For the Gen Z population, the youngest group in our workforce, a simple smiley face or a thumbs up can feel anything but simply what they intend to mean. Surabhi Pandey, Counseling Psychologist, Lissun shares insight on how these emojis are impacting Gen Z's mental health at work.
The older colleagues might put thumbs up as a symbol of acknowledgement but for Gen Z, it might carry a tone of passive aggressiveness or no appreciation. Using emoji often gives a lot of space for subjective interpretation. The minor difference of how an emoji is used and how one might interpret could eventually become a source of tension, leading to anxiety in modern office culture.
Unlike previous generations, Gen Z has grown up with digital communication as their native mode of communication. Emoji are no longer just an add-on for them, they are a very inherent part of their sentences- a very significant indicator of emotions, tone markers and mood setters. A simple message without any added emoji might feel a cold, dismissive or emotionally distant message.
According to Telus International(2023), 74% of the Gen Z population of employees feel anxious about how they are being perceived in the workplace and over 60% of the Gen Z population of workers reported that they felt uncomfortable asking for clarification in digital interaction. According to Deloitte's 2024 Gen Z Report, 46% of employees in the Gen Z population say mental health challenges impact their ability to work effectively, in which toxic or unclear communication plays a major contributing factor.
When the tone and intent of the message is misread it leads to second guessing, overthinking,feeling of imposter syndrome and even avoidance-especially among the people who experience anxiety or get overwhelmed easily.
But it is not just the emojis but also the broader cultural gap. Gen Z has grown up prioritizing authenticity, open communication and emotional intelligence, and expects the same from workplace communication. When messages feel ambiguous it can impact their motivation, productivity and mental well being.
So, now what can be done about it?
It starts with awareness. The cross generational style of communication differs and being mindful of how small symbols and emojis are interpreted can create a long space between the speaker and listener.The intergenerational conversations should be encouraged around digital etiquette and tone Managers and Team members can benefit from open conversation about communication preference. The team can consider creating norms around workplace communication. It may assist in balancing emojis with clear language to reduce space for misinterpretation.
In the end it is never really about the thumbs up or a simple smiley face- it is rather about feeling seen, acknowledged, understood and respected in the workplace. Because in a world where work happens through screens, even the simplest of symbols have the power to speak volumes.

From loudly slamming doors to frustrated yelling of 'Why don't you get me?', the gap between generations can sometimes feel too wide to bridge. While both children and parents navigate their own problems in life, they often turn a blind eye to each other's struggles, unintentionally widening the emotional distance. This is why a powerful way to make a supportive environment at home is to understand each other's perspectives. HT Lifestyle reached out to a psychiatrist to explore how parents and children can understand each other. Understanding each other's perspectives Understanding each other creates a cooperative environment at home.(Shutterstock) Dr Ajit Dandekar, head of mental health (psychiatry and psychology) at Nanavati Max Super Speciality Hospital in Mumbai, shared three behavioural approaches for parents. He said, 'Keep it simple, start with respect, aim for understanding before instructions, and focus on effort rather than criticism. Those three shifts alone can transform everyday conversations at home.' What can parents do to understand their children better? Further, Dr Dandekar listed six things parents can do to understand their children better, covering all the essentials, from conversation hacks to emotional regulation: Listen to decode, not to dismiss: Children rarely say things 'straight,' their feelings are often wrapped in stories or behaviour. Reflect back what you hear ('It sounds like you're really frustrated about…') so they feel seen, not judged. Validate feelings before giving advice: Start with, 'I get why that hurt/was scary' before you instruct or correct. Validation lowers emotional intensity and opens the door to problem-solving. Use an 'emotional mirror': Name the emotion you observe—'You seem angry and let down'—without lecturing. Accurate reflection helps children identify, regulate, and eventually change their own responses. Avoid comparisons, blaming and labels: Comparing siblings, calling a child 'lazy', or stonewalling shuts communication down. Praise effort, strategies and progress, not personality traits—this builds resilience and a growth mindset. Co-create boundaries and routines: Invite children to help set a few clear rules and predictable routines. Shared ownership increases cooperation and reduces daily power struggles. Repair quickly after ruptures: If you've overreacted, apologise and restate the goal calmly. Modelling accountability teaches children how to repair relationships, too. Be curious, not controlling: Ask open questions ('What made today