Graham Thorpe to be honoured during fifth Test with ‘Day for Thorpey'

Glasgow Times2 days ago
Thorpe took his own life on August 4 last year – three days after his 55th birthday – following a prolonged struggle with depression and anxiety.
The stylish left-handed batter – who scored 6,744 Test runs at an average of 44.66 and became one of only 17 men to reach 100 Test caps for England – was survived by wife Amanda and daughters Kitty and Emma, who are now raising money for mental health charity Mind.

The family also wish to 'celebrate his memory' on 'A Day for Thorpey' on the second day of the England-India Test at The Kia Oval, home of Thorpe's former county Surrey where he played for 17 years between 1988 and 2005.
Speaking to BBC Breakfast, Amanda said: 'That day will be very powerful. We want to celebrate him and his memory. His light was so bright.
'We're heartbroken. People would say 'don't feel guilty, you did everything you could' and, of course, we did. But I do feel guilty.
'We looked at some videos of Graham happy on holiday, for the first time the other day I couldn't do it. But then I don't want to remember all his suffering and how he was.

'I want to remember and celebrate Graham, so grateful to have had 20-plus odd years with him. We just move forward, but I definitely want to help.
'I still don't really understand it. How did it happen to Graham? But it can happen to anyone.'
Thorpe held coaching roles with Surrey and England after his playing career.
He was part of the England staff during the taxing 2021-22 Ashes in Australia, played under Covid restrictions – which Amanda said he found 'tough' – and was let go after the tourists lost the series 4-0.
Thorpe was named head coach of Afghanistan in March 2022, then made a first attempt on his life in May of the same year and subsequently spent a prolonged period in intensive care.
'Over the years it worsened, until he couldn't get out of bed,' Kitty said.
'It was impossible not to notice his spark and whole personality changed over time to almost unrecognisable. It was awful to see. What started as a mental illness turned into a physical illness.
'Over two years he aged about 15 years. He looked really weak. He found the most easy, menial tasks so challenging, like making a meal or walking the dog. He started struggling to even do that. He lost his strength.

'We tried many different treatments, but nothing worked for him.
Thorpe wore a trademark headband while batting, and headbands designed by the family and costing £5 will be sold to raise money for Mind.
Amanda visited a 'Bat and Chat' session in Burton-upon-Trent, an initiative from Mind designed to support mental health through cricket.
The sessions are to be renamed 'Thorpey's Bat and Chat' and funds raised from the day at The Oval will be used to roll them out across the country.
Surrey chair Oli Slipper said: 'Amanda and the family have spoken very bravely about the difficult times that Graham experienced with his mental health and we hope that the Day for Thorpey will raise awareness and funds to help people who are struggling with their mental wellbeing.'

Cricketer Graham Thorpe ‘spiralled into depression' after job loss, inquest told

The 55-year-old died on the morning of August 4 2024 after being struck by a train at a railway station in Surrey and his widow Amanda Thorpe later said he had taken his own life. An inquest at Surrey Coroner's Court in Woking on Wednesday heard that Mr Thorpe was diagnosed with anxiety and depression in 2018 and previously tried to take his own life in 2022. An incident involving a leaked video in Australia that year had left him 'distraught', the court was told. Mrs Thorpe said that up until 2020 there were no psychological issues in particular, apart from 'a bout of depression' in 2018 which did not affect his job. In a statement to the court, she said her husband 'found lockdown and Covid very difficult, very stressful'. While on tour in Australia, there was an 'incident involving a video that was taken that had adverse publicity'. Mr Thorpe shared a video with some friends which was leaked, and the incident was 'blown out of all proportion', leaving Mr Thorpe 'distraught', Mrs Thorpe's statement added. According to reports at the time, the video, filmed after a dismal Ashes series which England lost 4-0, showed Tasmanian police breaking up a drinking session involving both England and Australia players. Mrs Thorpe described it as a 'horrible' time, and said the later termination of his employment with the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) was a 'real shock to Graham', which was the 'start of the decline of his mental health'. Coroner Jonathan Stevens read a statement from Mr Thorpe's GP, Dr Joan Munnelly, who said the cricketer was diagnosed with anxiety and depression in 2018. Dr Munnelly said an attempt to take his own life in 2022 resulted in a brain injury and he was in intensive care. Mr Thorpe spent time in a private hospital after he was discharged. By 2023, Mr Thorpe had suicidal thoughts, Mrs Thorpe said, and after Christmas he was 'in a terrible way'. The last contact between Mr Thorpe and those responsible for his psychiatric care was in June last year, and Mrs Thorpe felt that he should have been 'assessed properly', the court heard. In a statement, Mr Thorpe's father, Geoff Thorpe, said the video incident had 'caused catastrophic damage to him' and 'ultimately he lost his job', then quickly 'spiralled into depression'. Mr Thorpe became 'more and more desperate and helpless in the last year of his life', he added. Reading Geoff Thorpe's statement, the coroner said: 'You felt those who were responsible for Graham's safety and care could've done more to intervene.' Professor Nick Pierce, the ECB's chief medical officer, said in a statement that after Mr Thorpe's employment ended in February 2022 his private health insurance cover was extended until the May. In May the ECB was advised that Mr Thorpe had attempted to take his own life, and he explained that 'at no point during Graham's time at ECB had there been any concern regarding a risk of self harm or intent to end life'. He added that the ECB healthcare trust was approached about helping to cover the costs of treatment for Mr Thorpe at a hospital and the trustees agreed. Mr Thorpe was a mainstay in the England set-up for many years, first as a batter between 1993 and 2005 before spending 12 years in coaching roles. During a distinguished international career, he struck 16 Test hundreds for England, including a debut century against Australia at Trent Bridge in 1993, and represented his country 182 times in all formats. The inquest continues.

