Insider gives update on rumored Lakers-Jazz trade talks

USA Today21-06-2025
According to multiple reports, the Los Angeles Lakers have already started trade discussions lately, even though the NBA Finals haven't ended yet. One beat reporter for the Utah Jazz said they have had discussions with the Jazz about both center Walker Kessler and forward John Collins.
While Kessler could be the ideal player to plug L.A.'s massive hole at the 5 spot, Collins could be a questionable fit. While he can play the 3 and the 5 positions, he's primarily a power forward. L.A. already has LeBron James, whose primary position these days is power forward, as well as Rui Hachimura, Dorian Finney-Smith and Jarred Vanderbilt to play at that spot.
According to Anthony Irwin of ClutchPoints, the Lakers have offered Hachimura to Utah for Collins. He also reported that many in the organization like the idea of having Collins on the roster.
Via ClutchPoints:
"Sources close to the Los Angeles Lakers say that internally, they have long been fans of John Collins, who has the ability to stretch the floor both as a deep threat or someone who can finish well above the rim," Irwin wrote. "Many within the Lakers organization believe Collins would be an especially great fit alongside Luka Doncic. Since their season ended, they've held a few conversations with the Utah Jazz to try to land the 27-year-old big man, with Rui Hachimura often the centerpiece of the deal."
The writer also noted that there is a possibility L.A. lands both Collins and Kessler.
"The Lakers have also remained interested in Walker Kessler and will likely remain as such until the end of time, so another possibility some around the league are wondering about is if a bigger deal involving Collins and Kessler could be in the works. Issue there is the Lakers' lack of draft capital, as sources have indicated the price for Kessler is still quite high."
Additionally, Irwin wrote that the decision of whether to swap Hachimura for Collins or keep Hachimura isn't a simple one for the Lakers' front office.
"A Collins-Hachimura swap would feel like a bit of a side-step for both Utah and L.A. as the players are so similar. They're both big wings who primarily guard power forwards and space the floor. Hachimura is a little smaller and thus can move his feet better on the perimeter, but Collins' size helps him rebound more consistently. Collins' abilities as a vertical threat have made him a little more popular to some in the Lakers organization.
"This isn't to say Hachimura doesn't have his share of favorable voices in the Lakers offices. He has improved each season he's been in the organization. He was one of the few players who truly competed in that fifth and final game against the Minnesota Timberwolves. He's willingly played out of position at times and done so without complaint. The Lakers truly do value what he brings to the table. Those who prefer Collins do so because of the improved fit."
Collins, who is 6-foot-9 and 226 pounds, averaged 19.0 points, 8.2 rebounds and 1.0 blocks a game while shooting 52.7% from the field and 39.9% from the field this season. He has a $26.6 million player option for the 2025-26 season.

"You can't have everything for too long" - Kareem talks about LeBron overtaking him as the NBA's all-time scoring leader

"You can't have everything for too long" - Kareem talks about LeBron overtaking him as the NBA's all-time scoring leader originally appeared on Basketball Network. Los Angeles Lakers legend Kareem Abdul-Jabbar broke Wilt Chamberlain's all-time scoring record on April 5, 1984, and added to it before retiring in 1989. Abdul-Jabbar was the golden standard for 38 years until LeBron James shattered his mark in 2023. During his recent appearance on "The Jennifer Hudson Show," the all-time great fondly known as The Captain talked about surrendering one of the NBA's most iconic records to the current Lakers superstar. "LeBron has earned it," said Abdul-Jabbar. "He's worked hard for 20 years. I mean, more power to him. I didn't really play to deal with records. I wanted to lead my team to the championship. And I was fortunate enough to be on the winning team six times, and I was MVP twice. I'm satisfied with that." Kareem was just too good, too dominant Aside from six NBA championships, Abdul-Jabbar also led Power Memorial Academy to three straight New York City Catholic League titles and UCLA to three consecutive NCAA men's basketball championships, making him one of the sport's ultimate winners. Because he was the best player on his team, KAJ also took home many individual accolades and was almost always the top scorer. The same thing happened when he was in the NBA. Kareem was the NBA's scoring champion during his second and third years in the league, when he also won his first two MVP awards. Abdul-Jabbar averaged over 26 points per game in each of his first eight NBA seasons and was a 20-point scorer in his first 17 years. So it wasn't because Cap wanted to break Wilt's record; he was just so good, unstoppable, and durable that he was able to break it. "You can't have everything for too long. Records were made to be broken, and more power to LeBron. I hope he enjoys it, does all that he wants to do with during his career and after his career. He's had an incredible career. He does things, incredible things, off the court and on the court. Off the court, he sent a whole school district to college. And then on the court, he's crushed everybody for 20 years now. So he deserves it and I hope he enjoys it," he has pushed the record to 42,184 points In Kareem's case, he played five more years after breaking Wilt's record and padded it from 31,420 to 38,387 when he retired. Meanwhile, since breaking KAJ's record, LBJ has gone from 38,388 to 42,184. And although he is 40 years old, going 41, James is coming off a ridiculous Year 22 season where he averaged 24.4 points per game and made the All-NBA second team. Unless he suddenly suffers a steep decline this year, King James could push the record even farther to a number where no one might ever break it. Last year, Bron became the first player to score 40,000 career points. In March, the Purple & Gold superstar also became the first player to score 50,000 points combined in the regular season and playoffs. However, more than those, the LeBron number that stands out more to Kareem is 1,300. That's the number of students that James' "I Promise School" has served since its inception in 2018. In 2020, all 193 students in its inaugural batch were awarded four years of free college tuition to attend Kent State University, plus one year of board and lodging fully paid for. Last year, Anthony Claytor became the first of those students to finish school and story was originally reported by Basketball Network on Aug 3, 2025, where it first appeared.