tough?') instead of rapid-fire instructions. Curiosity communicates respect and keeps the conversation two-way, not two parallel monologues. What can children do to understand their parents better? It's easy to blame parents and say 'they just don't get it', but they are human too. Commonly, children see them only through the lens of their role as 'parents,' forgetting they, too, have their own pressures and emotions. Understanding goes both ways. Dr Dandekar listed out three things for children to understand their parents' pov: Acknowledge effort and limits: Parents juggle finances, work, and care. Noticing their effort ('Thanks for trying to make time today') softens conflict and builds mutual empathy. Say what you feel and what you need: Use clear 'I' statements—'I felt ignored when…' and 'I need 10 minutes to explain…'—instead of withdrawing or shouting. Join the solution: Offer ideas, accept reasonable boundaries and follow agreed-upon routines. Collaboration shows maturity and earns trust. Keeping indoors clean and safe An unwashed pillowcase carries a lot of germs and bacteria.(Shutterstock) The physical environment also shapes mood in more ways than one. So while emotional connection is the foundation of a healthy parent-child relationship, it's equally important for parents to ensure that children are comfortable and in a safe, clean space. Weighing in on this, Nathan Lawson McLean, Design Engineer at Dyson, shared the importance of a cleaning routine and maintaining a safe indoor air quality. 'Many parents assume that staying indoors protects their families from pollution, but indoor air can often be more polluted than outdoor air due to sources like cooking, cleaning agents, furniture, and even dust mites,' Nathan explained. 'Areas such as mattresses, pillows, curtains, fabric covers, and soft toys are frequently overlooked during cleaning, yet they can harbour dust, allergens, bacteria, and even microscopic particles that linger for months." Nathan further quoted a recent study, which revealed that an unwashed pillowcase, when left unwashed for even just a week, can collect millions of bacteria, becoming a significant risk to children's health and overall well-being. To prevent the risk of falling sick, Nathan suggested, 'Regular vacuuming of these surfaces, especially mattresses and other high-contact areas, is essential to minimise exposure to harmful particles. Pairing this with proper ventilation helps reduce the buildup of pollutants and ensures fresher, cleaner air for your little ones. Babies spend so much of their time sleeping, and creating a serene, clean sleep environment not only supports their growth and development but also provides peace of mind for parents." Why do women reject men so brutally? It's kinder than breadcrumbing
Nobody approaches anyone at clubs or parties. Gen Z prefers being ghosted on dating apps to the sting of a real-life 'no'. Some of us share the crests and troughs of our lives with strangers on not less than two to three apps, only to be unmatched mid-trauma dump—because they found someone hotter in the queue. Then there are the masochists who get into situationships. They get rejected by the same person every day. Now, that is commitment. Just ask anyone who's hit their daily 'like' limit on Hinge, only to be met with silence—five swipes, zero matches, and a bruised ego. For instant healing, you aggressively swipe left on everyone who liked you. But don't quote me on that, I will deny everything. Romantic rejection is a rite of passage, and everyone's either a victim or a villain. Online dating was designed to dodge it at all costs. But—surprise, surprise—it only gave rejection a software update. The new-age dating scene thrives on polite confusion. The painful clarity of 'I don't like you' is replaced with the more gutting 'I don't like you… enough'. There's always one person in a casual relationship burning the midnight oil for a boyfriend or girlfriend title, only to be slapped with a friend-with-benefits role, or a weekend hookup appointment. It's rejection in layers, or you can call it death by a thousand paper cuts. Grieving online Cultural critics blame the dating apps for the growing fear of rejection among Gen Z and for relationships that feel like an elaborate humiliation ritual. Content creators and dating experts on Instagram post carousels on how to rise above rejection. It's not you, it's them—that's the basic TED talk. Daters are advised to take it as a blessing, a redirection to better things. Because there are now a million ways someone can reject you, the online good Samaritans are also helping people read hidden signs in vague text messages and silent body language. Psychologists, on the other hand, are diagnosing people with rejection sensitivity dysphoria—a condition where rejections feel catastrophic. In simple therapy speak, the only treatment is 'healing your inner child'. The Jesus fanbase is spreading its own propaganda: 'So what he doesn't want you? God loves you.' To fact-check this claim, you must reach out to the press office in heaven. On the unhinged side—aka the interesting one—the discourse takes a juicier turn. The advice you get there sounds petty, but it works like a charm. Reject them before they reject you. Switch off the blue tick on WhatsApp, so you never know at what point you were ghosted. Always go for people uglier than you, so there's less risk of disappointment. 