Cops bust three criminal gangs in Sungai Petani
Kuala Muda district police chief ACP Hanyan Ramlan said in Op Lusuh, three men aged between 30 and 34 years old, were arrested on May 12 after they were believed to have been involved in 45 cases of water meter thefts.
'A total of 45 units of copper water meter casings belonging to Syarikat Air Darul Aman (SADA), a plastic bag containing 11.05 kilogrammes of burnt copper wires as well as a suspect's motorcycle were seized.
'Background checks found that all the suspects have prior criminal records and two suspects tested positive for methamphetamine,' he said at a press conference at the Kuala Muda district police headquarters (IPD) here today.
It is said that water meters, costing RM120 per piece, are sold to scrap metal dealers for RM15 each, and this gang is believed to have been active for the past six months.
'The case is being investigated under Section 379 of the Penal Code for theft, and further investigations are still ongoing. Police warn that legal action will be taken against secondhand goods premises that trade in stolen items,' he said.
Meanwhile, Hanyan said in Op Pintu, also on May 12, police arrested two men aged 30 and 36 years believed to be members of Geng Raji who were active in housebreaking and stealing gas cylinders in residential areas around this district.
Police seized burglary tools, a security guard's vest, grinder, water jet, soap barrel, car, and a plastic package containing suspected methamphetamine weighing 0.41 grammes.
'Both suspects tested positive for methamphetamine and they also have criminal records related to drugs and crime,' he said.
In the meantime, through Op Sentap on May 20, two men aged 28 and 29, believed to be active in robbery and snatch theft activities, were also arrested.
The arrest of these two members of Geng Emy helped the police solve four snatch theft cases. Their modus operandi was to snatch women's handbags placed in motorcycle baskets.
'Checks of past criminal records found that both suspects had records, and both tested positive for methamphetamine. The case is being investigated under Section 394 of the Penal Code for the offence of causing hurt in committing robbery,' he added.

Mentally ill woman remanded for assaulting child at grocery store
NILAI: A woman who holds a Persons with Disabilities (PwD) card was arrested last night for allegedly assaulting an 11-year-old boy at a grocery shop in the Sri Palma Villa housing area in Mantin. The incident occurred at around 12.30pm yesterday, when the woman is believed to have suspected the boy of stealing items from the store. Nilai district police chief Superintendent Abdul Malik Hasim said police received a report at 3.30pm from a local woman who claimed that her son had been attacked and threatened by a woman known to her. "A team from the Nilai district police headquarters arrested a woman in her 30s at around 11pm for allegedly injuring the boy," he said in a statement today. Police also seized a grey hooded sweatshirt and a toy weapon as evidence. Abdul Malik said initial investigations showed the victim had been buying a drink when the suspect suddenly kicked and stomped on his face and legs. "She is also accused of threatening to kill the boy. The incident was captured on closed-circuit television (CCTV) and witnessed by another customer," he said. He added that the suspect holds a PwD card and is believed to suffer from mental health issues. "She was reportedly hallucinating at the time and accused the victim of stealing, although there is no evidence to support the claim," he said. The victim was treated at Tuanku Ja'afar Hospital (HTJ) in Seremban for swelling to the nose and bruising on parts of his legs. The case is being investigated under Sections 323 and 506 of the Penal Code for causing hurt and criminal intimidation. The suspect was brought before the Seremban Magistrate's Court this morning, where a four-day remand was granted until July 19 to facilitate investigations.

Senior Perak cop's teen murder trial: Defence to revise court submission after prosecution shifts stance
IPOH, July 16 — The defence in the trial of DSP Mohd Nazri Abdul Razak, who is accused of killing 17-year-old Muhammad Zaharif Affendi Muhd Zamrie two years ago, will be filing a new written submission related to Section 300(d) of the Penal Code. Defence counsel M. Athimulan told the High Court here today that they needed to review their previous submissions. 'Our submissions comprised both Section 300(c) and (d) of the Penal Code, but were more concentrated on Section 300(c). However, the prosecution's stand now is that they are relying on Section 300(d). 'This creates a need to revise our entire submissions. In view of that, we are seeking an adjournment to file this new submission, with the court's indulgence, in about six weeks,' he said. The court allowed the adjournment, giving the defence six weeks to file the new written submission, while the prosecution was given four weeks thereafter to respond. Judge Datuk Bhupindar Singh Gucharan Singh Preet fixed October 1 and 2 for the full hearing of submissions from both parties. Deputy Public Prosecutor Afzainizam Abdul Aziz said Section 300(d) was mentioned during the prosecution's opening statement on Nov 5 last year, but the defence's submissions had not focused on that section.