Prince William to attend England Women's Euro 2025 final

The Prince of Wales is set to attend England Women's Euro 2025 final in Switzerland on Sunday. Kensington Palace has confirmed that William is to attend Sunday's final in Basel in his role as patron of the Football Association. It comes after football fan William congratulated the reigning champions on their thrilling comeback to reach the final in a last-gasp victory over Italy in extra time in Switzerland on Tuesday. In a message on X, football fan William wrote: 'Brilliant performance @ Lionesses! One game from glory! #WEURO2025.' They will play the winners of the semi-final between Germany and Spain, which takes place later on Wednesday. Chloe Kelly had 'no doubt in her mind' about taking the pressure-cooker extra-time penalty that sent England into the final, according to defender Alex Greenwood. The Lionesses were on the brink of elimination by Italy when 19-year-old substitute Michelle Agyemang forced extra time, drawing the sides level with an equaliser in the sixth minute of stoppage time to cancel out Barbara Bonansea's 33rd-minute opener. Then, with another shootout minutes away, Beth Mead was brought down and Kelly stepped up to the spot, where she was initially denied by Laura Giuliani, but buried the rebound to complete England's second successive stunning comeback. 'That takes a lot of courage to step up to take that,' Greenwood said. 'I asked her, she had no doubt in her mind, she was confident enough to take it. Support has been flooding in from some of England's top sport stars. Former England skipper Sir David Beckham and seven-time Formula 1 World Champion Sir Lewis Hamilton both posted an image on Instagram stories with the full-time 2-1 scoreline and the jubilant team in celebration after the nailbiting finish. The messages read 'Well done @lionesses, never a doubt'. Sir Lewis added three handclapping emoji's to a shot he posted of Agyemang sprinting in delight after her vital goal. England's men's captain Harry Kane also said 'Congratulations @lionesses!! One to go!' Instagram stories post set against a photograph of the players. There was also support from two key Lionesses from the Euro 2022-winning squad who pulled out ahead of this year's tournament. In posts on their Instagram stories, England defender Millie Bright described reaching that final as 'sensational' while former goalkeeper Mary Earps showed a clip of the frenzied reaction of England's Red Roses rugby squad as Agyemang levelled up the scoreline. Earps added a note saying 'women supporting women'. Bright made herself unavailable for selection for the Euros, saying she was unable to 'give 100% mentally or physically' while Earps retired from international football five weeks before the Euro defence campaign in Switzerland. On Wednesday, defender Lucy Bronze said: 'I think the fight, the talent, the hard work we have in this England team is unbelievable and to get back-to-back European finals is not an easy feat. 'Not many teams have done that.' The Lionesses have now reached three top flight finals in a row, including a loss at the World Cup. Kelly described it as an 'unbelievable feeling'. She said: 'It's unbelievable. Such a great feeling. This team deserve nothing but that. 'Three finals on the bounce and we want more. 'This is an unbelievable feeling.' Former Lioness Lianne Sanderson gave high praise to Agyemang, posting on X: 'It's what she does. 3 goals in 4 caps for her country and was on the pitch for 5 mins. Take a bow Michelle Agyemang 19 years old. Wow. 'I can't breathe I just went absolutely mental . #Euro2025 #Lionesses #England.' She added: 'Roll on Sunday wow this team. I honestly don't know how they do it but they find a way. I've got a headache, I'm losing my voice but again on we go. Well done team . 'Commiserations for they were brilliant, football can be so cruel sometimes but that's the nature of the beast. Get in!!! #England #Italy #Lionessess #Euro2025.'