'People who are both job hunting and swiping on dating apps are burning the stick of dynamite at both ends,' read one tweet. Someone replied: 'I've been thinking about and then deciding not to even try to redownload a dating app every few days while I've been job hunting because I can only handle so much rejection at once.' Trust us to not suffer quietly through the pangs of unrequited love. We grieve online—via cryptic captions, sad girl playlists, and 20-minute voicenotes to our besties. Some of us even descend into the digital underworld of subtweets and AITA threads to roast our former flings. 'I gave the ugly guy a chance and he had the gall to block me,' one post read. Dating apps are editorial fodder Danger: Rejections ahead While nobody takes rejection well, newspaper headlines reveal that it turns men into murderers, stalkers, and rapists. A 27-year-old chartered accountant said she blames her 'strict landlord' every time she wants to tell a man she can't bring him home after a lousy first date. This is not to rob women of their own predatory, pushy streak. Convinced of their fairy-like qualities, some of them can't digest that a man can reject them. Raanjhanaa's Kundan looks like a noob chaser compared to them. A Delhi-based man snubbed his one-night stand at least 20 times, and yet she wouldn't give up hounding him online and offline. She'd crash every party thrown by their mutual friends, just to grill him about why he won't return her calls. Worried about being bad-mouthed, the man caved and went on one more date with her. She didn't have fun that day, so she told him to never text her again. Love may be dead, but audacity lives on. Men also frequently call out women for being brutal in the way they reject them. The memes start with 'Worst she can say is no' and end with a punchline that would scar a person for life. In a viral text exchange doing rounds on social media, a guy asks a girl to clarify if he's her lover, sidepiece, friend, etc. She replies, 'Etc.' Who would survive this? In our defence, women say it's better to destroy someone in one blow than keep them hanging for months. 'I refuse to act like men who give breadcrumbs of affection for months till the other person takes the hint,' said a serial rejecter working in finance. The delivery is savage, but the intention is often mercy. Rejection has wrecked some people to the point that they've taken the involuntary celibacy route. Thanks to desi matrimony, not everyone will die single. Our parents are more than happy to take over the burden—and get rejected on our behalf. You can't pay me enough to take that route. Two Different Worlds, Two Different Mindsets Well it's just about different mindsets; it's also about circumstances both generations grew up in. Millennials grew up in a climate of scarcity: fewer jobs, rising costs, and a digital world that was just beginning to explode. For them, hard work was survival. Hustle culture was the ladder up. Gen Z, on the other hand, has grown up in a constant state of saturation, information, technology, advice, and pressure coming at them from all directions. 'So while millennials sought work to prove their worth, Gen Z questions whether the work is even worth it. It's not an entitlement. It's context', says Dr. Sehgal. Boundaries Are Not Laziness The biggest criticism Gen Z faces is that they 'don't want to work hard.' But as Dr. Sehgal points out, 'It's a sign of neurological maturity. Chronic stress impairs cognitive flexibility and emotional regulation. Setting boundaries isn't about avoiding stress, it's about managing it before it leads to long-term psychological wear and tear. Gen Z isn't rejecting effort; they're rejecting the glorification of burnout. That's not immaturity, that's wisdom, backed by neuroscience'. Hence, boundaries, in this context, aren't a way out. They're a way through. This also means success has been redefined. It is no longer about endlessly working without rest. 'Redefining success and resisting overwork are not laziness. In fact, Gen Z is highly entrepreneurial, they just don't want their entire identity tethered to output. Clinically, we know sustained productivity is impossible without recovery. So if Gen Z wants meaning, impact, and rest, that's not rebellion, that's resilience. It's time to stop diagnosing generational shifts as moral failures.' In this new definition, balance is not the enemy of ambition, it is what makes ambition sustainable. Can Millennials and Gen Z Learn From Each Other? The future lies in the balance, both the generations must learn from each other. Dr. Sehgal says, 'Millennials need to unlearn guilt around rest; Gen Z needs to build tolerance for discomfort', The future of work may belong to those who can carry both of these lessons at once: the drive of the millennials and the emotional awareness of Gen Z. Hence, work life balance today is not an option, it's a strategy. Millennials teaches us to work with everything and without any limits, while Gen Z teaches us to protect those limits because you don't have to over work, over pain, or exhaust yourself to prove yourself, and to prove that you deserve happiness, you deserve it everyday, all the time, even when you are not working. Somewhere between these two, lies a future where ambition and wellbeing can coexist. It is a future where success is not measured only by titles or hours spent at work, but by the quality of life you build, the relationships you nurture, and the purpose you find in your work.
