Mandals & moortikars' hopes raised as govt favours sea immersion of large idols

Mumbai: The hopes of Ganeshotsav mandals and PoP moortikars were raised of having a resolution for the PoP conundrum in sight as govt submitted its immersion policy in an affidavit in HC on Wednesday stating that large idols of sarvajanik Ganeshotsav mandals can be immersed in the traditional manner in the sea with all necessary environmental precautions in place. Govt said the sanctity of the 125-year-old festival, including idol immersion, will be preserved. The 10-day festival begins on Aug 27. The Lalbaug-Parel belt and Khetwadi install large idols over 20ft; Mumbaicha Maharaja of Khetwadi 11th Lane rises up to 38ft, the tallest in Maharashtra. It is impossible to immerse whole in any artificial tank. Mandal president Hemant Dixit said, "I have seen authorities discussing a PoP ban since 2007. But I was confident our govt would not allow Maharashtra's most important festival to be jeopardised. How will you carve thousands of sarvajanik idols from clay? And how many artificial tanks will you build for immersion? I am happy that after declaring Ganeshotsav as the state festival, govt is defending our concerns before HC. " Swapnil Parab, secretary of Ganesh Gully mandal in Lalbaug, whose idol stands 22ft tall, said, "Since the ban on PoP, our preparation had slowed down. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Dolly Parton, 79, Takes off Her Makeup and Leaves Us Without Words The Noodle Box Undo Now that the hurdles are being removed, we are excited to celebrate." Naresh Dahibawkar, president of Brihanmumbai Sarvajanik Ganeshotsav Samanvay Samiti, whose suggestions helped govt determine its stance, said, "I am happy that our fears were heeded and a solution is near. Ganpati visarjan is also celebrated in a grand manner with tall idols being led to Girgaum Chowpatty and Dadar. The court's approval will pave the way for this tradition to continue." Moortikars are anxious for visarjan nod to be finalised since business hinges on it. "We are keenly awaiting the decision," said moortikar Viful Jadhav of Ganesh Arts, Goregaon. PoP moortikar Ravindra Vispute echoed his views. "Due to the initial ban, our workshop opened late and orders were few," he said.

Fans seek heritage status for Uttam Kumar's Shilpi Sansad address

1 2 3 4 Kolkata: On Lenin Sarani stands 'Shilpi Sansad', an organisation founded by Uttam Kumar in 1968 to support needy workers of Tollywood. At its gate, hangs a KMC board, cautioning people that it's a 'dangerous building'. Uttam fans have long been demanding a heritage status for the house, which was once a gathering place for the Tollywood's elite. On the 45th death anniversary of the matinee idol on July 24, Shilpi Sansad officials reiterated the heritage tag demand as well as a 10-day retrospective of Uttam Kumar films at Nandan. On entering 81, Lenin Sarani, a red staircase, with green walls by the side, leads to the first floor that houses a room of a man, who arrived in the city from the Sunderbans to study homeopathy the very year Uttam Kumar died. "I didn't see him at Shilpi Sansad but have heard countless stories of his visits here," said Sushanta Mondal, who keeps the keys for the office before the members arrive in the evening. "Though the building looks derelict from outside, it gives a different vibe inside," Bagchi said. Back in the '70s, it was a familiar address. "When political differences led to Uttam leaving Obhinetro Sangho and forming Shilpi Sansad, the idea was to continue its work in a more organised manner. A section of the industry believed they had one collective to seek help in bad times," said Sayandeb Chowdhury, who teaches at Krea University. He wrote a book on Uttam Kumar. The organisation is also a symbol of how a star could use his charm and power to help the industry's foot soldiers. "It was here that Mahanayak formalised plans to make his stage debut to raise funds for Shilpi Sansad. His first play was 'Alibaba'. Here we had meetings of our 25-member working committee. We firmed up plans for fundraisers," Bagchi added. "Uttam headlined all the fundraisers, knowing people would turn up because of him. But the money raised was for the industry and not for his personal purpose. This building deserves a heritage tag," Chowdhury added.
