Hakim storms to superb win in Aragon

Hakim Danish won his first race of the season in Race 2 of Round 3 of the Red Bull Rookies Cup in Aragon, Spain.
PETALING JAYA: Hakim Danish Ramli made it a Hari Raya Haji celebration to remember after an incredible comeback effort to win Race 2 of the third round of the Red Bull Rookies Cup at Aragon Circuit in Spain. The 17-year-old ran wide with four laps to go but somehow managed to force his way back to the top three with one lap to go in Race 2 yesterday. Hakim's tenacity paid off as he overtook main rival Brian Uriarte, who was only 01.88s behind, on the last corner of the final lap to claim his first win of the season in 26:52.773s. Another Spanish rider David Gonzalez took third place. Hakim thus completed a wonderful Hari Raya Haji weekend on Spanish soil, having taken second place in Race 1 behind Uriarte on Saturday. Hakim was visibly delighted with what he achieved after what seemed like a hopeless outcome when he fell to seventh place after running wide. "It was my only chance and I somehow pulled it off. Finally I managed to get first place. Today's race was great and quite difficult. The tires wore out quickly but I managed to control it. "I would like to express my immense gratitude to my sponsors, family and all my friends who have always supported me. Happy Eid Al-Adha to all Malaysians," said Hakim. Hakim, who has finished thus far on the podium in all six races of the championship, extends his position as the overall leader with 125 points, having a 30-point advantage over Uriarte in second position. The next round will be held in Mugello, Italy from June 21-22.

Soccer-Newcastle boss Howe confident Isak will stay on amid transfer speculation

Soccer Football - Premier League - Newcastle United v Everton - St James' Park, Newcastle, Britain - May 25, 2025 Newcastle United manager Eddie Howe reacts Action Images via Reuters/Lee Smith/File Photo (Reuters) -Newcastle United manager Eddie Howe said he is confident that striker Alexander Isak will be at the Premier League club at the start of the 2025-26 season, after leaving the Swede out of their 4-0 friendly loss to Celtic due to transfer talk. British media reported earlier this week that Premier League champions Liverpool were interested in signing the 25-year-old Sweden international, who has three years left on his Newcastle contract. Isak bagged 23 Premier League goals last season, only behind Liverpool talisman and Golden Boot winner Mohamed Salah (29). Isak, capped 52 times for his country, joined Newcastle from Spanish side Real Sociedad in 2022 and has since netted 62 times in 109 appearances for the Magpies across all competitions. "It was my decision. He travelled back to Glasgow with us but I decided to send him home due to the speculation around him," Howe told reporters after Saturday's match. "The last thing he wanted is to be sat in the stand watching, that wasn't fair to him. But I'm confident he will be a Newcastle player come the end of the window. "It's difficult for me to give 100% clarity on any player. Alex is happy at Newcastle, he loves the players, the staff, the team. I'm confident he'll be here at the start of the season. "Yes, I've had discussions with him but that's not abnormal. I respect a player's career and how short it is. Alex has been really good, he's trained really well and I realise there'll be noise around him." Newcastle, who qualified for Champions League football after finishing fifth in the Premier League last season, will next be in action against Arsenal in a friendly match in Singapore next Sunday. Pearly-Thinaah lose but earn a cool RM141,200 in Tokyo

KUALA LUMPUR: Pearly Tan-M. Thinaah's bid for a second World Tour title of the season, and what could have been a historic first for Malaysia at the Japan Open ended in heartbreak after they fell to Liu Sheng Shu-Tan Ning once again on Sunday. The world No. 3 Pearly-Thinaah were outplayed 21-15, 21-14 by the Chinese duo in the women's doubles final at the Tokyo Metropolitan Gymnasium. Victory would have seen Pearly-Thinaah become the first Malaysian women's doubles pair to win the Japan Open title. Still, their runners-up finish meant they matched the feat last achieved by Chin Eei Hui-Wong Pei Tty in 2008 — the only other Malaysian pair to reach the final in this category. Sheng Shu-Tan Ning, meanwhile, stood tall to retain their crown, underlining their dominance as world No. 1 and inflicting another defeat on the Malaysians, who also lost to them in last month's Indonesia Open final. For their gallant run in Tokyo, Pearly-Thinaah will take home US$33,250 (RM141,200). The Chinese pair have now won five consecutive encounters against Pearly-Thinaah, extending their head-to-head lead to 9-3. Despite the defeat, Pearly-Thinaah's recent form remains encouraging, having reached three finals in their last six tournaments, including winning the Thailand Open in May. They also made the semi-finals of the Malaysia Masters and quarter-finals of the Singapore Open.
