Joe Root continued his prolific run-scoring dominance against India as he secured his 37th Test hundred with his first runs of Day 2's play in the Lord's Test of the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy on Friday.
Steering Jasprit Bumrah for a streaky four through gully off the first ball after resuming play on 99 not out, the 34-year-old Root reached his 11th century against India and a record eighth Test ton at the hallowed home of cricket. The former England captain, who is inching closer to Sachin Tendulkar's summit of 15,921 runs, became only the fifth batter after the India batting legend, Ponting, Kallis and Kumar Sangakkara to record 37 hundreds in the format. Root also shattered several significant records as he made his first century of the ongoing five-match series.

ENG-W vs IND-W: Jones, Ecclestone help England draw level series in rain-affected game

Amy Jones and Sophie Ecclestone were the stars of the show as England defeated India by x wickets to level the series 1-1. Ecclestone picked up three wickets for 27 in her six-over spell to restrict India to 143/8 in 29 overs as the match was affected by rain at the very beginning. Needing 144 runs to win, Jones and Tammy Beaumont set up the chase with their first wicket stand before rain came to play spoilsport once again. advertisementIn the end, the target was revised to 115 from 24 overs, and Sophia Dunkley and Jones ensured that the win was sealed with the former hitting a boundary. India had come into the contest on the back of a sensational win over the hosts in the first ODI where Deepti Sharma starred for them. But both teams were forced to wait indoors as there was heavy rain around the stadium and the covers were firmly on. The fans turned up in good numbers, but everyone had to wait for four hours before the game got underway. ENG-W VS IND-W 2ND ODI HIGHLIGHTS England won the toss and put India into bat and the decision proved to be a masterstroke. Pratika Rawal, who did face some disciplinary action after her run-ins with English players in the first match, didn't stay for too long and was cleaned up by Em Arlott. Smriti Mandhana, who was India's best batter on the day, looked solid during her knock of 42 off 51 balls but failed to get support from the other end. India batters looked to be in a hurryOnce Harleen Deol came on, she and Mandhana slowly steadied things with a 40-run stand before Ecclestone came to the fore. The left-arm spinner dismissed Harleen and that sort of opened the floodgates for England. Captain Harmanpreet Kaur (7), Jemimah Rodrigues (3) and Richa Ghosh (2), all looked to be in a hurry to up the ante and failed miserably as India got reduced to 72 for five. Mandhana looked to be waging a lone battle and finally got some assistance from Deepti, and the duo added 26 runs. But the wicket of Mandhana pegged back India once again as the onus was on Deepti to perform a rescue act. She got support from Arundhati Reddy and the duo ensured India was setup for a good finish in the end. Deepti's cameo of 30 ensured they got to 143 runs in 29 overs. India's bowling lacks biteThe Indian bowlers and fielding seemed to be lacking some bite on Saturday as they failed to stop the run flow. While the pitch was offering some grip and turn, the Indian spinners were unable to have the same effect as their English counterparts. advertisementThis allowed Beaumont and Jones to get off to a flier in chasing the target down. Beaumont, especially, looked to be in fine touch as she played her shots to counter the Indian attack. The duo added 54 in 62 balls before Sneh Rana brought India back into the contest. However, this momentum was quickly ended by Jones, who scored 46 off 57 balls and got a couple of boundaries in before rain came to have England sweating with 18.2 overs bowled. Time was not the friend of the hosts as rain came pelting down and eight balls needed to be delivered before the game could be considered as complete. Thankfully, for England, the rain relented and they were able to get the job done despite losing captain Nat Sciver-Brunt right after the game restarted. The decided will now be played on Tuesday, July 22 in Durham. - EndsTune InMust Watch

Harbhajan Makes Bold Call For 4th Test: 'Drop Nitish And Bring Kuldeep Directly'

Last Updated: Harbhajan Singh backs Kuldeep Yadav for India's XI in the fourth Test of the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy 2025 at Old Trafford, suggesting Nitish Kumar Reddy be dropped for Kuldeep. India's legendary off-spinner Harbhajan Singh has supported the inclusion of left-arm wrist spinner Kuldeep Yadav in the playing XI for the fourth Test of the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy 2025 at Old Trafford, Manchester. Harbhajan believes Kuldeep can be the mystery bowler for Shubman Gill's side, providing crucial breakthroughs. 'I had said before the Lord's Test and also for the Birmingham Test that Kuldeep should play. Because the kind of free flowing batting these Englishmen do, it is not that easy to him. If such a spinner spins it both sides, then he can become a mystery bowler and take wickets at crucial times," Harbhajan Singh was quoted as saying to Sports Tak. 'In Test cricket, it is not just that they are waiting for the new ball. Let a few overs be bowled. If nothing much is happening, then Kuldeep Yadav can take wickets," he added. Which Player Can Be Dropped For 4th Test? Asked about which player would make way for Kuldeep in the playing XI, Harbhajan named pace-bowling all-rounder Nitish Kumar Reddy. He also expressed that young top-order batsman Sai Sudharsan was unfairly dropped after his Test debut at Edgbaston. 'If it was my team, I would drop Nitish and bring Kuldeep directly in the team. Whereas if there was a change in the top order, I would back Sai Sudarshan a little more. I would not have sidelined him after the first match. I think he is very capable, he is a very good player," Harbhajan said. Reddy's performance in the Test series so far has been mixed. He scored two single-digit figures in the Edgbaston Test and remained wicketless. In the Lord's Test, he provided two crucial breakthroughs in his first over, took a wicket in the second innings but was unimpressive with the bat, scoring 30 in the first innings and 13 in the run chase. As for the venueof the fourth Test, it is at Manchester, where India is yet to win a Test match and are playing at the venue after a gap of 11 years. Additionally, Indian bowlers have not managed to take all 20 wickets in a single Test at Old Trafford. view comments First Published: Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. India Vs Pakistan Champions, WCL: Squads, Streaming, Timings And All You Need To Know

Here's all you need to know about India and Pakistan's first competitive cricket clash in the World Championship of Legends after the Pahalgam attack. The India vs Pakistan clash in the 2025 World Championship of Legends (WCL) is more than just a game — it's a microcosm of the two countries, a powerful reminder of how sport can offer hope and healing, even in tense times, but not by being completely separate from the political landscape. This high-octane match marks the first India-Pakistan cricket encounter since the bloody conflict of May 2025, which ended with a ceasefire on May 10. The standoff still casts a shadow over diplomatic ties, but on the field at Edgbaston on July 20, cricket is being used to write a different story. India, led by Yuvraj Singh, features players who often lived in the shadows of the greats. Suresh Raina, Ambati Rayudu, Stuart Binny, and others get a rare chance to be in the spotlight again, without the pressures of selection or national expectations. For Yuvraj, who was never given a long run as skipper during his playing days, this captaincy is a redemption arc in itself. On the other side, Pakistan, captained by Mohammad Hafeez, brings together a team of familiar names like Shahid Afridi, Shoaib Malik, Umar Akmal, and Sharjeel Khan. Many of them have faced controversies or been pushed to the sidelines over the years, but the WCL gives them a clean slate—an opportunity to remind the world of their talent, not their troubles. Given the timing, this game carries emotional weight. And reports are circulating that some Indian players are pulling out of the match, which they would be justified in doing and praised for. It remains to be seen if this clash can strip the rivalry of its heavy political baggage and bring back the joy of watching India and Pakistan face off — purely as sport.
