grass below. The fire occurred about 3 kilometers (2 miles) west of the closest river, and investigators said they suspect the bird took flight after catching the fish but got tired and dropped the fish because it was large and because the temperatures were high at the time. The post says firefighters have verified that the 'prime suspect sustained no injuries in the incident.' The incident briefly knocked out the power for Ashcroft, and firefighters and ranchers used about 4,800 gallons of water to put out the blaze.

Failed UK asylum seeker died trying to board ship heading to Canada

A failed asylum seeker from Egypt drowned after he tried to jump onto a ship at Southampton docks, an inquest has heard. Walid Gomaa, 36, who was denied asylum when he arrived in the UK in 2021, tried to board the vehicle-transporter ship bound for Canada on April 28 this year. Mr Gomaa, who had lived in the UK illegally for four years, drowned during the attempt. A post-mortem found evidence that he had been using cannabis and cocaine recreationally at the time of his death. The Egyptian was spotted by crew members of the 200-metre MV Tannhauser attempting to reach the ramp's finger-flaps –articulated extensions at the end of the vessel– as it was being raised ahead of sailing, the Winchester inquest was told. The operator paused the raising and saw Mr Gomaa walk away but as they started lifting up the ramp again, Mr Gomaa ran and jumped towards the ramp, despite a crew member shouting at him to stop. The inquest heard that Mr Gomaa hit his head and fell into the sea at Empress Dock at the Queen Elizabeth II Terminal, where he drowned before a rescue boat could reach him. Coroner Jason Pegg said: 'Mr Gomaa attempted a second time, warnings were shouted to Mr Gomaa but he continued despite the warnings. 'Mr Gomaa jumped off the jetty towards the vessel. On this occasion Mr Gomaa was not able to grab hold of anything and fell towards the water between the jetty and the vessel itself.' Mr Pegg said a post-mortem examination found the cause of death was drowning which resulted from a head injury and a fall into the water. They also found that cocaine and cannabis were in his system. The coroner said a friend had contacted police after Mr Gomaa had not been in touch and said Mr Gomaa had told him that he planned to travel to Canada. Mr Pegg said that when the friend asked how he was going to get there, Mr Gomaa replied: 'Do not worry about it.' The coroner added: 'Mr Gomaa came to the UK in 2021 and was not given status in this country and disappeared for a period of time. 'He initially claimed asylum but that was denied in 2021 and it was not until April 2025 that Mr Gomaa raised his head again.' In a message to Mr Gomaa's family in Egypt, who did not attend the hearing, Mr Pegg said: 'I do give my condolences to Walid Gomaa's family and friends and they have my best wishes.'