Former Sixers star Jimmy Butler ranked No. 20 small forward in history

The Jimmy Butler experience in Philadelphia was a fleeting one for the 76ers and their fans. The Sixes acquired Butler from the Minnesota Timberwolves early in the 2018-19 season and he provided some terrific moments before leaving for the Miami Heat in free agency. Butler averaged 18.2 points, 5.3 rebounds, and 4.0 assists in 55 games for the Sixers before leaving for Miami and guiding the Heat to three trips to the Eastern Conference finals and two NBA finals appearances. He is now with the Golden State Warriors after things turned sour in Miami. HoopsHype ranked the top 20 small forwards in the history of the league and Butler comes in ranked No. 20 on that list: One of the best two-way swingmen of his generation, Houston native Jimmy Butler led two undermanned Heat teams to the NBA Finals and is making a run at our HoopsHype79 ranking with his play over recent years. Butler, despite lacking much of a three-point shot, is an analytics darling and a highly efficient player not only for his defensive impact but also because he's been so good at drawing fouls and sinking free throws at a high rate. It also helps that Butler is so adept at scoring out of the midrange, possessing an old-school flair in this three-point-crazed era of the sport. Butler's time with the Sixers was short, but the future Hall of Famer did a lot of good things in Philadelphia and should be remembered fondly by fans. Things just didn't work out between the two sides and that happens at times.

3 Bold Predictions For Luka Doncic's First Full Season With The Lakers

3 Bold Predictions For Luka Doncic's First Full Season With The Lakers originally appeared on Fadeaway World. Luka Doncic has officially entered the next chapter of his career, and it's painted in purple and gold. After a midseason blockbuster trade brought the 5x All-Star to Los Angeles, the basketball world is watching to see what kind of impact he can make with the Lakers from day one. While his short stint last year gave fans a taste of his potential fit, 2025-26 marks the beginning of his true journey as the franchise cornerstone. From his renewed physical conditioning to a chip on his shoulder after being traded by Dallas, Doncic enters the season with something to prove. The expectations in L.A. are massive, but so is the opportunity. With LeBron James nearing retirement and the Lakers retooling their roster around Doncic's timeline, it's Luka's team now. Here are three bold predictions for what could be the most explosive season of his NBA career. Luka Will Finish Top-2 In MVP Voting Doncic has flirted with MVP-level play for years, but this season sets up perfectly for him to finally dominate the narrative. With LeBron James stepping into a reduced role and a revamped roster built around Doncic's strengths, he'll have the ball in his hands more than ever. That means bigger stats, more clutch moments, and a higher national profile as the Lakers contend in prime time. Last year, Luka averaged 28.2 points, 8.2 rebounds, and 7.7 assists per game, but many believed conditioning and team drama held him back. Now, with a leaner frame, renewed focus, and elite motivation to prove Dallas wrong, expect Luka to make a legitimate push for MVP. The only thing standing in his way might be voter fatigue, or another supernova season from someone like Nikola Jokic or Shai Gilgeous-Alexander. Doncic Will Average A Triple-Double For The First Time Now that Luka is in full command of the Lakers' offense, there's a real possibility he joins the ultra-exclusive triple-double club. While he's always flirted with the numbers (career averages of 28.6 points, 8.6 rebounds, and 8.2 assists per game), he's never put it all together for a full season. That could change in 2025–26. With more shooters around him, improved conditioning, and a system tailored to his strengths, Doncic is in the perfect environment to boost his assist and rebound totals without sacrificing scoring. If he does pull it off, he'd be the first Laker ever to average a triple-double and only the third player in history to do it over a full season multiple times (joining Westbrook and Oscar Robertson). Luka Will Lead Lakers To The Western Conference Finals The Lakers finished third in the West last year, even with chemistry issues and major injuries. With a full offseason to gel, a healthy Doncic, and a defensive anchor like Ayton to protect the rim, the path is there for a deep playoff run. Factor in the veteran presence of Marcus Smart, LeBron, and a coach in JJ Redick who understands modern spacing and tempo, and you've got the recipe for a breakout season. The West is stacked—no question. But teams like Denver and OKC have their own vulnerabilities, and the Clippers and Warriors are aging fast. If the Lakers stay healthy and Doncic stays locked in, don't be surprised if he leads this team past the second round for the first time since 2023. A trip to the Conference Finals would validate the trade and officially mark the dawn of a new Lakers era. Defining Season For Luka Doncic If Luka Doncic truly delivers on these bold predictions, the entire trajectory of the Lakers franchise could shift. After years of inconsistency and playoff heartbreak, Los Angeles finally has a young cornerstone who can carry the torch post-LeBron. The pressure will be immense, and with the right support system around him, this could be the start of a legendary second act to his career. For all the hype that's followed him since his Dallas days, Luka's time in purple and gold might just become the defining chapter of his NBA story was originally reported by Fadeaway World on Jul 31, 2025, where it first appeared.
